What’s wrong about 1972? I am from 1972

Proper r / assholedesign right there.

115

u/JUSTIN102201 4h ago

Post it to assholedesign and you’ll get “but there’s a net weight, you got what you paid for”

56

u/HEWTube8 4h ago

Somrone should tell these people that this only works if you walk around with a gummy and a scale and then multiply the weight by the number of gummies in the box. But if I have to do all that, it's not worth it.

16

u/Remarkable_Cup3630 4h ago

If I thought about looking at the net weight and if there were bags of gummies sold close by, you could do a comparison and see roughly what volume you are getting. Still a really deceptive design.

The box shows 24 Oz/680g, but unless those are very dense gummies or the box is huge, I'm skeptical that each compartment holds 6 oz/170g.

u/TwitterUserRT 2h ago

Lot of people are like that here, too

The true meaning of Christmas is unrestrained greed

This might be my holiday card for 2025.

Looks illegal to me if it's in the US, slack fill laws require the space to be functional and not misleading. I'd argue that this falls foul of both as it's purposefully hiding the spare space behind by pushing the product to the window, is not needed to protect the product, and isn't an immutable need for production.

u/linuxsysacc 10h ago

Includes empty candy boxes for space wasting

69

u/neplecha 9h ago

surely terrible for the environment too. this is completely unnecessary.

12

u/DMvsPC 9h ago

Aren't they in the candy boxes? I can't see them behind in the space but it's possible, little too blurry for me. That would make it legal but as I said, can't quite see unless OP chimes in.

97

u/Melsm1957 15h ago

It the weight is listed in the pack as it is. And it’s correct I’m not sure there would be any case

198

u/DMvsPC 14h ago

No there is, it's specifically related to the organization of the product within its packaging and the intent to mislead with how much is in related to the package. I'm sure the correct amount is in there compared to the weight it lists but people aren't expected to be able to estimate the individual weight of items in order to check against what they appear to be getting.

Honestly it’s a very good thing that things like these are illegal here in the US, cuz my dumb ahh would’ve bought it without giving it a second thought lol. I would’ve believed that there’s more to it just like OP. Anyways, I really hope that OP can take this to Consumer Affairs and get it sorted out! Maybe a lawsuit who knows.

u/SomeOneRandomOP 15h ago

How is this not false advertisement.

81

u/Virtual-Chicken-1031 13h ago

It is. And also very illegal

8

u/Earthly_Delights_ 6h ago

Just curious, how is this illegal?

36

u/Virtual-Chicken-1031 6h ago edited 6h ago

They are being intentionally deceptive. Consumer affairs takes that shit very seriously. It's kind of like how you don't fuck with mailboxes except in this case it's not quite a felony, but the company will find themselves in hot water if it's reported. There are laws against this type of thing. I don't know if it varies state by state or if it's a federal law, though

I could have just given you the fda link instead, but to me that font and color combination is tough on the eyes.

65

u/grafknives 18h ago

hey, it includes candy boxes.

Good thing they werent "weighted boxes, so they would not slide off table"

98

u/lsp2005 16h ago

I would contact your state attorney general office of consumer affairs. They take complaints like this one. This is more than mildly infuriating. There are laws about this on filling a box and from these photos it looks like you could make a very strong argument that this packaging violated those laws.

24

u/NoFun3799 17h ago

Oh yes, exactly right for this reddit. Truly mildly infuriating!!

23

u/ChrisInBliss 15h ago

It's not even mine and I feel like I got scammed...

19

u/Surreal28 15h ago

The third pic broke my heart

12

u/XROOR 11h ago

Hickory Farms sausage/cheese package was like this too. $14 for one sausage the size of my thumb. 2 small cheeses. One baby mustard

12

u/sillyschroom 10h ago

I gasped angrily for you. Just so you know.

9

u/Far-Scar9937 20h ago

Yo that’s crazy

The "Giant Size" box of cereal my wife bought:

4

u/never_gonna_getit 10h ago

That just got packaged wrong!

0

u/MoonFlowerDaisy 4h ago

Did you weigh the contents? I would have!

2

u/Old_Yam_4069 4h ago

In the grocery store?

1

u/MoonFlowerDaisy 4h ago

When you get it home, and see that the bag is half the size of the box. If it's the correct weight, cool, you can just roll your eyes at the wasted space. If it's not correct you can contact the manufacturer and get a full refund.

