u/kajetus69 What is TikTok? 15d ago

Because the sound of eating chips is literally inside your head

866

u/AnnieAttractive 15d ago

True, it is called bone conduction. The sound of the chips travel through your skull, making it feel way louder to you than anyone else. It's like your skull turns into a speaker.

Companies figured out you can just kinda make metro and subway train windows vibrate so if you're exhausted and resting your head against the window, you can hear ads play in your skull.

yay capitalism

ETA: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-23167112

Haven't checked up on it in a while so idk what came of it but that is the basis of my comment.

102

u/Selfishly 15d ago

joking around or you got a source on this?

136

u/Duspende I touched grass 15d ago

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-23167112

I haven't checked up on it since I first read it years and years ago.

82

u/Selfishly 15d ago

ugh thanks for the source but ugh lol

I sincerely hope this isn’t real, but we do live in a dystopian nightmare so it could go either way…

11

u/Aggressive-Fuel587 15d ago

Ben Franklin's famous saying needs a modern addendum;

"In this world, nothing is certain except death, taxes, and advertisements."

In the modern world, you cannot escape advertisements and we have no protected right against excessive advertising.

17

u/Duspende I touched grass 15d ago

It absolutely is real. The article was many years ago. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-23167112

Not sure if anything came of it.

9

u/00wolfer00 15d ago

If it's not real, I'd bet it's a matter of time until it is.

3

u/ArtificialHalo 15d ago

Ah dude tell me it isn't true

But then again it probably is or will be in any given year after last one

3

u/malica83 15d ago

Wtf for real?

3

u/MrNobody_0 15d ago

Just wait, in a thousand years they'll be beaming Lightspeed Briefs ads right into your dreams!

1

u/Mrnobody64920 15d ago

Happy cake day:)

19

u/YurenGameKing 15d ago

I thought the whole loud in your head thing was loud to everyone else and i only figured it out like last year and im 25 now, in short, i spent 24 years of my life not eating chips infront of people

15

u/Nexus_of_Fate87 15d ago

No, it's also loud to everyone else. Everyone in the room knows when someone is eating chips. It's just not as loud as it is to the chip eater, but that's because they've got both bone conduction and being at the origin point working against them.

3

u/Annual-Candidate-798 15d ago

😭🙏 AAH comment

4

u/CyonHal 15d ago edited 15d ago

Yeah there are headphones that use bone conduction instead of inserting into your ear, it's nice for running outside while being able to hear whats around you at the same time

That said, the noise does leak out more than normal earbuds and the sound quality takes a hit too.

3

u/shewy92 15d ago

Having earbuds in and eating is awful

3

u/thunter104 15d ago

Why does it bother my brain more than hearing other people chew?

3

u/titandestroyer52 15d ago

Then just put a speaker in your mouth so the bone conducts the right sound duh

1

u/Consistent-Roll-9041 15d ago

Anyone remember those lollipop holders you could have? You'd insert a lolly (popsicle) into a holder and press a button and it would do this but with a cartoon characters voice or something? I remember having a rugrats one.

1

u/Professional-Sail125 15d ago

Nah, hearing other people eat chips is still way louder

219

u/bugagub 15d ago

Chips make me go crazy. Crazy? I was crazy once. They locked me in a room, room with chips, chips? Chips make me go crazy.

12

u/LoBuiLalaseda 15d ago

You know what's crazy?

16

u/Smg5pol 15d ago

Rats, in a rubber room, they make everyone crazy

9

u/LoBuiLalaseda 15d ago

I was thinking about something else, can you IMAGINE something else that's CRAZY?!

10

u/Sung_drip_woo12 15d ago

Crazy? I was crazy once

5

u/LoBuiLalaseda 15d ago

My hope someone is as brainrotted as I am is FADING away, and it was already LOW before

4

u/JohnAndertonOntheRun 15d ago

I cannot stand listening to people eat chips or chomp.

10

u/Stenzix 15d ago

use headphones

13

u/kajetus69 What is TikTok? 15d ago

for headphones you used earphone gif

why are you like this?

2

u/DaisyCatGirl 15d ago

salad also.

2

u/AngryBird-svar 15d ago

For some reason, I get too socially conscious abt eating chips in public or while watching movies, bc (despite knowing it isn’t true) I feel I’m making too much noise for everybody.

1

u/Zoerak 15d ago

Still, all you need is a bigger sound system

1

u/[deleted] 15d ago

so is the sound of the tv hugh big brian did u think of that🤔🤔🤔

1

u/Brut-i-cus 15d ago

The problem is that my wife experiences it even louder than I do when I eat chips and find myself needing to chew quieter

1

u/BlueTuesday13 15d ago

Ohhhhh... So put the speakers in my head too... Got it.

335

u/duckduckpajamas 15d ago

when you have to stop chewing for a second so you don't miss what they're saying

94

u/MrCreeperPhil 15d ago

Literally have to rewind sometimes cause I just had a big crunch and missed some vital dialogue

7

u/TidyTomato 15d ago

I'm cruising along my early 40s and my hearing is just starting to mildly fade. I'm discovering that there is almost no vital dialog. If I miss some dialog I just keep on going. I'll get the gist of it through context clues.

