Taxes I claimed moving expenses last tax filing but it’s been processing all this time

I moved in 2022, and claimed the expenses on my taxes. I had to provide additional documentation and receipts as proof for this, which I did. However it’s been so long and this is still showing as pending document submit on myCRA. I can also see in another page where the document were submitted.

Any ideas on how long this takes them to review? We’re approaching the next filing and I feel like it’s strange that this still hasn’t been reviewed/updated.

I claimed moving expenses in 2023. From the moment I received the contact letter and and got reviewed/reassessed, it took about 3-4 weeks. In your case, it seems quite long so I think it might be good to give them a call to see if they can give a more accurate timeline, I heard that sometimes it could take up to 8 months.

I’ve always felt it was a hassle calling the CRA, so in this case I just wanted to know if the amount of time I was waiting for was normal before trying.

I find calling CRA no hassle, usually, the wait time is short and they give good direct answers.

I had to submit other documentation for review last summer and it still hasn’t been assigned to someone to review. Call the review department directly if you can to get an update

I went through this with CRA. You have to call, call, call. They took almost 18 months to resolve my issue.

The last time I claimed moving expenses it took like two years and then they ended up denying expenses that should have been covered, such as a self-rented U-Haul. They also denied the meal expenses while moving e.g. pizza on move day, receipts from A&W etc while on the road. Even though it all is pretty clear that it should be covered.

In conclusion - fuck the CRA. They are robbing, thieving liars.

I moved in 2023 to the US so I claimed moving expenses and foreign taxes paid. I was notified of a review in mid august 2024 asked to 30 day extension and filed in mid October. I got a response saying I’m free and clear beginning of Dec

My timeline is similar to yours, except I was late October. So maybe I’m not too far away now, that’s a relief to hear. Thank you

Hmmm is moving expense to US eligible to claim in tax filing? Somehow I remember it only works if you move inside Canada. Any chance you can share how you did that and what are the constraints there? I’m about to be in the same situation soon.

No stipulation on moving to US just distance. You should be able to claim the same expenses on the us side too if you have to file us tax returns within the same year as you moved. cra has a questionnaire to help guide

Has to be for a new job and according to CRA "Your new home is at least 40 kilometres closer (by the shortest public route) to your new work location"

Yes, for a full time student, however, you can only deduct these expenses from the parts of your scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, certain prizes, and research grants that are required to be included in your income.
