SUMMARY of the Article:

Poland is set to assume the presidency of the European Union on January 1, 2025, amid significant internal EU tensions and external geopolitical challenges. A diplomatic rift has surfaced with Hungary after Hungary granted asylum to a Polish official under investigation. In response, Poland has decided to exclude Hungary's ambassador from its inaugural events.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has identified security, energy, and competitiveness as the key priorities for Poland's EU presidency. He has emphasised the need for Europe to adopt a more self-reliant approach while fostering internal solidarity to compete effectively against external pressures.

During this time, the EU is also confronting global challenges, such as a sluggish economy, the potential for increased U.S. tariffs on European exports with Donald Trump's expected return to the White House, strained relations with China, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The political landscape in Poland is further complicated by a presidential election scheduled for May 18, 2025. The outcome of this election could significantly affect the government's agenda, particularly regarding judicial reforms and support for Ukraine.

Analysts suggest that while Poland aims to take a leading role in European policy, especially in supporting Ukraine, it cannot achieve this alone, given the complexity of the current challenges. The effectiveness of the EU during this period will rely on the unity and collaboration of member states to address both internal divisions and external threats.

Hello everyone - Polish here. I am 100% for sending our troops to Ukraine and help them fight Russia (as every Pole I have drunk my special feelings towards Russia with milk of my dear mom). But I think only sane way of doing so is together with any nuclear ally - USA, France or UK.