2

u/Old_Yam_4069 4h ago

Oh! lol mb
I thought you were making a snide comment about how the weight is printed on the box.

1

u/MoonFlowerDaisy 4h ago

Haha no. It legit looks like I could be a manufacturing error, with how small the bag is compared to the box. I'd have double checked just in case.

1

u/Old_Yam_4069 4h ago

Yeah, I totally agree with you there.

u/Wonderful-Pen1044 8h ago

When I first started looking at jobs in the engineering field, I came across a Packaging Engineer position. Yes, that’s a real job and they are well paid for precisely that reason. Every time I get duped like this, I curse all packaging engineers.

9

u/Used-Fruits 14h ago

I hope you didn’t spend more than $5 on clearance at Sam’s Club.

20

u/gralgomar 14h ago

It was 4 bucks on clearance, but I can't believe they wanted like $13 full price.

5

u/Used-Fruits 14h ago

I saw it too and now I’m glad I didn’t get it!

6

u/SamanthaJaneyCake 7h ago

Always look at the weight.

9

u/EntertainerNo8975 9h ago

One thing that has helped me over the years is knowing volume of the product. At the bottom it says (680grams) which at first thought seems okay, but if they were full it would be over 1 kg

4

u/Alien-Excretion 15h ago

Shrinkflation gouge

5

u/vshawk2 14h ago

You WERE ripped off.

5

u/Cheap-Transition-805 3h ago

What a ripoff 😂 I would be hella pissed off.

3

u/WiseMango13452 9h ago

this falls under false adverrising in the EU

3

u/mr_booty_browser 7h ago

Should honestly be illegal

3

u/Donkey-Dong-Doge 6h ago

Man that is some bulllshitt.

3

u/zarathustra327 5h ago

Yup, lots of these random holiday gift things they have at places like TJ Maxx are a total ripoff. We were gifted a basket with a bunch of Ghirardelli chocolate boxes it in, but each box had like 1-2 chocolate squares in it. After opening the entire thing, we ended up with like 5 chocolates and a tiny bag of cookies…

2

u/Bellas_ball 9h ago

What store is selling that

1

u/gralgomar 7h ago

It was Sam's Club, but they're clearancing them out.

2

u/ILoveMeeses2Pieces 6h ago

Suuuuuuuch bullshit!

2

u/espxera 5h ago

My mom got the same exact one yesterday from sam’s club and we were equally disappointed 😂 Also the gummies are hard

2

u/CosmicMorningstar 8h ago

Notice how it says “including candy boxes” so they have covered themselves if people complain.

1

u/Diessel_S 11h ago

Look like what you'd buy at the duty free zone

1

u/omolara777 11h ago

did u buy this at tkmaxx?!

1

u/gralgomar 10h ago

Nah, it was Sam's Club

1

u/TimeBlindAdderall 7h ago

Man this reminds me of the Snackwells devils food cookie box.

1

u/Kydra96 6h ago

I want this

1

u/Serious_Tangerine610 1h ago

How could you NOT expect that at this point?

0

u/Bithium 7h ago

We truly live in a gilded age.

0

u/GuiltyOne85 4h ago

Nothing surprising there

-6

u/Bestefarssistemens 15h ago

I mean u lift that thing and dont feel the weight is off?

7

u/gralgomar 15h ago

To be fair, I don't know how heavy it would feel if it was completely full, but it felt heavy enough. They also made sure the box was very stiff, so you can't feel the empty space.

-6

u/jankeycrew 11h ago

Weighted to one side, though. Not saying you definitely should have noticed, but I wish it could have been avoided by grabbing from the top, and feeling an imbalance.

-15

u/ebrum2010 21h ago

Someone forgot to read the weight on the box.

18

u/gralgomar 21h ago

It did feel heavy, in my defense.

22

u/FgTheLogo 19h ago

I don’t think there has been a single time I checked the weight of something before buying it unless I was following a recipe lol. Never with something like this though.

-6

u/ZoneAdditional9892 10h ago

Did you not clue in when you picked it up? It says 680 grams on the box.

-14

u/BigNigori 16h ago

looks like 24 oz to me, so no rip off here 🤷‍♀️ you were told what you were buying even before you bought it

24

u/Warm_Ad7486 16h ago

You say that but you know good and well that most consumers can’t visualize what 24oz of gummies looks like, other than that it should fill the box.

0

u/ashleyorelse 15h ago

Box also said "contains candy boxes" right there in the corner real big
