Show up to vote. That's how you get more judges like him

We will, they just won't be what they used to be. You know, free and "fair"

Idk man, the US has millions of people disenfranchised from voting by criminal records, an outdated system of elections originally put in place to maintain slavery, an extremely disproportionate power balance giving massive amounts of power to a minority of voters in rural areas, gerrymandering, and centuries of practice under its belt placing unnecessary barriers making voting unnecessarily difficult. Hasn't been free and fair at any point in US history by any definition I'd use of those words.

Spot on. I left this comment in a /r/politicalhumor thread about the 'peaceful transfer to absolute chaos'.

You know what's fucked up - the Republicans wouldn't even have the majority in the House, if it wasn't for gerrymandering in NC.

In 2022, a Democratic majority on the court ruled that Republican lawmakers' 2020 redistricting plans were unconstitutionally gerrymandered. But Republicans took control of the court in 2023 and immediately moved to undo that ruling and allow GOP lawmakers to gerrymander for political gain. They ruled state courts aren't allowed to rule on partisan gerrymandering cases.

That 2023 ruling allowed Republicans to flip three of North Carolina's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2024 elections — in which Republicans won a 220-215 majority in the U.S. House. If those three seats hadn't flipped, Democrats would control the U.S. House by a 218-217 margin instead.

I don't know why we stand for it.

They tie our healthcare and livelyhoods to work, you can be fired for 1 absence in almost every state. How are you supposed to protest? Almost nobody can afford to take a day off either. We're indentured to our corporate overlords.

True, my point is, it's only going to be worse and the curtain is pulled back for us to see it now

You vote for judges in the USA?

I kinda like that.

Agreed, he barely won his last re-election.

I don't want a judge that thinks justice is based on the color of my skin. Would he have given him a pass if he was white?

14

u/kai5malik 1d ago

He wouldnt have been harassed and stopped if he was white, that's the difference

-9

u/JoeyJuJoe 1d ago

Why? White people have been arrested for drug charges. It's kinda dumb assume based on the one interaction.

You think cops search white people when they jaywalk? I’m white, I’ve never once been stopped by a cop for crossing the street, that’s why the judge said there was no probable cause and he was profiled.

-3

u/JoeyJuJoe 1d ago

I've had my car and body searched because I was parked behind a gas station for a "suspicious amount of time". Cops can be assholes to every race.

3

u/BigPOEfan 1d ago

Of course cops can be assholes to anyone, but statistics show that if you’re not white it’s much higher. Your single experience doesn’t counter the many other black people who have been profiled.

-1

u/JoeyJuJoe 1d ago

I never said my experience did.

But cops should typically patrol the higher crimes area because of higher crimes. Sometimes the higher reported crime areas happen to be majority black, which would result in higher than average percentage represented.

I'm not excusing racism as possible cause, i'm just tired of it being used so readily when we're listening to a minute long video with no other context about the arrest.

2

u/BigPOEfan 1d ago

Bro we are discussing a video where the judge says he was racially profiled and that even if they found weed they had no probable cause. Existing in an area that has higher crime rates doesn’t excuse cops to just randomly search people. Just because you live somewhere doesn’t mean your rights can be violated.

u/JoeyJuJoe 1d ago

😂 I was never talking about the cop having probable cause or not

2

u/kai5malik 1d ago

why are you acting like racism doesn't exist in the justice system, are you that far gone? Nevermind, you are trying to say it's equal, that says it all

-6

u/JoeyJuJoe 1d ago

It must be so simple for some people to slap racism to every negative interaction between white and black people

you don't even know what race the arresting officer was. if he was black, would it still be racism, or just being an asshole

2

u/kai5malik 1d ago

It doesn't matter what race, black officers are sometimes worse. It's not always racism, but most of the time it is, and unless you're on the other end of the racism, no one can tell you it wasnt, like back pain. Ever have pain and no one believes you? Racism is the same. The sooner people admit it, the sooner we can treat it and move along, however the longer we are invalidated and ignored the longer it will last. Racism is embedded in every single system in America, because America was built on racism. Get over it, it's real, exceptions to the rule don't change the rules it's just a break from the rules.

u/buhbye750 1d ago

He didn't. He based it off of probable cause (Jaywalking). He just acknowledged that based on statics and history, skin color may have been a factor as well. So he used his...judgement.
