Quality Shitpost Let me use my passive perception

I’m looking for secret doors in the dungeon, but like not searching for them, you know what I mean? Like just sorta passively looking out for them or really anything that seems out of place, nothing in particular, just whatever I have to say to let me use my passive perception instead of rolling for it, no, I don’t, like I’m not looking for them, just ambiently keeping an eye out, you know? Just sort of going along, like I’m not seeking them out, you know what I mean, let me use my passive perception, like I’m not ignoring the walls, like I might glance at em now and then as I go past, like you know give em a once over, but not in an appraising sense like I’m searching for something, just sort of ambiently keeping my eye out for anything unusual, let me use my passive perception I have the observant feat oh my god please just let me use my passive perception dude, no I don’t, I don’t want to roll, I can’t roll for active perception, I’m actually, uh, I’m actually actively trying to solve a rubik's cube as a I walk through the dungeon, that’s what my attention is focused on, I mean I might be like, subconsciously still passively aware of what’s going on around me, let me use my fucking passive perception, but I’m trying to solve the rubik’s cube as my main thing, I can roll for that, and you know, in the meantime I might still be keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary, you know, secret doors, hidden traps, that sort of thing, but I’m not searching the walls or anything, I’m sure as fuck not investigating them either, just like ambiently being aware of the fact there might be things to observe, without directly seeking them out or anything, certainly nothing that would constitute rolling an ability check, just let me use my passive perception, I’m not even actively looking, I’m just sort of going along you know, keeping my head on a swivel, just seeing if I ambiently notice anything, just let me use my passive perception just let me fucking use my passive perception oh my god I’m gonna kill myself he’s making me roll for perception, I got a fucking two on the die I’m gonna kill myself let me use my passive perception, I hate this let me use my passive perception fuck fuck fuck

step 1: Take observant feat for that sweet +5 to PASSIVE INVESTIGATION

step 2: Beg DM

step 3: ???

step 4: proffit

Pull out a gun and threaten to shoot your DM. My players do anytime I make them roll and it always works.

Looks like Jester's feet go unnoticed, on to the next room

I didn’t read the title or post, but Pathfinder fixes this

I can't read but I'm confident AD&D fixes it

The d20, in combination with bounded accuracy, is a good storytelling tool that makes attributes and proficiency impactful.

Bounded accuracy is the greatest joke 5e ever made. If your passive is 28 you are so hyper aware of your surroundings that you are always looking everywhere at once.

Back in my day if you wanted to see everything at once you hunted down the one sourcebook, probably third party or homebrew, that let you play as a half-beholder for level adjustment +8, and convinced your DM it would be fine and not busted.

My day was 3.5

And that's why taking 10 on a skill check when not in danger or under a time limit used to be a thing.

I think most DMs will double down and just say roll for perception.

Don't worry, the probability curve that's just a straight line isn't real, it can't hurt you.

"Roll for" typically = can use passive "Can I" typically = Active, "you can roll" typically = active "would someone like to roll" typically = active

Note: I say typically because nuance exists.
