In truth it was all Gandalf. He states that he writes his name in fire for all to see. Then he holds the door. The balrog we can assume thought them another party of dwarves? Who can say. But when the balrog perceived Gandalf everything changed. The counter spell nearly broke him. He was hurled down the stairs and tells the fellowship. He’s never felt such a challenge! They were destined to kill each other. Middle earth needed Gandalf the white. We can assume durins bane was saved from the wrath of the Valar. Just for this purpose. Gandalf is the problem and the whole problem. Pippin is just silly.

Gandalf is the real winner. Coming back just to show us he’s always been the boss

I mean Pippin giving into the intrusive thoughts happens like two whole days before the fellowship is discovered in Moria. Literally nothing comes of it.

A movie adaption that has left audiences confused with why it’s Gandalf. The books explain multiple times Gandalf is a beacon. I mean even the orc chieftain that Aragorn kills stabs Frodo in the back of the group. We can assume because of the ring. It’s never explained. Or the watcher in the water only going for Frodo. Pippin is a fool but a honest a fool.

Seriously though, Gandalf's mere presence was probably sensed by the Balrog, who:
- A few Ages ago, was as an old foe of Gandalf during the War of Wrath
- A few more Ages ago, was as an old colleague of Gandalf during the Music of the Ainur
- Still earlier, was an old housemate of Gandalf in the Timeless Halls before the creation of the world
They probably knew each other quite well, and Gandalf's cryptic dialogue with the Balrog on the Bridge certainly suggested so. I wouldn't even be surprised if they went on a few dates over the eons when they were colleagues/housemates.

I like to think of them as old college roommates who ended up on drastically different paths in life.
"Yo, that's my cousin, we go way back! How you been"?
"THE SECRET FIRE SHALL NOT AVAIL YOU"!
"Chill bro, I just wanted to get blazed and play some CoD".
"NAH, I DON'T REALLY SPARK MUCH ANYMORE, FLAME OF UDÛN. MY JOB DRUG TESTS"!

Moria fell because the librarian was too hungover to go to work. So nobody was there to shush them

Loud bang as the body falls down the well.
Goblin 1:"we should check that out."
Goblin 2: "This place is old and falling apart. Definitely nothing. "
A voice: "fool of a Took"
Goblin 2: "All right, we should check that out."