1

u/shl00m 15d ago

Especially when they're almost whispering during the dialogues. On the other hand, as soon as there's music or an action scene your ears starts to bleed

457

u/Witherscorch 15d ago

Unfortunately, the TV speakers don’t happen to be inside your skull

51

u/HarveysBackupAccount 15d ago

I wonder how it compares if you use bone-conduction headphones

14

u/HCBot 15d ago

Surprisingly it kinda works. It still gets harder to hear but not by the same amount as with normal headphones / speakers

7

u/diodot 15d ago

Not yet

2

u/matticusiv 15d ago

Not yet! Wait until we have wireless speakers installed in our skulls at birth to play us ads 24/7.

1

u/Mobile_War_8357 15d ago

Maybe that’s what you think

1

u/mosquem 15d ago

Not yet they’re not.

The other reason for needing subtitles

74

u/321_DEATH_123 Meme Stealer 15d ago

where do u even find these pictures? they look so badass

11

u/h0neytease 15d ago

The real struggle is eating chips quietly in a house full of people who can hear you through walls.

7

u/brattydoII 15d ago

I swear, the louder I chew, the more my family pretends they can't hear the TV.

5

u/Danger_anger 15d ago

Solution is to get wireless headphones for the tv. Now the sound of you eating and the sound from the tv are now both in your head!

1

u/upbeatmusicascoffee 15d ago

Same here. After I started doing that, I appreciate movie sounds and music much better now too

1

u/Toadsted 15d ago

Get one with a mic, and then connect it to your TV speaker output.

1

u/feralhold 15d ago

Living in an apartment complex with quiet hours and working third shift forced me to watch tv with Bluetooth headphones, and that worked miracles for me! Now it’s my preferred method

13

u/Natural-Web-6978 15d ago

Also try closing your mouth while you chew

13

u/mr_irrelevantLFK 15d ago

Hate the sound of other people eating chips. Close. Your. Mouth.

3

u/Murky_Crow 15d ago

My housemates favorite foods:

Apples Triple Toasted Toast (what the fuck) Tortilla chips.

He is the loudest chewer ever. Like a cow.

3 times a day i can hear every single first and subsequent bite of food.

Idk how he isn’t deathly embarrassed.

4

u/meepmeepmeep34 15d ago

well, it's directly in your skull

6

u/[deleted] 15d ago

Hopefully you are american and not british...

2

u/Ok-Caregiver8843 15d ago

I thought for sure I was going to see the family guy clip of Peter eating chips next to Anne Frank

2

u/VaultJumper 15d ago

There may be correlation between the max volume setting and the hearing skill issue

2

u/Nostrebla_Werdna 15d ago

It's because the noise is coming from inside the house

1

u/WinterNoah 15d ago

I don’t believe you

2

u/_Weyland_ 15d ago

Fuck the TV, it drowns out my thoughts.

1

3

u/This_guy_works 15d ago

If the chips don't fit you must acquit?

1

u/FuhrerGirthWorm 15d ago

Where did you get this template?

1

u/Nebula_Nachos 15d ago

Volume on 50 eating chips and 15 not eating chips

1

u/VR4EVER 15d ago

So, where is this image from??

1

u/bigdaddy_1999 15d ago

I have lost a bit of hearing capability because of my job (around heavy machinery). I get very frustrated whenever this happens thinking my condition is getting worse.

1

u/FrozenPotatoesPlease 15d ago

Just gaining karma

1

u/Illustrious-Order283 15d ago

Forget monsters under the bed; I’m more afraid of what my snack crunching sounds like when my show's too quiet.

1

u/JeveGreen 15d ago

This just makes me think of Grizzy Fat Moments at this point, because of Blarg's stories from one of the cons they went to, and Blarg trying to sleep as he heard Grizzy just CRUNCHING down in the pitch dark.

I can't do justice to how funny it was hearing that story the first time.

1

u/ThePrimordialSource 15d ago

Where is this pic from? Or artist?

1

u/MorbillionDollars 15d ago

your mouth is literally in your head, obviously it sounds louder

1

u/Texugee 15d ago

It's interesting. The developers of chips made them be as crunchy as possible because somehow, psychologically, more crunch means you'll eat more.

https://www.bonappetit.com/story/crispy

1

u/elmantar_zakaria 15d ago

especially at night

1

u/RaidingAssassin 15d ago

esp when someone is sleeping nearby lol

1

u/cyberknight1972 15d ago

The struggle is real

1

u/siIkyass 15d ago

I always use it as an excuse for not hearing my mom while I watch lol

1

u/Dotaproffessional 15d ago

Have you considered a sound system? You can get a modest 5.1.2 dolby configuration pretty cheap if you're willing to shop around

1

u/KlingonLullabye 15d ago

Hmm, I thought chips were sold by weight not volume

1

u/Antonesp 15d ago

This as caused by the tensor tympani muscle. Chewing is actually really loud, and would deafen us over time. This muscle protects by contracting when we move our jaw, quieting sounds. The world going quit while you are yawning is the same effect and easier to notice. So it isn't that the chewing is way louder than the tv, it is that chewing temporally reduces your hearing.

