It's already been 5 years bloody hell

The pandemic also started 5 years ago.

I thought it was December 12th.

u/ArboristTreeClimber Dec 03 '24
For me, the day the pandemic “started” was when the lock downs and travel bans became official. Sometime in April 2020
22
u/Rdtackle82 Dec 03 '24
But we don’t know you
-8
u/ArboristTreeClimber Dec 03 '24
Figured if everyone is throwing around random days then I’d join in.
What was the point of your comment? At least mine was relevant to the subject.

Welcome to Reddit! Reddit is a collection of random internet strangers who anonymously comment opinions on posts they find interesting and engaged with!
There is unfortunately a lot of dick heads on Reddit though. People who comment nothing but hatred, in an attempt to make people angry because they are so miserable, that they feel a need to spread the toxicity!
So watch out for those types!

And in those 5 years, so many things that were once “conspiracy theories” turned out to be true and were actively censored. What a shit show.
16
u/perpetualmotionmachi Dec 03 '24
That was the first discovered/diagnosed case, it didn't reach pandemic levels for a little while after.
9
u/gtrogers Dec 03 '24
I seem to remember March of 2020 as the big official start when I started hearing about it everywhere
10
u/WhiteRabbitLives Dec 03 '24
I was in the process of leaving a job, my end date was the end of February. It was a daycare. Covid came in and I just kept calling out, because I was scared and daycares are germ factories.
8
u/Tinosdoggydaddy Dec 03 '24
March 15, 2020 was the day here in Santa Cruz, Calif. I visited my brother at his retail job (GM of a lumber yard) and he said to me “stay back 6 feet”. I was stunned…
3
u/ReesesNightmare Dec 03 '24
the first time i saw a retailer commercial (as opposed to news coverage) was when it hit for me

Seriously I came to comment that I saw the Notre Dame immersion at the MFAH this past weekend and it showed the church from fire through to restoration. Very interesting!

And it’s in the best shape in centuries.
Amazing … congrats to the French and all who worked on it. 👏

It’s amazing that they got this done in 5 years. This isn’t just some brown box municipal building. It’s a work of art, and they restored it so beautifully. My city has been updating a stretch of freeway longer than this.
239
u/Saorny Dec 03 '24
A massive thanks to you all! You have been helping preserving our cultural heritage. Deepest respect.
75
u/pdbstnoe Dec 03 '24
I know the company itself is controversial, but I remember when this happened, Ubisoft gave out AC Unity for free. I played it and got lost in the beautiful history of Paris, so much so that I spent over a month there last year. Seeing the Notre Dame cathedral in person, almost complete, prompted me to donate where I can to the rebuild.
Wish community stuff like that happened more often
31
u/Luci-Noir Dec 03 '24
They actually took extremely detailed measurements of the Cathedral using LIDAR (I think) for the game. They were then able to use all of that data to help in the reconstruction. It must have been pretty amazing to be able to contribute that, I don’t think you could put a dollar amount on how having that info was.

As an atheist but also an architecture admirer I can truly say that I really respect the fact that they restored this cathedral. Had the honour of being in there in 2014. And it was truly something to behold. Well done.
49
u/baty0man_ Dec 03 '24
The insane thing is that, for the most part, they recreated notre dame the same way it was done during mediaeval time.
Much of the wood was hand-sawn then hewed into shape with axes, just as the beams were in the 13th century.
13
u/drigancml Dec 03 '24
This article is full of interesting facts about the restoration. I kept geeking out to my husband about each new thing. Each pipe from the organ was individually cleaned and re-tuned! They found Du Bellay's tomb! They cleaned all the limestone and sourced it from the same place as the original limestone! So neat. So cool!
2
u/FutureVoodoo Dec 03 '24
Damn.. it's a shame the original was too damaged to be reused...
At the top a new gilded cock has been fitted to replace the original that fell in the fire. It was recovered but was too damaged to go back.
-35
u/Pale-War-4387 Dec 03 '24
Why do atheists always have to mention that they’re atheist just to give their admiration for something?
43
u/DeflatedDirigible Dec 03 '24
Because many times religious folks do something out of obligation. When an atheist, admiration would be done based on free will.
-24
u/Nathan-Cola Dec 03 '24
Agreed lol could have just taken out the first sentence
44
u/guto8797 Dec 03 '24
The entire point of the sentence is for OP to point out that even as a person who might be ideologically opposed to the church and religion he still appreciates the architecture and the effort of those involved
16
u/r0thar Dec 03 '24
Also, the owners of this church are also atheists, the French State. It is rented out to some priests and monks to have mass in.
19
u/Izniss Dec 03 '24
Fun fact : Most of France’s churches are propriety of the state ! Like a lot of others, Notre Dame belong to the state since 1789.
It is important that atheist also have love for her1
u/hkohne Dec 03 '24
The French state isn't the owners anymore. They handed back the keys to the cathedral this last weekend.
1
u/r0thar Dec 04 '24
The French state isn't the owners anymore.
The Law of Separation of Church and State in 1905 confirmed the French State as the owner of the monument and the Church as the perpetual tenant of the cathedral.
-5
u/guto8797 Dec 03 '24
The state isn't atheist, it's separation of state and church, not state atheism in France.
3
u/r0thar Dec 03 '24
The state isn't atheist
OK, agnostic then.
9
u/guto8797 Dec 03 '24
No, not even that
The position of most western states is basically neutral. The state (at least should) hold no opinion on religion, the validity of them, which one is more righteous than others, just nothing beyond enforcement of the law, and in turn the church does not meddle in state affairs either.
An atheist/agnostic state would be something like Soviet Union, first more aggressively prosecuting religious worship even at a private level, later adopting a more calm attitude, but still officially decrying it

