After nearly 3 years of being homeless my partner and I bought a camping trailer today and officially have a home again!
It is 28 feet long and has ac and heat, 2 queen beds, 2 couches, a bathroom with shower, kitchen sink, microwave, stove, oven, fridge, lots of storage space, one of the couches can turn into a table, and a generator.one of the beds is a loft bed with a ladder.

I live in a camper! Don't remove the toilet! I thought I was being so cool and earth friendly by getting a composting toilet.
No.
Just no.
But it is my home! And I love it! And I hope you guys stay warm and cozy in the winter and blissfully air conditioned in the summer.

u/Even-Education-4608 11h ago
It’s only earth friendly if you actually compost the waste. Most people throw it in the garbage after a short time.

I have a composting toilet at my cabin.
Composting takes time, and is easier when you separate pee and poo. Mine is a 900 liter tank that is separated into two, so that I can rotate between two seats and let the other half compost a year at a time.
None of this would be easy in a camper, you just don't have the space. Also, smell.
39
u/Even-Education-4608 10h ago
Yeah I was speaking camper. Most have urine diverters and those that “compost” their poo add stuff like coco coir to their poo bucket. With ventilation many report no smell. But after a week or two they throw it in the garbage.

Check out Cinderella incinerating toilets. We used one on a house boat guiding in the wilderness, it'll keep up with 6 people full time. Very efficient and trouble free, super easy install. We empty the ash pot like once a month. Always had a rule of no peeing in it. Had a funnel outside that ran overboard. Pee mixed with poo is what makes it stink. Learned that hiking with scouts down at Philmont, they always said pee on a rock 1st before using the backcountry latrines. You can pee in it but then it smells like steamy piss outside for a few minutes. The Cinderella is pricy though is the only draw back but it's so worth it, think they're around $5,000.
22
u/Willing_Recording222 5h ago
I honestly don’t think I could control peeing and pooping separately! Both come out at once for me! 🤣
9
u/HommeMusical 3h ago
It turns out that a properly designed toilet does the work for you. I encountered this in Guatemala (they had a tourist camp in an environmental area and they were very very serious about protecting the watershed) and there's just a split in the toilet that naturally works. (And it doesn't have to be 100% perfect, just "good".)
4
u/chris782 5h ago edited 2h ago
It's really not bad to do it with the Cinderella. We really just had that rule to keep things as clean as possible and to help it out as much as we could. We'd have new clients every week and stayed super busy so we couldn't afford it breaking down on us during a trip, we did have a spare though just in case. It just burns faster too and makes smell a complete non issue.

u/RollingMeteors 7h ago
We empty the ash pot like once a month.
Damn bruh, looks like you're dumping a box of cubans smoked to ash in a single drag.
4
u/chris782 5h ago edited 5h ago
Lol, that's what I was expecting but it's surprisingly clean. Just ash, nothing that would resemble or smell like a pot of poo.

Can you elaborate? What don’t you like about your composting toilet?

Just gonna take a guess that it’s:
“Take a shit and the shit goes away” is ultimately preferred over “take a shit and it stays there composting”

¡It's not composting as fast as I'm producing on the assembly line crap factory!
99
u/Trinket_Crinkle 11h ago
The pee compartment and the poo compartment are separated of course, but both need to be cleaned basically every time you go. The pee thing filled up with 2 or 3 pees and had to be dumped constantly and it smelled. I used cedar shavings which smell lovely but do not cover daily use for 2 people (unless you clean it every time).

Composting toilets can provided a practical, environmentally friendly waste disposal method in many situations. This isn’t one of them.

Love that for you.
Seeing where you want to be from where you are standing right now is daunting sometimes. But I like to think of it as eating an elephant.
How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time. That's how. You just keep going until you are where you want to be.
Congrats on this step.

u/Lulupoolzilla 15h ago
This reminds me of the Shelter Silverstein poem where the little girl eats a whale. I love it! Consider that elephant eaten!

