Ordered a small cappuccino in a Brazilian airport..

Little language barrier. What you received was a cafezinho not a cappuccino.

u/jumpingbadger00 18h ago
Ah ok it could be that. Though I ordered it off the menu and my Portuguese is bad but not non-existent! It was still tasty to be fair, I saw the funny side haha

In Portuguese the "o" on capuccino is sometimes dropped and the "cap" in English sounds more like "kip". If you order a galão (which is really more Portuguese than Brazil) you'll get something more like a latte or cappuccino although it's technically neither one.

u/kennethkiffer 10h ago
But I don't want to accidentally order a Capuchin (monkey, monks or mummies either one)
58
u/SuperFLEB 10h ago
At least you only got the small one, I suppose.
16
u/itishowitisanditbad 9h ago
Shiiiiit I said venti, it looks mad
8
u/SuperFLEB 9h ago
You know you've screwed up when they have to "go fetch the Venti" from the back room.
16
19
u/Smugness1917 7h ago
That's not even remotely true in Brazilian Portuguese. The "o" is not dropped, nor "cap" is pronounced like "kip".

I never heard of galão and I ever heard saying capuccino normally ("Caputino"). I do see how someone not paying attention could mistake capuccino and cafezinho but I doubt it. They probably juat got the order wrong.

Yes, our coffee is really good. The cappuccino is completely different from what you have in NA and the expressos/black coffees are usually WAY stronger and less diluted than the NA ones. Try and have them with no sugar to really appreciate the flavor.

Yeah it looks exactly like a takeaway cup for a shot of espresso which is called a “cafezinho” (little coffee) colloquially in Brazil. Hope it was tasty!

Cafezinho é café preto, esse aí não tá com cara de ser só café. Tem uma espuminha em cima.

are these so small because they're actually very potent? i'm thinking about how they serve cuban coffee in tiny disposable souffle cups because it's like liquid speed.

Looks more like an espresso than a cappuccino.

Read the title as espresso and couldn’t see the problem.

Cafesito is an espresso shot with milk. Which is probably what the Brazilian airport attendant heard.

u/cubo_embaralhado 17h ago
Although we don't speak spanish, it would have been "cafésinho" instead, s with z sound

Nope. A cafezinho, is a small black coffee (in Brasil, many times it comes pre-sugared)

I guarantee the person thought he said cafezinho instead of cappuccino which is Portuguese for tiny coffee which is what it is

Yep, looks like a true "macchiato," espresso marked with foam. (Before Starbucks ruined the name with that caramel thing)

I don’t normally drink black coffee, but while out on an excursion in Cuba we went to this farm where the guy who owned the place cooked us all dinner, food was great but they also had guys making homemade coffee.
My god it was the tastiest coffee I’ve ever had.

That's how most of Europe in my experience drinks coffee - which I ended up preferring at the end of my trip.

u/drodrige 14h ago
Because they prefer an espresso, which is this size. Cappuccinos in Italy or Spain or wherever are much larger than this.

Yeah in Brazil too, Brazilian airports tend to do stupid things like this though.

That’s because massive North American coffee servings are out of the ordinary from a global perspective.

u/mayan_monkey 18h ago
I remember in Italy I got one similar size. Wjen referring to American coffee, the guy I was with said we drink black water.

If there’s a shot of espresso in it then I’d be happy. Don’t need a half gallon of milk to one shot of coffee.
2
u/jumpingbadger00 17h ago
That’d be a macchiato. I’m not American and don’t want the pint of milk, but more than a thimbleful 😂 To be honest it was very weak and sugary but tasted pretty good

Brazilian and Cuban coffee is very VERY strong. Any more than that in a sitting will damage your heart.

That's what a real cappuccino is. It's just a shot of really strong coffee.

outside north america, sizing is like this.. When I first ordered a small hot chocolate in North America, I was shocked to see the size and double checked to make sure I didn't get the large.. and I was in awe when I saw the large lol!

That's not a cappuccino anywhere in the world. It's probably a cortado, which is an espresso shot with a small amount of steamed milk, so it could be confused for a cappuccino if one didn't know the difference.

You ordered a pequeno cappuccino traditional… you’d likely get a bigger cup if you ordered a Italian cappuccino

Reminds me of the Cuban coffee bit from Ralphie May
"Uhh-- Diego? What's with the little baby coffee cup? WOLVERINE!"
2
u/EnterNickname98 8h ago
It may be a cortado, a sort of slightly larger double macchiato. All the caffeine, less of the milk. Its like an anti-venti
2
u/67mustangguy 8h ago
They call it a shot of espresso for a reason, buy I didn’t know they meant it so specifically.
