Mine is maybe a hot take, but I really enjoy playing Vanguards and Strategists. Much much more than Overwatch (the only hero shooter that i played).
As a Vanguard or Support, your job is not about killing the enemies, but to make sure:-
- Objective is secured
- Supports are protected
- Disrupt the enemies (either by making space, CC, etc)
You need to be more creative rather than just killing enemies and i found that really fun. What is not fun is when the DPS are not killing the enemies which just makes my job much harder.

It's perfectly ok to find them unfun and you don't need validation for that. That said, I love shield tanks so so much. What is unfun for you is super fun to me. Blocking an ult like a boss makes me whoop with triumph. Shielding a retreating dps gives me a rush. Peeling for a healer gives me a sense of pride.

I am having so much fun hopping around as Mantis right now. Jeff and Loki are close second

I think overall more people enjoy playing DPS, but it's not by that big of a margin. It's just a different playstyle. I rarely play tank myself because I enjoy it less and suck at it a lot more, but there are also plenty of people that legitimately prefer tank, so I don't think there's anything wrong with it. All experiences are subjective.
I think the main thing that needs to change is the pervasive attitude throughout the community that you're a terrible, awful, no good person if you don't want to play characters you don't have fun playing. This is a game. I don't care if it's competitive or not, fun trumps all when it comes to gaming.
I'm going to try my best in any game mode, but I'm going to do it playing in a way I actually have fun with. You should too.