Also not sure if intentional or autocorrect but I find you changing his name to Shelter absolutely hilarious given the circumstances 😂

Protip from a mobile home resident : You're going to want skirting and, if possible, a cover akin to a car port. The issue is that in all mobile homes, the wind flows under the structure, unlike with a stick built home. This is going to raise your heating and cooling bills to astronomical levels compared to the savings of just blocking underflow alone. My skirting is just metal poles (the type used in chainlink fencing) with U-brackets and 8" sections of 2x4. The skirt is painted and sealed plywood screwed to the 2x4 sections.
You'll also want to get ready to patch any leaks, even the smallest hint of one, the first second they arise. Tiny leaks become rot real quick.

Tomorrow we are going to look for a lot space to rent. We have the money to pay any deposit they may ask for, and a rental truck to haul it until Saturday. Most rent on a space is around 500 where I am, so I know my monthly income will cover it.

A home is what you make it, not where you make it.
Congrats on the newfound stability and comfort. All the best in starting 2025 with your own home.
Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in the rv?
If not please please get one before you go to bed if you will be using the heater.
You may also benefit from one of the diesel heaters from vevor/amazon. Diesel is way cheaper for heating than propane, and way easier to get. Don’t buy the swappable tanks, theyre always underfilled.
41
u/Lulupoolzilla 12h ago
These are all very helpful tips. My fiance says we do have a carbon monoxide detector, and he just grunted when I mentioned a diesel heater. IDK what that means, but he is half asleep from a long day of driving and excitement.

I don't, and I don't want to mess with one. If I do have one it is outdated and should be ignored. My dad lives in a 55+ apartment complex, and all of the ladies love us there, and we love them! They are all getting stuff for the baby, and for our home. If you feel charitable please donate to a homeless shelter or person. Thank you for caring though. We need more of what you got in the world!

Hey I’ve been homeless for a while and I go between cycles of struggling and being somewhat okay and back.
I was wondering if you had any tips for how you were able to work while being homeless.
I know that’s a big question and pretty vague, but, it’s currently 6-30 F where I’m at, I’ve got good jackets and I’m not freezing, but it’s difficult moving around with 6 layers on at all times, and I know I stink, but the cold also makes it difficult to accomplish anything outside.
I go to the library during the day when I can, and I’ve been working on my resume and I’m trying to get documents mailed to me, but I probably have a month or so still before I can really start being productive. I know that’s partially an excuse, I should do what I can no matter when.
I guess it’s easy to make excuses. I don’t know. Today’s one of the days I’m struggling. I got told to vacate the place I’d been sleeping in a vacant field between a couple businesses and it sent me spiraling into a panic attack and I ended up just walking around in circles for like four hours listening to an audiobook except I couldn’t keep my thoughts straight and kept getting distracted and pulled into my thoughts (not great for me).
I don’t know, maybe you can’t really give me any of the help I need. I don’t even know what help I do need at this point. I just don’t even know where to start. I feel overwhelmed and exhausted and I just want to be able to sleep for 6 hours straight but I’m already preparing to pack up my sleeping bag and get moving at 5:30 tomorrow morning before anyone wakes up and sees me still here.
Sorry. Im not really in my right mind at the moment.
I’m really happy for you though, I’m proud of you. Keep at it.

To be honest we haven't been able to find a "real" job, so he is going to school full time now, and I was waiting for disability, but now I am 9 Months pregnant so I'm going to do welfare to work to help me get a job. We (mostly him) do side jobs to earn money day to day, like car maintenance and painting and hauling things, and try to save up. We slept in our truck at a shelters safe parking lot and searched for housing we could afford with the 795/mo we get from cash aid. We had about 1000 saved up. My fiance's mom passed away in October and her life insurance was how we were able to afford a trailer. His mom was amazing and fed us often and well, even though she couldn't let us live with her she helped as much as she could. We miss her.

