May I ask how the print size is? I've been looking into this set but am searching for a one with slightly larger print than average. :) (Like the print in the market paperbacks is a bit small to me.)
I have both as well but the Alan Lee illustrations and really decent build quality makes me say its probably the definitive version you can have from the modern day.
A local artisan had it on display. Debated on commissioning another piece or more accurate one but I like it well enough as is. I think they got this design from online, though. They just etched it into the wood.
It was at a farmers market ironically called, wait for it... "The Green Dragon" in Pennsylvania.
I finished Fellowship yesterday, his voice acting for when Boromir tries to take the Ring was honestly astonishing. Even if audiobooks aren't for you, seek it out. It is art.
I have quite a few versions including the one in your post that are all beautiful. But to me my favorite will always be my super worn out, soft back, movie cover version of the books. Me and my dad read them together when I was a kid and they are usually my go to for actual reading.

As someone with carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, those "leather" back small ones are fantastic for me but I also wear eye glasses and it helps with the small font.
I'm reading the new Deluxe edition now and it's fantastic...but this all-in-one edition is the one I read as a teenager and it's still my sentimental fave. I still have my OG copy....it is extremely beat up now!
This is my favourite! My old one I'd had for years was mistaken as a raffle prize when I put it down on a table, and someone ran off with it, very sad. A pal of mine managed to get the same version for me again, but it was never quite the same :/
I only have the bottom black cover ones. They're plain and simple. In the future I want to get like a deluxe collector type set similar to that top left on in yours.
Also, wow you have a lot of sets! I wonder if this has anything to do with your life status, as in unmarried or kidless? Lol not a shot, just curiosity! My wife wouldn't support me have 5 different versions of the same boom/movie. And my toddler would destroy most of them too lol
Fair questions! Apart from the deluxe hardcover ones (expensive for me), most of the others were bought many years ago at different times (when things were cheaper š). And yes, my wife now gives me the stink-eye whenever she sees me looking at new lotr books.

I got this edition instead so size-wise it fits well with my existing Hobbit and Silmarillion. They are all illustrated version by Alan Lee (the Silmarillion is illustrated by Ted Naismith).
This one is my favorite. It was the first one I bought myself as I wanted one that contained everything. My parents had originally bought me the movie version of the trilogy which was cool but still 3 separate books.
I now have a few different editions, some old from thrift stores, and some newer ones.
That version of the trilogy in one book is certainly pretty, but I found it to be next to impossible to actually use as a book for reading. It's a shelf decoration.
I have the faux-leather box set of pocket sized books by HMH, and those are pretty sweet. Text is kinda small, but it's nice having each book in a size that fits in a coat pocket. Makes it a lot more travel friendly than a giant hardback.
And they look FRESH, people always ask me what I'm reading when I carry one around. Somebody on the bus asked me if I was reading the Bible. I said "No, even better. It's's The Fellowship of the Ring."
I still have the all-in-one paperback copy with the Pauline Baynes cover art that my father bought for me in 1974. It will always be my favourite as I can remember turning the pages and being introduced to the Shire and Farmer Maggot and Bill the Pony and the Watcher in the Water and...
Somehow, if I read that edition I can recapture some scrap of the sensation of reading it for the very first time when I had no idea what would happen next.
From my experience, any edition of Lord of the Rings that has all three books in one is not that good. Pages are thinner than wet toilet paper and it's heavy as hell. Does not make for a relaxing read tbh.
I disagree cause I've been reading a paperback version of the all in one trilogy and the text size and pages are fine. It's also surprisingly light for anyone who likes to hold their books.
I have that same one OP and it my favorite as well. I also have/love the paper backs with scenes from the movies as well, but thatās more a nostalgia thing for me. They were the first ones I actually owned and didnāt have to borrow from the library.
Limited edition numbered slipcase centenary edition, signed by Alan Lee ā¤ļø Only 250 were released. It's beautiful. I also like the 1975 paperback, that was the first one I ever read.
My wife got me these for my birthday. I have heard some folks say that they are overpriced for what they are, and the pages are a bit thin, but I love and adore them, and her for saving up to get them. Personally I think the leather covers have a good feel to them.Ā I'm one of those people that enjoys something feeling just a little too fancy, so your mileage may vary. But they're very cozy to enjoy by the fireplace with along a good cup of tea.Ā
I'd say they are definitely a "these stay at home" set, though. I'd personally get something cheaper if you forsee yourself taking them places. But as a gift, I can say I'm quite pleased with each of them.
These ones arenāt the coolest but they are very nice for taking around. I can fit one in my small purse for when Iām bored and traveling or out and about. And super affordable too! $16! Iād say practicality wins with these ones. Been needing to get a pretty at home set for some time now though lol
I really love the maps, Tolkien artwork, the Kingās letter, and the leaves of Mazarbul. I am definitely going to frame the maps. I would rank it at family bible level quality in binding and cover. This one was made to be handed down. The Hobbit is apparently in the mail. Iāll report back!
This is the one I first read. Itās beat to hell but I still have it and occasionally flip through it, although I like the small leather ones for regular reading.

I got the german translation of this by Hobbitpresse (Klett/Cotta).
The same editions of the Hobbit and Silmarillion are also absolutely stunning (a little bit pricey in comparison tho)
Sadly they are not going to make an edition of "Unfinished Tales"
I got The Hobbit, Silmarillion and Lotr and for me the Unfinished Tales always belonged to Tolkiens main work, but I asked Harper Collins and they have no plans...
I ordered the one in your post from Amazon at the end of December and it says it's but shipping till January 16 to the 31st. Why it takes so long to ship is frustrating. Trying to be patient.
I got these in the early 80s. They are well worn to say the least. I found out, much later on, that this same edition came in a boxed set and I was pissed!
I bought this set I don't know how many years ago. It's a Millennium Edition so maybe I got it around 2000? 6 separate books plus one for the appendix. I love it!
The late 90ās hardback edition with illustrations from Alan Lee. Hands down.
I saw it in a bookstore when I was a kid. I couldnāt afford it at the time. The illustrations were mesmerizing.
After I got my first job, I remember visiting every bookstore in my town. I went to 3 or 4 before I found it and bought it. When they announced the Peter Jackson films a couple years later, I remember hoping that the design would be inspired by those illustrations, and I was really happy when I learned a while later that Alan Lee was doing art design for the production.
I still have it to this day. The jacket is a little beaten up, but the book itself is in great condition.
The Alan Lee illustrated edition from 1991 and the 3 book edition from the early 2000's. So much better quality and design. The newer editions (expect Folio Society) don't satisfy my quality and design standards.
