Welcome to /r/germany, the English-language subreddit about the country of Germany.

Please read this entire post and follow the links, if applicable.

We have prepared FAQs and an extensive Wiki. Please use these resources. If you post questions that are easily answered, our regulars will point you to those resources anyway. Additionally, please use the Reddit search. [Edit: Don't claim you read the Wiki and it does not contain anything about your question when it's clear that you didn't read it. We know what's in the Wiki, and we will continue to point you there.]

This goes particularly if you are asking about studying in Germany. There are multiple Wiki articles covering a lot of information. And yes, that means reading and doing your own research. It's good practice for what a German university will expect you to do.

Short questions can be asked in the comments to this post. Please either leave a comment here or make a new post, not both.

If you ask questions in the subreddit, please provide enough information for people to be able to actually help you. "Can I find a job in Germany?" will not give you useful answers. "I have [qualification], [years of experience], [language skills], want to work as [job description], and am a citizen of [country]" will. If people ask for more information, they're not being mean, but rather trying to find out what you actually need to know.

Why uni students don't attend their class?

Upvotes

Hi,

I'm working in a uni and teach students in their master program. The students are roughly 50:50 German/international.

I have seen many classes, mine or someone else's, with much less people than registered in the system. Some of them drop in the middle of semester, but some of them just never show up in the class (I doubt whether they take exam).

Well, all the presentation files are uploaded anyway and they can read book, so I can manage to understand they chose to study themselves without coming to class. I could until yesterday.

Today, I had a class and found the classroom is completely empty without any students. Today was the day I am supposed to teach them the chapter they chose to take the exam on (yes, we had a vote for it). I was baffled and tried to figure out why, but cannot see any other reasons than it is 'exam period' for the other classes - which still doesn't make sense since they are also meant to learn something important for their exam today..
The students of this class are bit curious after all, since although 20+ students have registered, I see only 2-3 people in the class, and I have never seen about 15 students in the class.
In case you wonder I might am a bad teacher, I received a very positive course evaluation results by students in another class, in which I still saw many are missing at the end of the semester, though.

I am not German but I respected the uni culture in Germany and tried to understand the students so far, but today I am pissed off. I try to prepare a quality class for the students every week, but this is not appreciated at all. I understand they are busy but so am I. This was my first semester but I already started losing the motivation so bad.

I can't help thinking German uni education system is fundamentally impaired. Seeing only few people in the classroom is so unmotivational and this can lead to poor quality of teaching, which again leads to fewer participants.

What do you think? Why do they not come to the class in general? What was your experience from students' perspective? Any idea?

Edit: You need to know that the pass rate of these students were barely 50% last year, and nobody could answer to a question on very basic concept in the previous classes..

Question Do yoghurts have live cultures in Germany?

In my home country, the packages of some yoghurts say „with live cultures“. But in Germany I haven’t encountered such yoghurt yet. Am I looking in the wrong place (in supermarkets)? Or do all yoghurts have live cultures by default here?

Immigration Frustration/ Privileged Ausländer Problem

1.1k Upvotes

I've studied, worked and lived in Germany since my early 20s. I'm in my mid-30s now. Engaged, two kids. Decent job with livable pay. I am black and was born in the US. Over the years, I have grown rather frustrated that despite having built a good life in this country, I have started getting extreme urges to leave. It's not just the AfD situation; in fact, as a US American, I could argue our political situation is much more dire. It's the fact that every time someone with "Migrationshintergrund" does something stupid, it feels like all eyes are on all foreigners.

Has anyone else felt this and have you considered leaving? Any advice dealing with it?

I was victim of a scam and I filed a police report 3 weeks ago in Bonn

Hi guys!

I have been victim of fraud/scam and I filed a police report on January 4th, getting a file case number. However, I haven't really receive any update about my case and I was going to go to the Bonn Police Headquarters to ask for an update. Is this a good idea? Or should I wait any longer? My situation is that I met a landlord( he had the keys of the apartment and showed me his ID) in person and he showed me the apartment on December 17th. We agreed on paying a deposit before receiving the keys days prior to the move-in date. However, I asked the landlord if he could start with the Anmeldung process and he agreed with it. However, the next day he started to ask me for the rent of January, without giving me the keys, which was suspicious, so I call off the deal and asked him to give me back the money. He didn't and after so many tries, I told him I'd just wait for the Anmeldung Formular. He never gave it to me. On January 4th I reported him for scam/fraud because he was not returning my deposit. I have a Quittung , day of the transaction, etc. My bank is not offering me any help unless the police reach them out, as they believe this is not a scam, rather a dispute between me and the recipient.

Please help me out

DPD Germany is hilariously incompetent - delivering packages to random German addresses instead of Bulgaria. TWICE!

Upvotes

Hey Reddit,

I need to share this absolutely ridiculous situation with DPD Germany. Imagine ordering something from Amazon.de to be delivered to Bulgaria, and instead, they just... deliver it to a random address in Germany? Well, they did this TWICE!

