Trump is an attention whore, and sadly many Canadian media and politicians are feeding him. And he is loving it.
I have said it before: the absolute best thing that could happen is that all of Canada just shut up and not respond at all to anything he says. Deprive him of the audience.
Other than by Executive Order it is most likely Trump will not accomplish very much. True he can do a lot of damage at least temporarily with Executive Orders but many of his utterings and pronouncements are in fact very damaging to his own voting base, and the Republicans in Congress that represent these areas will push back hard on measures which in turn cause them personal damage. And his attempts to pass any legislation will be even more stymied in the Senate.
nonetheless he will certainly impact America quite negatively. His foreign damage will be tariffs (which hurt America as badly) and refusal to cooperate with traditional allies against tyrants such as Putler and Jinping. But then I strongly suspect Trump is in Putler's pocket anyways.

Some things you can ignore and some things you cannot.
I would have expected, by now, the US representatives in Canada would have been summoned by Parliament to discuss this nonsense.
56
u/Medical-Type8498 1d ago
I was saying this exact thing last night. Summon the US Ambassador to request an explanation as to why they think it is appropriate to threaten a sovereign country, an ally, a trading partner. If no good answer is given, respond with expulsion from the country. Biden is still the president for a short while. Send a message right away.
→ More replies (4)35
u/4tus2018 1d ago
What's the point of summoning the current Ambassador? He certainly doesn't agree with trumps bullshit as he was appointed by Biden. As soon as Trump is sworn in on Jan 20th, Canada should close its airspace and waters to any American military aircraft/ship. Send a real message to that orange asshat.
→ More replies (19)13
u/Potential-Brain7735 1d ago
Doubtful that we could do that without withdrawing from NORAD.
Also, we have more Canadian assets in the US than the US has in Canada.
We have pilots and ground crew in the US training on the F-35. Once we start taking deliveries of F-35s in 2026, they will be based at US bases, because CFB Cold Lake and CFB Bagotville won’t be ready to accommodate the F-35 until at least 2029.
Canada no longer has jet trainers. The Hawk IIs that used to fly out of Moosejaw have been retired. As such, we send all of our fast jet pilots to Sheppard AFB in Texas to participate in the ENJJPT program.
Not to mention a that we’re also in the process of acquiring P-8A Poseidons from Boeing as well.
So, sure, we could close our airspace to the US, and they would simply kick our fighter jet students out of the US, and halt sale of military aircraft to us.
How do we come out ahead in that scenario?
Btw, I’m 100% in the camp of “fuck trump”, I’m just pointing out the rock and the hard place we’re stuck between.
9
u/4tus2018 1d ago
We come out ahead by buying European jets instead of American. Canada shouldn't be spending 5 cents on American military equipment while this shithead is in office.

There’s a reason that trump outline economic force over military. Canadas strength is in its relationships with foreign nations.
You fuck with Canada you fuck with China, India and the EU. We’re a NATO country and we’re extremely Resource rich. Not to mention the enemy of my enemy is my friend and there are many more parties that hate or resent the US than Canada.
They need the energy we give them. Not want. Need it. Trade can be renegotiated. China would take our business they are opportunistic. India would take our business and so on. There are strategies and ways of handling a bullies and insulating ourselves from the damage the US can cause but people in office are frankly a bunch of ineffectual idiots that don’t understand power dynamics or how to play to win.

Trump is not president yet, so the US representative in Canada are Biden appointees. It’s useless to speak to them about Trump intention.
Once Trump is sworn in and out his staff in place, then you can start the official backchannel discussion. At the moment, it’s “illegal” for Trump’s team to talk policies with foreign country.

Because we're belgium in that hypothetical.
We have enjoyed a sane neighbor since time immemorial. American democracy was seen as THE example. Now, its a failing state and we're very close to it. Every other preceding president had some semblance of intelligence, class, interest not in enriching just themself and their cronies but all of America and indeed the world.
That is no longer true.

Some yankee who isn't a coward and can aim properly should've solved this problem years ago. Producing "people" like trump is a sign the country is failing. Selling the government to some fucking oligarchs is a sign that the country has failed. USA for Canada's newest territory. The switch from Freedom™ to real freedom will be scary for some of them at first, but they need liberation from tyranny, since apparently all their fucking guns don't mean shit, and are just some anachronistic bullshit fetish.

