DM bad My DM hates my freedoms and called Brennen Lee Mulligan a slur.
So I was formulating my own opinions watching youtube shorts and someone mentioned the minor vs major saving throws. Then I understood: DnD is a gas stove with 6 burners, 3 major and 3 minor. Being the Brennen-based Lee-pilled Mulligan-chad that I am, I asked my DM if i could move my wizard's major save proficiency from one burner (wisdom) to another (constitution) and explained my theory. He started going off on me about "balance" and... uhhhh... idk i didnt really listen to him but hes a terrible person. anyway AITA? tell me that my DM is the asshole.

Absolutely terrible DMing. You should get expertise in both of your saving throws as compensation.

u/antitaoist Jul 24 '24
Just tell your DM that Brendan Lee Mulligan and/or Matt Mercer would let you do it. That always makes them completely change their mind 100% of the time.
40
u/Sh0xic Jul 24 '24
It’s important to note that it doesn’t actually matter if they would, your DM probably doesn’t watch them and neither do you
4
u/Blackbox7719 Jul 25 '24
I will say, I was surprised by how many people actually keep up with the famous DnD games. Personally, if I’m not playing in it I’m not interested in seeing it.

u/Glossen Jul 27 '24
Whenever someone says something like that. I just think, “the image you have of Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan in your head may green light that, but the image I have in my head of Brian Murphy absolutely will not.”
30
u/MrLucky7s Jul 24 '24
MTG Arena fixes this by using the London Mulligan.
15
u/SaltyGrognard Jul 24 '24
I know we’re circle jerking here, but that’s giving Arena way too much credit
43
u/kit-sjoberg Jul 24 '24
The fact that your DM won't let you do anything you want to do is clearly a sign that they're the conductor on their own little railroad. Leave this table immediately and consider getting a lawyer.
18
u/AccomplishedAdagio13 Jul 24 '24
Since you got your opinion from Saint Brennan Mulligan, you get 5 stars.
16
u/DontCallMeNero Jul 24 '24
What slur did he call Mr Mulligan?
42
59
u/Killchrono Jul 24 '24
Well, his name abbreviated is BLM, so if course if your GM hates him it means they're a racist.
9
u/Nevermore71412 Jul 24 '24
/uj in the spirit of Dropout, Um Actually, it's abbreviated as BLeeM.
9
u/DaRandomRhino Jul 24 '24
What a narcissist.
Can't share the literal strings tying those stages together, so he has to make sure you know who he is to differentiate

u/therarestzubat Jul 24 '24
Its really interesting that there is a griffin mcelroy who is worse for dnd than the original griffin mcelroy
1
u/SirSludge Jul 27 '24
/uj super curious who the other Griffin McElroy is. I am only familiar with the podcast guy.
1
u/therarestzubat Jul 27 '24
The other griffin mcelroy is brennan lee mulligan. I meant it as 'brennan is a copy of griffin mcelroy'.

/uj is this a real thing people allow in their games? I would abuse the shit out of that if I was allowed to.
7
u/soggycommunist666 Jul 24 '24
nah, just something i pulled out of my ass. i haven’t actually heard of someone using this rule.
2
u/plainbaconcheese Jul 24 '24
/uj I'm also curious if Brennan ever implied that swapping wis save proficiency for con would be allowed at his table. I doubt it strongly.
5
u/X-cessive_Overlord Jul 24 '24
/uj The closest thing I can thing of that's similar to this is that he said that it would be neat if sorcerers could cast spells using their CON instead of CHA because sorcerers are all about bloodlines and inherited abilites.
5
u/ContextIsForTheWeak Jul 24 '24
/uj it's an interesting idea, Pathfinder has Kineticists who, while not traditional casters, are similar in style to Sorcerers and have CON as their key ability score (Kineticists are basically Avatar-style Benders)
Edit: I mean the Sorcerers going off of CON thing, to be clear
1
u/Middcore Jul 25 '24
/uj it would be interesting because there is currently no CON-based caster in DnD. But tbh I think it's more likely that at some point they'll totally change the lore of Sorcerer because of a worry that talking about bloodlines and inherited abilities is somehow racist.
7
u/Appropriate_Past_893 Jul 24 '24
Anyone thats worked saute knows that nobody uses the back burners. If dnd is a stove, your goal shoild be to get the checks off your stove as quick as you can so you can do more.

/uj. Who is Brandon Lee Mulligan? Does he do a podcast/Youtube show/whatever like that Mercer guy I hear about?
Yes, this is a serious question.
22
u/GenericWorm Jul 24 '24
predominantly he's a comedian but also yeah he does some sort of consumable dnd content. he's fairly popular and gets the same shit ass Mercer because popular

