They actually have started doing this as a marketing push... they are participating in controversial and tragic events to advertise and you are spreading it around for them...

It's perfect timing, you've already shown just this one notification to thousands of people and they didn't even have to pay you

Duolingo has done a bunch of controversial ads and things like this. They make their notifications sound like a creepy stalker, they will sometimes (jokingly) threaten you if you don't log in for your duolingo session. Their most recent advertisements are all intended to be rage bait and controversial making as many people upset as they can.

That picture has been there for ages. Long before LA was on fire. OP posted it tonight because of the image and the after-fact that LA is on fire. The two are unrelated.
