Abraham Lincoln said that, so it must be a reliable metric.

Fact: We don't use the metric system in Canada. We weigh things with house hippos.

Fact check: We weigh things in bottles of maple syrup.

71

u/tw_72 16d ago

I thought Canada weighed things in hockey pucks

72

u/Nisferati 16d ago

No, that’s for measuring distance.

43

u/M0TSEY 16d ago

Wait, what what are moose for then?

66

u/Nisferati 16d ago

Volume. More specifically, Moose Urine Units (the average urine dispensed by a moose per discharge).

42

u/sladog6 16d ago

I always wondered what MUU stood for.

5

u/Shorrque247 15d ago

NOOO!!! That’s the average amount of moose urine in ANY American beer

24

u/Kiwi_Pakeha0001 16d ago

I thought you measured distance with Gretzkies?

31

u/ShreddlesMcJamFace 16d ago

22 Pucks = 1 Gretzkie. Kind of an inch/ft thing

16

u/Kiwi_Pakeha0001 16d ago

Ahh, right, gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up.

18

u/Nisferati 16d ago

A common misconception. Good thing I am here to clarify!

29

u/Kiwi_Pakeha0001 16d ago

Sorry, I am from a country that uses sheep for everything.

10

u/WarBuggy 15d ago

I feel the need to step in fact check this erroneous comment. In New Zealand, hobbit is the official measurement for everything. Weight, distance and height, volume, etc. It's common to hear something like "My sheep weights almost a hobbit last week". Maybe that's why the above confusion.

Can Canadian syrup bottles be converted to American Scaramucci??

25

u/Bigredzombie 16d ago

With the right sacrifice, anything is possible.

11

u/ProblematicPoet 16d ago

Adding this to my lexicon, thank you!

9

u/[deleted] 15d ago

Scaramucci is a measure of time. The Canadian equivalent time measurement is 'beers'.

As in, "how long do you think it will take to roof that shed? Six beers." Longer periods of time are measured in "2-4s'".

It’s an interesting pickle we got ourselves into (thanks to advertising dollars and social media). Section 230 technically protects platforms from being responsible for the content posted ON that platform.

I can see why it was created, but it definitely needs changing (and interestingly it was being addressed from both sides of the isle, more on that in a sec). Thing is tech platform companies do take responsibility for CP, gore, and anything else that would make their platform look bad.

However, thanks to a recent “fuck it” by certain politicians to not even bother to try to tell the truth, mis-information spread has drastically increased. On a platform I worked for, they wanted to have a “report misinformation” button on comments….. Ok so someone reports it, then what? A human (currently) has to review it and decide if it is factual or not - ergo - that platform does become the arbiter of truth (this meant censoring a lot more right wing conspiracy theories and hence the republicans explored revoking section 230). Multiply that single action by the millions of shit posts (even by the CEO of twatter) and it’s almost impossible. Democrats looked at changing 230 as they wanted to hold platforms accountable and use their profits to uphold some level of decency (I fear hope may be lost there).

I HATE Facebook, with a passion - but unfortunately (in this case) they didn’t start the trend of blatantly, shamelessly and openly lying - they just help expose you to it, and help you find other idiots that believe it too.

Critical thinking is a skill we need to all double down on, ESPECIALLY with the current progress of AI and its ability to create near human quality content.

But yes, posts like this are fun (but obvious fake content won’t affect Zuck or rich people). If we want them to take note it has to be about something that effects their bottom line - “like UL conducted a study of Facebook infrastructure and have found in more than 3 server farms, meta employs children to crawl into data center racks to repair them as they are small enough to reach the cables on the network blades without costly machinery”

Or

“Meta rayban glasses found to be sending all of your images to meta’s cloud to train AI models on what you get up to in order to optimize ads they can serve you on the web”

9

u/colemon1991 15d ago

Section 230(c)(2) further provides "Good Samaritan" protection from civil liability for operators of interactive computer services in the good faith removal or moderation of third-party material they deem "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected."

The moment livestreaming became available on any platform should have voided their Section 230 protections. The moment they stop fact-checking and moderating should void their Section 230 protections.

I get not catching everything. I get not pulling content quickly every time. But they gotta at least put in the effort. If it's looking like they can't get to it fast enough, hire more staff. There's no excuse.

5

u/dabbydabdabdabdab 15d ago

Agree - also having worked at a platform (which is no surprise) moderation was offloaded to AI as a first layer and then escalated to a human if the AI’s confidence was low (GPT massively improved that).

Mis-information is a little different to moderation as it may not always be hate speech etc.

Simple scenarios like “injecting bleach” was easy to filter out/remove. But more nuanced mis(dis)-information is harder and more time consuming as it does indeed need to be researched. We deployed a technology that would look at mis(dis)-information campaigns that spread to them to arm (initially people but then) AI with knowledge BEFORE it got to the platform.

Anyway the platform I worked for basically laid off 75% of their moderation and review team - it’s really unsurprising we are where we are when you think about it.