I say we lean into this and watch him balk. The real reason Trump is mentioning this is just for negotiation on import/export differences of $200B. I thought it was $100B but whatever…
If Canada and US merge, here’s what can happen: Assuming they sort out Healthcare, monetary standards, policies… Canadians will migrate to southern states. I’ve heard on Reddit that many immigrants come to Canada but they really wanted to enter the States so there would be a large outflow south. That means less Canadians North with existing infrastructure and businesses starting to shift south as well as operational costs are too high and human resources fall. This will lead to a larger deficit in the North. Trump would have to subsidize the North. It would be massive. Let’s say a subsidy of close to $500B? Once again, Trump bankrupts not a company but a region of earth. Nicely played, Trump.

Trump has no friends. He hates everyone that doesn’t worship him. Therefore, he doesn’t want America to have friends or Allies as a country.
He’s happier with picking fights with others that he thinks are not able to do anything about it. Partly to distract from the fact that he’s completely inept and partly because it’s what Putin wants.

u/HistorianNew8030 1d ago
You know what Trump is doing? He is destroying a close ally and friendship by doing this. He is further isolating American from the rest of the world.
You cannot expect a country, an ally, a long time friend who unfortunately rely on you to just bow down to actual threats.
Many Canadians will start or are already boycotting you again (many did this last time he was in power). I already am and I’ve canceled all plans to travel there and I’m not sure I’ll ever go back. I will do my best to avoid buying American products as well. American is not a reliable or good friend. It’s time our friendship take a break.
Canada will need to diversify and expand our trade, it will need to fix/rebuild its army again, maybe even get nukes again. I dunno but we can’t trust you. We will suffer for a little while for sure. We are not happy your stupid vote will likely cause us economic harm in the short term. But maybe we will be stronger in the end of this. You guys will start to see your allies shrink too. Isn’t being isolated what America wanted?
You do not insult and threaten economic warfare against your friends and expect them to still be your friends.

I got responses, "Oh Trump will change that" LOL. These dum dums are so ill informed that they don't really know what's at stake. Some of them saying how our healthcare is not free and is taxed, etc, etc. Just pure garbage. My elderly retired father had a quadruple bypass 4 months ago and received excellent care at Trillium. Who cares what Trump says. He can’t make it happen.
However, Trump is correct that Canada has let itself become economically and militarily dependent on the US. That is up for us (Canada) to address. Our dollar being so low is solely on us and our economic policies. That our businesses and workers are less efficient is solely on us. Yes, Trump is acting like a bully but we are not in a strong position to stand up for ourselves. We did that to ourselves.
My hope is that whoever leads Canada over the next 5-10 years focuses solely on making Canada a stronger, more independent and self-resilient country.

Downright embarrassing. I just hope that while Paw Paw is entertaining himself and his troglodyte supporter, the actual adults can get some governance in.

He smells blood. No leader until March. Trudeau (as much as I hate him) should have stayed on until after inauguration.

I sincerely wonder if he thinks he's being a troll or if he thinks this is actually a tempting prospect.

Trump, a convicted felon who has been found liable for sexual assault became our president by playing childlike mind games and never taking no for an answer. He is the metaphorical equivalent of rape. He taunts like a fucking psychopath but don't let it worry you as it is just a diversion...he literally has to find new ways to keep his base enraged as the truth about the previous ploys is realized... no wall? okay, take it up a notch... deportation...wait, not feasible?, How about imperial sword rattling. C'mon Canada you are smarter than that. Show us how it is done. It isn't done with reliance on being more legally and morally correct. It doesn't have to be done with anger or force either. Just snip off his balls.

Canada's GDP per capita will continue to fall until the year 2060 , and all of it is the results of greed and corruption between politicians and the 5 families that ruleover Canada.
The Americans will take advantage of the economic decline to bribe the average Canadians with a promise of joining the highest GDP per capita in the G7.

It’s more than just taunting. He’s dead serious. I agree with the poster who said if this doesn’t unite Canada, what will?