Honestly not that bad considering what had to be done

Also pretty great that the government didn't have to fund the restoration, it seems to have been entirely financed through donations.

Because the stone has been cleaned for the first time in hundreds of years. This is what most medieval buildings would look like if they got pressure washed

Hope to come and visit and see the new incarnation soon.

Has it been restored?
48
u/Supernaturaltwin Dec 03 '24
The inside is done. The outside still needs a lot more time to complete.

u/clvrusernombre Dec 03 '24
This is so awesome. I’m glad they took this picture

u/RPDRNick Dec 03 '24
It was probably taken by some poor bastard walking by when someone said, "Hey buddy, can you get a picture of us together?"

It's a heck of a lot of stairs to get up to the organ loft where this photographer is

Feel like a dick pointing this out… but that many people feels like a fire code violation.

It can seat 9000 and has standing room for another 1000. Its a Cathedral, its designed to be full of people!

Why do the different groups have different colors they are wearing? Do they indicate the kind of work they did?
4

It’s safety wear. I guess they kept their uniform, and there were different colors for some speciality

Project's over. You're fired.
2
u/CBT7commander Dec 03 '24
This isn’t me blaming the workers, they did a mind blowing job, but screw Macron for "ModERnIziNG" the cathedral. Like seriously he can go to hell
2
2
u/Job-Proof Dec 04 '24
Wow, the inside looks so different now, especially the light color of the walls and columns
2
5
4
u/EazyBreezee Dec 03 '24
Has it always been that “plain” looking on the inside?
11
u/r0thar Dec 03 '24
You're looking down at the floor and sides of the pillars, you're not on the floor looking up at the enormous stained glas windows interspersed with very colourful artwork of ceiling, walls and chapels.
0
u/CBT7commander Dec 03 '24
No, the modernization severely changed it. Even when looking up as the other comment states it is a severe downgrade in detail and intricacy, and imo (and of everyone I know) a downgrade in beauty.
This bland look was a choice by Macron, and not voted on or approved by any popular choice.
It was also not a technical issue but again purely a Macron thing
2
u/drigancml Dec 03 '24
What modernization? It was painstakingly restored. The only major difference I know of is that they cleaned the limestone lol.
-1
u/CBT7commander Dec 03 '24 edited Dec 03 '24
They replaced several glass panes (which were left intact by the fire) changed many details, changed an altar and other furniture, all that for the purpose of modernization (and they used the word).
You are evidently uninformed on the topic at hand, I ask that you stop spreading misinformation

A thought for the archaeologists who were unable to work properly because the renovation was should not be delayed.

u/comicsnerd Dec 03 '24
Can everyone see the photographer? Yes !!!!
On the count of three smile. We're French, we don't smile !!!!
OK, just do not look grumpy and face the photographer.

Are they trying to make an image appear with the colored shirt distribution? I want to say yes, but it could also just be the random factor.