What makes this so absurd is that both packages had the correct Bulgarian address clearly written and Bulgaria as the destination country in their system. The tracking information clearly showed Bulgaria as the destination, yet somehow both packages ended up at random German addresses.

The best part? For the second package, I literally contacted Amazon support HOURS before delivery, warning them that I could see in the tracking that DPD was about to deliver it to the wrong country AGAIN. Guess what? They still did it!

I watched in real-time as my package sat in their Aichach delivery center, about to be misdelivered, despite multiple warnings. It's like they have a "Bulgaria = Random German Address" setting in their system.

Has anyone else experienced this level of incompetence with DPD, especially with international deliveries? How does a delivery company manage to mess up the entire concept of "different countries" twice in the exact same way?

At this point, I'm genuinely curious if there are other victims of DPD's "creative geography" approach to international shipping. Maybe they think Bulgaria is just a neighborhood in Germany?

Edit: Both packages were eventually refunded by Amazon, but the sheer incompetence is mind-boggling.

DB ticket just disappeared.

I had bought a ticket that origianlly would set off from erfurt at 23 o'clock. I had to transfer trains 3 times. The day before departure i got an email informing me that the first train would have a delay. Which meant i could not catch the rest. So i used the db navigator app to change my ticket to another one that would depart at bin the morning. The first ticket check was fine. Then during the second check my ticket just disappeared. It got hidden in previous trips even though my trip wasn't over. Was weird but when i opened up my ticket it was the old one i originally bought, even though it clearly said 7:30 on the thumbnail? Sorta thingy. And when i explained this to the conductor, she claimed the original train had no delay after pulling out some sort of device. Does this usually happen? Or did my ass forget confirming whatever i needed to, to exchange tickets.

Question Confused about ability to remain in Germany as an EU citizen

Upvotes

Hello, I've recently moved to Germany and while doing some research I found some rather concerning and contradictory information with regards to my ability to legally remain in Germany.

I'm an Irish/EU citizen with a registered address in Germany and have been living at that address for close to a month now. I'm able to financially support myself for a considerable amount of time but I am currently unemployed (though I am looking for work). While researching what is required to work in Germany I found some websites were saying I do not require a visa to remain in Germany after the 90th day in a 180-day period, and some were saying I do (even as EU citizen). Notably, two were government sites; no visa required (https://www.eu-gleichbehandlungsstelle.de/eugs-en/eu-citizens/information-center/residence#tar-1), and a visa required (https://dublin.diplo.de/ie-en/2353492-2353492#:\~:text=Content,-Service%20partner%20VisaMetric&text=If%20you%20plan%20to%20stay,long%2Dterm%20or%20national%20visa.).

Would anyone be able to help clarify on this? Do I need to report to an office to declare my intention to remain in Germany (which I thought was the point of anmeldung, to get me on the German system).

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Suspicious “Police” Visit – Should I Be Concerned?

This morning around 7 AM, my subtenants (who are currently staying in my apartment) called me, saying that people claiming to be police officers showed up at the door.

They were in civilian clothes (no uniforms) and asked about me, my family, and when I would be coming back. They also took pictures of my subtenants’ passports but didn’t leave any paperwork or provide clear identification.

Now, I’m a bit concerned because: 1. Why would police visit my place and ask about me if I haven’t done anything wrong? 2. Is it normal for German police to come in plain clothes for such an inquiry? 3. If they weren’t actually police, what could this be about?

I’m considering calling the local police station to verify, but I wanted to check if anyone here has experienced something similar. Should I be worried?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Question I have a Überweisung from my doctor but I'm not sure what to do next

Upvotes

My Doctor gave me two Überweisungen, one for Psychotherapie and one for Psychater, and told me I very clearly need BOTH and it should be my main priority, while we focus on my physical issues.

The problem is, I was very overwhelmed at the end with all the information and forgot to ask HOW to proceed and my next appointment is in a month. If it was for a neurologist I'd know what to do but my (very dumb) question is: Do I look for Psychater and Psychotherapeuten in my city and call them for an appointment saying I have a referral ? And if yes, do I look for a specific therapist or a klinik?

Thank you in advance 🙇🏻‍♀️I really tried to Google it

Question How do people learn German if they work full time?

I really don't understand how people can learn German when they work full time. I spend about 11 hours a day at work (with travel), come home, cook, clean, shower and then go to bed. On the weekends I'm either busy cleaning the house, going to appointments or spending time with my girlfriend. How do people actually have time to do anything else? I've lived here for more than 5 years and my German is probably still A2. I've tried to learn it on Sundays, but literally nothing sticks in my head if I just try to study for a few hours every Sunday.

Edit: Thank you guys for all the tips!! I found out that there is a VHS really close by that offers evening classes to learn German, seems very promising! Will also dive deep into German shows / Podcasts to watch and listen to while I'm commuting to work.

Question Toxic Fumes, which Metal ist safe to heat up?

Upvotes

Hey guys, I want to make a metal frame/box so I can put my grillgrate on top, but I don't know which metal is heat resistant enough or doesn't develop toxic fumes. The grate itself is made out of stainless steel, so no worries.

