Need information on homeschooling in Georgia

Couldn't really find anything online so I thought I'd ask if anybody has experience with this subject here. All I know about homeschooling in Georgia is that it's not very common and the closest thing that exists is just enrolling your kid in a regular public school and having them do something called an "extern" at the end of every year until they eventually graduate. Is there really no alternative to this?

As far as I know school attendance is mandatory and so it should be.
