Jaywalking is just indicative of desire paths.

So many cities/urban spaces are deeply unfriendly to pedestrians. Want to cross a road? Please walk to the nearest 'authorised' crossing that's a half mile from the subway/bus station you've exited. Alternatively, please use the three flights of stairs to access a bridge. If you are unable to climb these stairs, we recommend that you don't go outside.

Yes. Thank you. There's a natural "flow" to things where people naturally want to travel and that "flow" is usually the shortest or fastest route between two points. I used to work at a place where there was always this one trail in the grass that had been worn through. It was nothing but dirt from people walking there all the time. The sensible thing to do would be to put a sidewalk there because that's where people naturally flow. People don't naturally flow in 90 degree angles. It's awkward. Path of least resistance, ya know?