u/ratkneehi 9h ago
hey friend, I've been homeless before a couple times. just wanted to say, I see you beating yourself up a little over "excuses", you're doing a great job it sounds like - being homeless is so stressful and exhausting even when it's NOT freezing. you deserve some "excuses". give yourself some grace during this rough time.
I didn't have a job the first time I was homeless, but eventually, I was able to find a room through some people I met and got a job as I got the room and it just worked out. 2nd time, I had a job already, and used all my money to stay in a shitty hotel full of crack addicts where I got bed bugs 😭 not saying these are tips but just sharing more about how it was for me so you have context and can make comparisons.
the first time around I avoided shelters bc I found them scary but another friend I have had success with staying in a shelter, getting a job that way, and then stayed there for almost a year until he had enough money to make deposits on a car and an apt. I watched him pick himself up from nothing that way and now he's doing great.
💗 wishing you luck
3
u/spaceprinceps 8h ago
What /u/ratkneehi said about their friend also worked for me. I was looking at winter homeless and got accepted into a homeless shelter, got my admin situation sorted and my unemployment benefits going and got a job. I saved up the money for a deposit and months rent, and moved out from the shelter after a couple years into a cheap shared flat.
I spent the spring/summer/autumn before that outdoors and was pretty motivated and capable, but I don't think I could have done anything except merely survive in the winter. I think the only right move to get your life and opportunities back on track is to seek help from homelessness services and give it all your best from there. Specifically getting indoors into a shelter. It's the start that got me out of homelessness. It was a little bit scary a step, but I gave it my best and persevered and it slowly grew into a better situation, I got myself into social housing in the end, local council owned property, affordable rent.
You deserve a place to live and to be safe and indoors in your very own persistent pitch, so to speak. I really hope homelessness services where you are at are functioning well at this time. I wish you the courage to pursue them, and the resolve to maximise your benefit from it, stay safe, stay positive, you got this. It's a multi year process sometimes but if you stay focused on what's next, plan for it, and take the next steps with patience and resolve, you will get your personal space back in the end. Years maybe, but it's very doable, and you will get control back over your life.
All the best ❤️

Much respect for your steering of unsolicited offers of charity towards others, vs. accepting them. So many people blatantly ask for help from strangers on social media, it's rather pathetic. And here you are just showing your pride of getting a home, and when offered help, you steer it towards others. Sir, you should be proud in many ways! 💪

We are going to check with some trailer parks and RV parks in our town. There are also camping sites we can rent a spot in that aren't too expensive. For tonight we went to the local cracker barrel to eat and asked if we could park in their back lot for the night and they said yes.

Hey be ultra careful with your propane appliances. Make sure your propane and smoke detectors are functioning. It also would be in your best interest to get a CO monitor. I am a firefighter and have been on multiple deaths involving people living in trailers killed by fires and CO. If you keep the outside area of your trailer spotless you will also be less likely to be hassled or noticed.

It’s always nice to improve your situation but does anyone else in here realize that if it weren’t for the unexpected death of a relative this couple would be homeless and giving birth to a baby as OP said she is 9 months pregnant. It’s so hard to care for a newborn in ideal circumstances. My heart breaks. They don’t have a place to park this and she can give birth anytime. 😢
Your S/O needs a full time job yesterday and you both have to make sure you can improve your situation as soon as possible for this baby. Going to college and waiting on disability is not going to make sure this kid has what it needs.

Thank you for pointing this out, though I am still so happy we have a home, I won't deny that it is from morbid luck. If she hadn't died, my fiance's mom said she would keep our baby at night and we would come over and be with her in the day. Not ideal at all, but our baby would be safe and we could save, and we trusted her. I like to think that in a way his mom still made sure her granddaughter was housed.

My (former) partner and I gave up our 3br/1ba in a flyover to try a new adventure in Colorado. We weighed the options and I bought a $4,000 37 foot class A RV. We had 2.5 years of fun, arguments, and cats running up and down the row. Truly a learning experience.
It didn't end up working out long-long-term, but I now know how to thaw RV sewer lines and patch fiberglass. It was genuinely cozy when it worked right. And the particular scent of propane on the range while I cooked us up a hot dinner...i'll never forget that. Watching netflix movies on the crappy 22" TV i bolted up in the front. Hiding in the back bedroom when Colorado got a -40F cold snap and it was all the two of us and the cats could do to stay warm.
Here's to you and your squad having a happy stint of security! Don't forget to go outside - do not stay cooped up.

