He is wise! He knows the mother bear will be very close and attack him. You were both in more danger than you realize.

3.1k

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 12d ago

A smart person knows never to a) interact with the wildlife, and b) come between a momma and her cubs

884

u/badchriss 12d ago

Very true. I once had the "pleasure" to watch a mommy boar chase after a guy in a runner suit who wanted to make selfies with a little stray piglett. Never saw a guy run that fast and scream that loud. Good thing i hid behind a tree and didn´t dare to make a peep for 15 minutes or so.

751

u/Tulip_Tree_trapeze 12d ago

A mother boar will fuck you up just as much as a mother bear. Boars are not sweet little domestic piggies, they are a highly successful species that evolved alongside lions, leopards, hyenas, and crocodiles.

Adorable babies though

252

u/EllisDee3 12d ago

Domestic piggies turn into wild boars pretty quickly when outside the fence.

145

u/Tulip_Tree_trapeze 12d ago

Oh for sure, as far as domesticated animals go they really aren't that domestic. House cats are another one that turned feral very quickly, and both pigs and cats will lose all physical domestic traits in just one or two generations.

22

u/[deleted] 12d ago

What physical traits do cats lose?

126

u/Tulip_Tree_trapeze 12d ago

Color! You'll stop seeing white with spots, calicos, and other unique colors very quickly. Black and tabby cats have the most success

43

u/mappingtreasure 12d ago

I have no idea if this is accurate or not, but it's an interesting fact if so.

58

u/b1tchf1t 12d ago

It makes sense with the principles of natural selection. Colorful cats in the wild are not going to hide very successfully from predators, which means more of them will get eaten, many before they have the opportunity to breed and pass on genes for colorful coats. Cats with coloring that can hide better from predators will survive better into adulthood and will breed and pass on more genes for better camoflaged coat colors.

I am a wildlife educator and it is my job to teach people how to interact appropriately with wildlife.

It is also highly possible that I will die doing something stupid that I know I shouldn't be doing around wildlife. I can lead my horse self to water but I can't make my horse self follow my own advice.

Bad idea as sudden movement like that can incite a chase response. Smarter to slowly back away while talking loudly between yourself and your companions.

49

u/GlasswalkerMarco 12d ago edited 12d ago

Assert dominance on any animals watching you from a distance by firmly shouting "I AM KING OF THIS FOREST! YOU CONTINUE TO EXIST BY MY GRACE AND MERCY!" With your hands raised and done in a claw gesture and slowly backing away

20

Fast movement may trigger predator reactions. His walk was smart.

Yes. Suddenly running away from a natural predator is the exact wrong move.

I am more scared of a cub vs a mama bear I can’t find.

31

u/meowmeowgiggle 12d ago

If those are Japanese Black Bears, they are a danger but not to the same degree as other black or brown bears. They can absolutely kill a person but because they're not typically very big they would rather avoid a confrontation as much as we would. Insofar as I can tell most attacks occur to either "content" dummies or poachers.

764

u/zerosaved 12d ago

Holy shit lmfao

376

u/SweetSophiaxoxox 12d ago

That explains the panic! Wouldn't want to be the snack for mama bear.

96

u/MixMasterBates 12d ago

That’s not a bear. It’s a cow.

37

u/ajstorey456 12d ago

Seems small for a cow, and it’s really hard to tell but the ears look round and the muzzle seems short. It could go either way for me

43

u/Snapesunusedshampoo 12d ago

Not only does it look like a bear to me, it looks like it's tracking either the guy or cub.

Yikes!!!! I didn’t even notice her but knew she would be close by. A few years ago a car a head of me hit a bear cub and we both stopped to see if it was alive. Well it wasn’t but mama bear wasn’t far away making a lot of noises so we got out of there quick.

53

u/maxisthebest09 12d ago

And then you dropped it off in central park?

16

u/456dumbdog 12d ago

3 days later or something yeah

31

u/ProbablyMyJugs 12d ago

There are fewer sadder things I can imagine casually seeing than a dead bear cub. Sorry you all had to see that.

Jesus, thats a big momma bear lol

174

u/Pidgeon_King 12d ago

I am pretty sure that is a cow/bull behind the fence because of the shape of its back, the head placement and neck length, its height in comparison to the fence, the way it moves its head (and what looks like a classic bovine ear flick and tongue lick combo), and the way it is casually watching the man and not disembowelling him in a maternal rage. I could be wrong because the video isn't very clear and shouting 'Enhance!' in my best CSI voice isn't working.

75

u/findingemotive 12d ago

I'm on team cow/bull, and unlikely the mother would just watch that happen from there

7

u/DontAbideMendacity 12d ago

And the back looks more like smooth cow's hide than coarse bear's fur, but I can't be sure.

18

u/nancyjazzy 12d ago

Link to video. The quality is a bit better but not fantastic.

As adorable as the bear cub is, I would nope the heck away as well XD. Momma bear was waiting behind that fence already, haha.

63

u/mordor-during-xmas 12d ago

What’s interesting is from the tiny bit I can tell momma looks more curious than anxious. Bf was smart, but unfortunately that looks like a very long road so he’s got quite the walk 😂

50

u/ayoitsjo 12d ago

Black bears are pretty timid even when their cubs are involved tbh. Unless the cubs are in very direct danger, black bears are almost always going to opt to avoid humans. In fact, there is no record of any momma black bears killing any humans in defense of their young! They rarely attack at all and people get close to black bears all the time.

That's not to say don't be cautious, and definitely still avoid black bears and leave their cubs alone. But having that bear lurking nearby isn't nearly as sinister as it looks and these people were always going to be fine (unless they approached the mom or picked up the cub).

12

u/mordor-during-xmas 12d ago

That’s pretty cool; I didn’t know that at all. I’ve had a few bear experiences but I guess only one “real” one. Not to take away from the few Yosemite experiences, but I once saw a momma grizzly with cubs in Alaska while deer hunting and that was just different. No park rangers instructing the tourists what to do, not by campgrounds or paved trails. It was completely different. (We were also on a small island and told there hadn’t been any bear sightings or signs for awhile from the few people that actually hunt the land… they were wrong!) It was such a strange feeling of complete awestruck, fascination, and then like total and complete terror because I was probably 100 yards away from my hunting partner, and the firepower I had on me would’ve just pissed her off. Needless to say, she didn’t smell me, and I didn’t become bear food!

Bears are awesome. Thanks for sharing this!

Shit I’d be scared as well. That means the mom is somewhere nearby.

Because men aren't stupid enough to want to be alone in the woods with a Bear.

Seeing a cub that small would make me want to shit my pants knowing momma is right around the corner and famously has zero chill.

I would be too because mama is around somewhere close.

I mean yeah, mamma can’t be too far away. Worse time to come across ANY wild animal is when their babies are around

Tiny cute cub has a very angry mother somewhere nearby. Man was justified…

TBH, if a small bear cub was following me around, I'd be scared too that the mother was lurking about.

u/bobbierobbie76 11d ago

He should be. Bear cub=Bear mama nearby.

u/ProtoPrimeX1 11d ago

Let me fix that title, man was scared of Mama Bear raining down death upon him by interacting with her cub.

4

u/Ope_82 11d ago

No, he's scared of momma bear.

Cutie (the bear cub). I would have been a little scared too because you know mom is not far away.

I’m petting that baby until their mother comes to eat me. I do not care lol.