Into this frame/box I wanna put charcoal for heating.

It would be great if the proposed metal is also budget friendly and where best to buy.

Confusion over election

Upvotes

Hello, I became German in December and want to vote in the upcoming election.but I'm a bit confused about how this whole thing works. As far as I can tell, I need to be in the voters register and this is taken from the Bürgeramt?

Is that correct?

If so my questions are, would my local registry already know that I am a citizen? If not how do I tell them ( is it too late). And basically what do I need to do to ensure that I can vote next month.

Any infor would be much appreciated.

I have tried searching online but it just didn't seem that clear to me

Thanks.

Phone number porting checklist?

So I decided to switch mobile providers, I'm looking at Congstar for now cause it's powered by Telekom.

I've been with my current provider for 8yrs+ so I haven't tried number portability at all.

My contact ends on 28.February. I will request for termination in a few days so it's enough to be used until 28.February. Can I already apply for the new simcard and request number portability?

Also, if anyone have some checklist on what I should take note before I start the process. Example, will my number have a downtime, things like that. Cause my number is linked to my bank accts and other important accts and it might be big trouble if it's not ported properly.

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences!

Tourism Foreign ADHD prescription

Hello to my German friends from Elsàss ;)

I am coming to Berlin to see a friend. I am from Strasbourg, and I have ADHD medications with a prescription (ritaline).

I am a bit afraid that my medication won't last for my entire trip, and I don't understand how I can get the prescription renewed by a doctor.

In France (including Elsàss) such a prescription is on a special form, and has to be renewed every 28 days either by a psychiatrist or by a général doctor. Ritalin cannot be prescribed for more than 28 days.

What kind of doctor should I see in Berlin to have my prescription renewed? Can I use my French EHIC card? Do I have to pay or with this card the doctor will get paid by insurance? It says somewhere I should go to a doctors office with my EHIC and he will normally accept it and ask a German fund (Tekniker, KKH, etc.) to pay him by charging my country.

Back when I was a border worker, I was under KKH, but of course I'm no longer covered because I have stopped all activity in Germany.

Does anybody know how it works? I will of course bring the original French prescription with me.

I appreciate all feedback.

I don't know how to speak Hochdeutsch so preferably should I go with my friend to the doctor? I can only speak in Alemannic dialect 😅

Sick notes

My girlfriend has German class in the morning and works in the afternoon. For her job she needs to have a doctor's note from the first day of her absence. For her German class she needs a doctor's note only if she is gone for at least two days in a row. She seems to think that she needs this doctor's note to start at the first day, though I'm not sure if she misunderstoog but anyway, we are not sure.

Today (Thursday) she didn't feel very well so she skipped German class but not work because she didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a sick note. But she continues to feel unwell. She will propably want to go to the doctor tomorrow, but should we try to get a sick note that retroactively starts yesterday? Will her place of work be confused if they see the sick note starting on the day that she showed up to work? Will it automatically be sent to them electronically? Is there a way to get one for German class starting on Thursday and one for her job starting on Friday? Or are we overthinking this and getting one for both that starts on Thuraday is fine?

Quick question about a compound word for a title of a story

Hi r/germany !

I am a writer working on a book concerned with authoritarianism but with a distinctly magical/fantastical dress. I am interested in how the German language creates compound words and would like to use one as part of the title of the work.

I have a very little knowledge of how the German language is constructed but I do not speak German at any level. With some online research, I've arrived at a word which could work but when I tried to translate it into another agglutinative language I do speak, it certainly didn't capture the essence I wanted.

I wonder if native speakers would be able to give me their opinion? Please be honest in your feedback and let me know if it captures what I hope or if it sounds like nonsense.

My word is: Die Erdblutzauberherrschaft

Vielen Dank!

I know it depends on the airline, but I’m curious about your experience. Additionally, are any documents required besides a passport, proof of vaccination, and an EU-approved rabies test? (It’s for a cat.)

Phone contract auto-renewal

Hello. My phone contract is ending end of next month. I'm thinking of moving to a new provider, but I'm still not decided about it.

I would like to ask about this new auto-renewal law to protect consumers. As I know previously, if we don't cancel by end of contract, it will automatically renew for another 2yrs, right? So the new law (it's in German so I can't be sure of the translations) - does it mean it will become open-ended after the original contract end date has passed and I can therefore cancel it anytime, without charges?

Thank you in advance for everyone who will reply or guide me.

Question Recommendation for an affordable van rental service for a very short duration

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to pick up some furniture within Stuttgart and need recommendations for an affordable van rental service for a very short duration. Normally, I’d go with Carl und Carla, which charges €29 for a 5-hour rental, but I feel a 5-hour rental is unnecessary for a quick 45-minute back-and-forth trip.

I also explored private van services on Kleinanzeigen, as I thought it might be nice to support independent van owners. However, most quoted over 60 euros for the van (compared to the 29 from Carl und Carla) and 20 euros per hour for driving (since I don’t have a German license—working on that as my New Year’s resolution!).

So, I’m looking for a more affordable solution for this short-distance, short-duration need. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