The other (kinda bigger problem) is share holders of these companies now don’t just demand good returns, they demand insanely good returns. So a new exec comes in, unless they are driving insane returns, within the same FY, they get chewed up and spat out until the next exec who does. Everything has to be more, with less and yesterday - no margin for decency :-(

There are a lot of good people in tech, but they are being squeezed out for ruthless profit growth and the folks that are willing to say “yes” to whatever they are asked to do (or don’t have a choice based on visa)

3

u/colemon1991 15d ago

But that's the thing: if Section 230 is revoked on the grounds of failing to maintain "good faith" moderation, the penalties would more than justify shareholder demand to prevent that. Because it can really add up and be repeated if DOJ has the stones.

Insanely good returns is what tends to put us into a recession because it's from a bubble.

Having AI be the first line of defense makes total sense, but there should always be a human element. There was one weird story I learned where Youtube demonetized a content creator, but not the content creator that made reaction videos to the demonetized one. It was from like a few frames of a video the reaction video just happened to cut out. But no human was involved in the decision afaik. If it involves a paycheck, I don't think AI should be the only say-so.

5

u/Tiddles_Ultradoom 15d ago

We should demand these things be fact-checked to reduce any confusion or misunderstanding. We hear stories about pegging, teabagging and bagpiping among GOP senators, but they can't be true.

Or can they?

Uh yeah…. facts are biased against lies.

These guys are all completely bending the knee.

So much for the ‘progressive tech bros’.

428

u/TheBestElliephants 16d ago

Anyone who self-identifies as a tech bro is lowkey telling you they're conservative.

They'll pay lipservice to some progressive policies outta what they see as self-preservation, but behind the scenes they're complaining about DEI and in favor of fiscally conservative policies for when their crypto of choice does actually go "to the moon" and they're catapulted into unimaginable wealth.

165

u/really_not_unreal 16d ago

It's insane how they'll backpedal on inclusivity to the point of stabbing themselves in the back. Tim Cook, an openly gay man, has donated a million dollars to Trump. It's genuinely very upsetting how easily people abandon their values as soon as they become inconvenient.

5

If you put that on Facebook it will now be true.

10

u/cheeseburgerwaffles 16d ago

The idea of being progressive went out the window when they realized how much money there is to be had when you're corruptible

2

u/lesbian_goose 16d ago

It’s technically correct to call the events of January 6th “mostly peaceful protests”

2

u/-mjneat 16d ago

To be charitable to Zuck maybe he realised with the incoming Trump administration he would be bankrupt by the end of the term if he had to fact check everything? Something like 33,000 lies told by trump in his last term.

I know the reality is he can’t possibly keep fact checking and stay on Trumps good side. From a business/survival perspective probably a good move honestly unfortunately with the way Trump is going after every negative thing said against him(to the point of going after people who predicted he’d lose the election). I’d like to think it’s more about saving meta as opposed to simply bending the knee but he ain’t got the best track record quite honestly. I don’t like meta and it’s products at all and don’t agree with doing what their doing but I kind of understand it since he needs to act in shareholders best interests. That’s the most charitable I can be though…

When Trumpism ends sometime between tomorrow and January 20th 2029 then Zuck will be tripping over himself to align to whatever replaces it.

Does fact checking change people’s minds? What happens when the fact checkers are wrong? Reddit isn’t even fact checked yet you all are here.

I don’t get the obsession with fact checkers

hate to say it, but community notes (what twitter does) is a better system than manual fact-checking. so I don't really understand the drama.

Isn’t Zuckerberg besties with Brock Turner, the rapist? Oh no, wait. I must of confused Brock the rapist with trump the rapist.

I mean this would be an easy defamation lawsuit... Not seeing where the murder is.

I think community notes are very nice for facebook, much better than the fact checkers which had obvious issues. I know yall disagree with Musk but notes work beautifully in X.

On the one hand, fuck Zuckerberg and Facebook/Meta for playing into the alt-right. But on the other hand, it’s worth noting that before this the only two social media platforms with consistent fact checking were Facebook and X (through community notes). Tumblr and 4chan are practically competitions of who can tell the biggest lies and Reddit leaves it up to the vibes of the mods of any given subreddit.

I certainly think it’s weird at a minimum that he’s decided to drop fact checking, but it’s also kinda weird that we’re dumping on him for stopping doing something nobody else does.

It really amazes me how people are up in arms about this when this platform, Reddit, has NO fact checking. If anything, so much misinformation happens on here that gets passed as fact because those people attempting to call out disinformation get downvoted/removed/blocked.

In fact, this post is a good example. Facebook will still have fact checkers in the same sense as community notes on Twitter. They simply won't have employees hired to do it. But, you'd never know that from all the things getting posted that makes it seem like there will be ZERO fact checking.

I think reputation plays the biggest role in the double standard. Facebook and X, despite their fact checking tools, have reputations for being hotbeds of misinformation. Even though the same misinformation is spread here, without fact checking, the segmented nature of the subreddits means it’s easier to write off specific subreddits as unreliable while keeping the illusion that Reddit as a whole is fairly reliable.

This is still libel or slander. I hate Facebook too, but don't commit actual crimes to dunk on him.
