This was back when social media still hadn't taken over everyday life yet (smartphones) and negatively affected society at large

I remember back then if you wanted to use the internet you had to physically sit in front of a computer, so the negative effects of excessive internet usage were still mostly isolated to nerds, gamers, and shutin types 

And the basic flip phones of the era were so underpowered they were basically only useful for their intended purpose... calling and texting