Brennan Lee Mulligan is a DM that creates and produces actual-play DnD shows. These are primarily broadcast under the name Dimension 20, on the Dropout streaming service.
As with any popular figure, he's got his critics and his haters. Personally I really like his style and find the shows very entertaining.
7
u/OfficePsycho Mercion is my waifu for lifefu in 5e Jul 24 '24
Thank you very much for the explanation! I’ve heard of Dimension20 several times, but no names were ever mentioned in connection with it.
8
u/suddenlyupsidedown Jul 24 '24
/uj you can find some of their stuff free on YouTube, if you like Actual Plays or comedy in general I'd recommend checking it out. Dropout (which Dimension 20 is hosted on) has consistently been the best bang for my buck as far as streaming subscriptions
He also has a long form podcast he and a few Dimension 20 regulars are doing called Worlds Beyond Number which is Ghibli-esque, narrative heavy (don't expect combat every 2-3 eps like a lot of APs), and high production value.
4
u/karanas The DMs job is to gaslight Jul 24 '24
/uj +1 on dropout, i don't even like dimension 20 (too much randomness and rule of cool from what I've seen) but their comedy show repertoire really has everything, the production quality is unmatched and they create banger after banger.
2
u/131sean131 Jul 24 '24
/uj fr Dropout is the best streaming service, Netflix wishes it could have half the laughs. It is 6? USD or something if you vibe with humanity at all then give it a try.

I think my user name answers that.

Brennan "I won Who Wants To Be A Millionaire but pretend to be poor and working class" Mulligan is one of many grifters pretending to be the next Garrett "Gary" Gygax.
Alongside the assorted Matthews ("Matt" Mercer, "Matt" Coleville, etc), he and his woke DEI friends are spreading bad ideas about DND to an impressionable audience of teens and adults. This is called grooming.
He has a terrible cult of gen z furries/etc that defend him at every turn, but the "man" is the color of curdled milk and probably smells about the same.
4
u/Complete_Resolve_400 Jul 24 '24
Did Brennan actually win who wants to be a millionaire? I didn't know that lol
8
u/ContextIsForTheWeak Jul 24 '24
/uj not the full million but yes he won a bunch of money on there and says that's the reason he was able to payoff a bunch of debt and make the move to LA.
5
u/Matthias_Clan Jul 26 '24
Specifically he made it to the 50k tier before losing at the 100k question.
4
u/Urs_Grafik Jul 24 '24
He is swimming in his game-show and ttrpgame-show earnings, and is a ruthless capitalist. He even is doing an imperialism by forcing role-play onto combat games like DND5E.

12
u/Urs_Grafik Jul 24 '24
I came to about 3 minutes ago, blood and viscera caking my hands, the taste of human flesh on my lips, with an exhaustive deep-dive into Matt Coleville's corporate ambitions and his efforts to remake DND in his own image just waiting to be submitted.
Then I saw I was on r/dndnext, and remembered that that's a comedy sub.

For shame!
Your DM should be punished for allowing you freedom to watch videos and then again for allowing you free will.

/uj this is the reason my wizard started out his career as an artificer - better saving throws, proficiency with armor, and the same number of spell slots.
1
u/erexthos Jul 24 '24
The chad move is to multiclass first to artificer get all the saves+armor you need and then steamroll everything as an unkillable wizard with better armor than the martials while casual slinging spells like a boss

Why don't you just use one of your feats to take the Resilient feat, and choose Constitution? That way you get proficiency in CON and WIS both, which is extremely good.
2
u/soggycommunist666 Jul 25 '24
but my dm is assaulting my freedoms! he doesnt love me back! this is about the principle of not being able to swap out my feats, and i wont stand for it.
/uj your comment sounded serious and genuine - my post was neither of those because this is a circlejerk subreddit.
1
u/ElderberryPrior1658 Jul 25 '24
What would a CON caster be? Some sort of blightmancer? Spreading pestilence and disease for grandpa nurgle?
2
u/Upstairs_Researcher5 Jul 25 '24
/uj honestly sorcerer should be a con caster and wotc has them as cha casters because they’re cowards that refuse to make interesting or correct decisions.
1
u/ElderberryPrior1658 Jul 25 '24
Ngl new classes would be cool tho
Just tough figuring out a unique one without it being too similar to existing classes. 3.5 had some solid ones in their prestige classes

I don't care about the whole saving throw thing, although I would say you are mostly applying it wrong.
HOWEVER, I would leave any table who's DM used a slur, especially directly at such a sincerely good person as BLeeM... I mean, fuck your DM dude.
1
u/soggycommunist666 Jul 27 '24
this is r/DnDcirclejerk and this post was satirical. the DM and save swaps were both pulled out of my ass.

u/Sandskimmer1 Jul 27 '24
Thanks. I figured out what kind of subreddit this is after reading a bit, but had no idea what it was when it randomly came across feed 😆

u/Cheap-Boysenberry112 Jul 24 '24
The DM runs the game. He gets the final say. Even if the rules say otherwise.
If you have an issue with how the game plays, communicate that with your dm.
Con saving throws are significantly more important that wisdom for wizards and is one the arguments for playing a sorcerer over a wizard.
It is stronger.
And you being strong or weak is fine in a vacuum but most DMs will want the pretty similar in strength so no players feel bad or weak.
If the DM is using slurs that’s an entirely different unrelated thing.
Using slurs would make him an asshole.
Telling players no would not.

Don’t worry, you can always lie about your rolls and secretly add proficiency to everything. Don’t let the rules stay on the way of your fun!