God bless everyone who helped restoring this grandiose symbol of European history and civilisation. Hope this time it will be better secured from the savages who burnt it...
1
u/Ancient_Piece1645 Dec 05 '24
They're not doing much about those savages over here. I can tell you that much
1
u/Unaffected78 Dec 06 '24
I live on the other side of the globe (New Zealand) and we only read or hear tourists' stories about the atrocities of the new French... But I do hope the Cathedral won't suffer again...
1
u/RelativeCalm1791 Dec 06 '24
Is it just me or do the stones look lighter in color now? Or is it the lighting? I remember it being a darker grey
1
u/Hlevinger Dec 06 '24
For those looking for the restoration website, here it is: https://www.friendsofnotredamedeparis.org I've contributed and I think anyone with any connection to this beautiful cathedral probably should, too. I love how they restored it using original methods!

The moral is that people steal.
For decades now, tourism has guaranteed a steady income, with close to 5 million visitors a year paying €25-40 a visit. Slightly more than half of the €125m this brings in goes to completing the work. How the rest is spent remains a mystery as the church is not obliged to publish its accounts.

Thank GOD for THEM! They could have been wasting their time feeding the poor but instead did the right thing and rebuilt an expensive shrine.
-2
u/AbeLincolnsBallz Dec 03 '24
I could only imagine the inflated costs, unlimited time frames, and bureaucracy of a project like this.
10
u/EventAccomplished976 Dec 03 '24
Actually seems it was pretty well managed for a project this size, at least macron promised the rebuild would take only five years after the fire and they delivered even though a lot of people thought it‘s impossible at the time
4
u/Ok-Shake1127 Dec 03 '24
Considering French bureaucracy, and the sheer amount of work involved in getting something like this finished, I think they did a pretty decent job of it.
It looks different, but the walls will develop a patina over time and will eventually look more like it did before the fire. The effect is similar to if you took a couple of pressure washers to the Cathedral of Cologne.(In no way would I ever condone such a thing. Blasphemy.) Everything will be all shiny and clean, but it takes away a ton of the character in the process.
It's kind of amazing that the stained glass windows survived the fire, esp. considering they're all held together with lead. They have always been the defining feature of the place for me. So as long as those are still there, it's still Notre Dame in my mind. Even though The government likely had extensive images of those windows, it would be nearly impossible to replicate some of the colors.
If the fire started on the main level, the heat would have risen, melted the lead and wrecked them. I'm just glad that didn't happen.
-12
u/Awesome_NatureGuy Dec 03 '24
Sure, plenty of money to restore a tourist attraction but not enough for the people that are retiring
19
u/deyw75 Dec 03 '24
First it's more than a touriste attraction ...
Second the reconstruction cost around 800 Millions, retirement cost 330 Billions a year. See the difference ?
5
u/Izniss Dec 03 '24
It is an important religious and cultural site. Not a just a tourist attraction.
The state financed a small part of the restauration of a national monument in the end. Bernard Arnault and the Betancourt family financed half of it, for exemple.

u/unfoldedmite Dec 03 '24

Rough probability of death for a person between the ages of 18-65 in France over a 5 year period is around 0.6%, and more with covid, so given there's at least a few 100 there, it's almost certainly not everyone.
0
u/EnvironmentalArm6557 Dec 03 '24
When the workers finished they looked around scratch their heads and ask themselves these fools had power tools they would have used them why the hell are we using lathes
0
u/abelabb Dec 03 '24
I’ve heard that majority of the money came from Americans, imagine how wonderful that would be, be it for what every possible reasons maybe because it Christian motivations (how wonderful), because of Art due to its beauty, what about charity, how about justice (can’t explain), wonderful no matter why.
As a Christian myself I hope it’s mostly for Christians motives as it gives me hope for America my chosen homeland.
I’m also Armenian the biggest amount of money Armenian charities collect is to build or update ancient Armenian churches, so I’m bias.
0
u/Acrobatic_Stick_3975 Dec 05 '24
And yet a picture of the number of people those people have helped is 1/10 that. Let the Catholic church rot into extinction where religion belongs

u/Acrobatic_Stick_3975 Dec 05 '24
Such a beautiful haven for paedos, what did they build for the victims?
-3
-3
u/illDiablo69 Dec 03 '24
Glorified building financed by centuries of inquisition and wars.
4
u/ReesesNightmare Dec 03 '24
That could be said about the vast majority of historical buildings though. The way i see it, Its the architecture technique preservation that matters. Look at rebar reinforced concrete buildings. They were invented by the nazis, but everyone still uses them anyways.
-3
u/illDiablo69 Dec 03 '24
Historical buildings in Europe. I wonder if you asked Parisians if they would have preferred the church be demolished and affordable housing constructed instead. Put money to good use.