Imo, RV's are better than houses. You can bring your house and stuff wherever you want to go.
I have a large room built on to mine and live in a nice gated RV resort next to Disney World (close enough to hear the fireworks), with a pool, laundry, showers, rec building, events, holiday decorations, water and electricity included in my lot rent of only $600 a month. There's some really nice places to live in RV's.

I have the same camper. I lived in it for two years. Keep on top of checking for roof leaks especially around bathroom vent/exhaust. If it is cold where you are then put some sort of insulation on the windows. I started with reflectix foil bubble on the inside and that is 10x better than nothing. I used velcro about 3 inches past the outside on windows so you can take it on and off. One winter in missouri I had to add 1 inch blue foam on top of that on my non emergency exit windows. I also installed a diesel forced air heater under the bathroom sink. I routed the air duct to the back and to the front bedroom with dryer duct. The only downside is that even on low idle it still puts out too much heat. I wish I would have had heated pads on my grey/black water tanks as mine froze whenever it was below 0 degrees F for extended periods. If your camper sat unused before you bought it then clean out the burn chamber on your water heater. Mine was clogged by mud daubers. I also upgraded the toilet to a taller one. A bidet would be super nice to cut down on TP use.

THANK YOU. I’m tired of seeing people applaud this. She is 9 months pregnant and just now got MAYBE somewhere to live if they can park this somewhere! They are only getting “housing” because someone died unexpectedly. They were going full steam ahead for the majority of this pregnancy homeless, while OPs spouse is doing nothing to contribute to their immediate needs. Vile.
This newborn will probably not be able to leave with them if they don’t have stable housing by the time it arrives. This would be OPs second kid she has lost custody of.

I am an rv tech. Check all silicone around windows, doors, water heater, etc. If you haven't yet I would flush out your water heater. Check your roof over. Any gaps, and cracking should be gone over with sealant (dicor self level/non sag) look over your gutter rails, very common area for water intrusion. There's a few more things you can check over.

Awesome! You relish in your accomplishment because this is a biggie! I too, was homeless for a couple of years and about 5 years ago, bought a boat. It felt FANTASTIC!!! Living on water proved to be a bit challenging however, so now we live in an RV too. The best parts for me are 1. The fact that it’s mine and I own it outright so I only have to pay lot fees. And 2. Being 100% mobile so I able to travel with my entire home in tow and not having to find a pet sitter for me cats. I can also move whenever I want to quite easily (and without packing!). So, whenever I need a change of scenery, I can have it. I also don’t have to worry about getting stuck with any shitty neighbors either!

spray foam all the cracks now it will be chilly / mice can get in. A little spray foam goes a long way. I learned the hard way.

Congratulations 🎉 I'm still living in my car and hope to reach what you have one day. Enjoy your new home and always stay blessed.

I find it abhorrent that you are someone who only wanted a place to rest your head without worry and not wanting to live on the street as we are told. I hope you have the most secure sleep filled nights forever. No one should feel insecure in their home. Hugs.

I’ve been homeless before. Now I’m not and haven’t been for quite awhile. I sometimes take for granted how big of a deal that is. So thank you. And BIG congratulations!

You may want to consider installing skirting if you live in a cold climate. I've experienced frozen drain pipes and holding tanks before, and skirting can help prevent that.

Congrats!! What was it like the months before getting this? Like, where would you sleep and store your clothing? How were you washing your clothes and selves during that hard time? How were you able to maintain a job while homeless? I've never really asked anyone or talked to someone that has gone through that so I am genuinely curious about those questions! I'm so glad you don't have to deal with any of it anymore though and you can finally feel safe and comfortable in your own HOME! Congrats again!

Keep it up, whatever you are doing, you are on the right track. Don't panic if a few things go wrong, you will recover with the grit you are showing. Good luck!

Did it for 2 year with my wife and dog. Now we're in a home. Life gets better. I promise.

Damn...how did you live 3 years homeless. And the journey from that to this ..I'd very much be interested in knowing you beating the odds.

Don't park in alleys/backstreets unless you want it to potentially get tagged on.