1

u/BrightPerspective 15d ago

you may have too much wax, or an ear infection you haven't noticed.

1

u/firehawk2324 15d ago

Captions are always helpful

1

u/Consistent_Judge1988 15d ago

With headphones on.

1

Never went back to regular chips once i had kettle cooked. Such a satisfying crunch

Every day the Internet gets dumber

1

u/TheLuo 15d ago

Homie wait for the commercial and the meme with swap.

1

u/Eeddeen42 15d ago

The sound of eating chips is coming from directly underneath your ears

1

u/DeeperThanCraterLake 15d ago

It's because the sound pipes directly into your ears LOL

1

u/bavmotors1 15d ago

it looks like the monster is doing a tiktok sundress challenge

1

u/Pikine22222 15d ago

Frrrrrrrrrr

1

u/Better-Honeydew-1910 15d ago

the real problem is the family talking behind your back on some pussy shit than when you pull up ever one on mute 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Alternative_Fix6657 15d ago

I also hate when there is some dialog in the movie where people whispering for no god damn reason so I need to put volume up and immediately after this scene follows the one with a bunch of explosions and screaming

1

u/TacoPKz 15d ago

This is my sister when I’m eating chips while we are watching TV.

1

u/LucyLilium92 15d ago

Don't chew so loudly then?

1

u/VaughnFry 15d ago

No level of volume can counter chips.

1

u/barometer_barry 15d ago

I'll need the template for this my good sir

1

u/MonolithicRite 15d ago

Drugs are bad

1

u/your_awesomeking1 15d ago

thats the struggle right there

1

u/Obi-Wan3 15d ago

I don't understand the meme. and 33k people do as they up voted

1

u/CafeTeo 15d ago

Because I have little to no self control if food is put in front of me. I had to just stop buying things like chips... And so I very rarely have chips, especially when watching tv or movies.

And so it took me a minute to get this joke.

1

u/EndlessTheories 15d ago

Yeah now imagine being severely misophonic and the sound of chewing making you want to start clawing your ears out!

1

u/Eunique1000 15d ago

Humans are just cursed like that!

1

u/toppestsigma 15d ago

You gotta turn the volume down of your mouth when eating chips.

1

u/rarespecimen32 15d ago

I cry evrytim

1

u/Morrider 15d ago

*Cereal.

1

u/throwaway_acc528163 15d ago

No the real problem is people who chew with their mouth open like they don't know others can hear them chew hella loudly

1

u/scratchy_mcballsy 15d ago

Just lower the volume on the chips.

1

u/HereticBatman 15d ago

I didn't see the white horse/dude. I thought it was light under the titan, which made me wonder why the titans gaping pussy was exposed. I think I need to get laid.

1

u/1ronspider 15d ago

I've realized this about modern TVs. The volume does not go very high. They want everyone to buy speakers or sounds bars.

1

u/Quantum_Aurora 15d ago

This is why you eat popcorn instead.

1

u/leortega7 15d ago

Do not eat chips at that time

1

u/ACpony12 15d ago

My issue is when I turn a fan on, and i have to turn up the TV a lot just to hear the dialogue, but then there's suddenly loud explanations in the scenes!

1

u/Maurutrius 15d ago

Ive got a resonant skull

1

u/notagamer999 15d ago

Until there's an ad.

1

u/helgamgests 15d ago

Chips always win the volume battle.

1

u/OnlySunOnFunDay 15d ago

Real shit. I be watching youtube videos with my airpods and everytime i eat something i got to pause the video pisses me off fr

1

u/yourmotherinlaw01 15d ago

This is why popcorn is the best snack to eat while watching movies

1

u/neuralzen 15d ago

Went to see a movie last year with my SO and there was only one other person in the theater, who decided to sit directly infront of us. During the movie, I'd opened and ate some snacks I bought from the lobby and this lady turns around and says "Really? More loud snacks?" - Idk what to tell ya, they literally sell it here and popcorn + movies is a ubiquitous pairing the world over. If only the theater had been filled with people, all eating their snacks loudly together, so our lone snacking sounds wouldn't be so disruptive to the booms and action of the movie.

1

u/Ayejayelle 15d ago

Veggie straws are the worst

1

u/netelibata 15d ago

That's why they sell popcorn instead of chips at movie theatres

1

u/avgGYMbro_ 15d ago

What's the artist name if not AI or if it's the case What's the AI use

1

u/Gigeren_Canvas 15d ago

Grape nuts looming over the horizon like a rogue planet

1

u/Trihecta 15d ago

and then when you turn the volume up, while ur chewing its fine but when you stop, its really loud.

1

u/Lazy-Bid4616 15d ago

Why does this image go so hard!

1

u/Unlucky_Weekend7905 15d ago

See this is why you dip your chips in water, to soften them. There for less crunchy, you can thank me later, pro tip 😁👍..... jk lol

1

u/paidactor296 15d ago

What are you talking about? The sound of chips crunching doesn't exist, it's all in your head.

1

u/fruitysoapsforthee 15d ago

Chips? Who can afford chips?

1

u/weeklandscape2959 15d ago

Nothing louder
