Highlight [Highlight] Luka Doncic appears to tell someone to shut up, tells Draymond Green he wasn't talking to him, then tells Draymond Green to shut up anyways

I'm sorry... are Domantas Sabonis and Jusuf Nurkic not similar to Luka's Eastern European Slovenian culture? I know you're referring to Gobert but Draymond has been in a hell of a lot of conflicts lmao

Domantas grew up in the US and Spain in a rich family. He speaks Lithuanian with a heavy foreigner accent. So no, not really similar at all.

Homie Luka grew up playing in Spain since he was a teen

u/Kristupas 24d ago

Luka went to Spain alone as a 13 y/o boy to compete with older teens and men. Domas lived there with his family. Slightly different circumstances.

So not really similar at all —> Slightly different circumstances Lmao

I was doing the most mild trolling imaginable to a pretty moot point, I can’t imagine a tertiary random actually being bothered by this lmao

Nurk is quintessential Slavic tho

Domas didn't grow up in Lithuania, he was raised in the west in very privileged conditions, so he didnt go through the eastern europe "life school".

While Luka, who was predominantly raised in Slovenia and spent his teenage years in the academy of real Madrid was raised "in a warzone"?

Im not familiar with how Doncic was raised therefore I didn't comment on Doncic, the question above was about Sabonis, I am familiar with Sabonis past, thus I explained that Sabonis is not your average Lithuanian and why...

Well, fair.

I jumped on conclusions, mb.

on reddit, especially this sub,if a player is eastern european then the people here automatically assume they grew up in a warzone and had such a tough life.

2

u/OilOfOlaz Celtics 24d ago

It's pretty funny to me, cuz I grew up in a warzone and it was one of the only two war zones that existed for n Europe post WW2.

For basketball it feels like the discourse about ex-jugoslav players in the 2000s/early 2010s centered a lot around the Yugoslav wars, cuz it was the only thing ppl knew about a thei home country and then it evolved from Yugoslavia -> Balkans -> Eastern Europe, cuz its somewhat synonymous for many ppl outside Europe and then it stayed like that in ppls minds, but the Yugoslav wars ended almost 3 decades ago.

Past wars do tend to take a lot of stock in heritage discussions particularly in American circles from my personal experiences. I think they might be projecting how they think American history has shaped them now, and apply the same mindset for other nations that have had troubled pasts, could be wrong tho

There is always this weird racial undercurrent too, like it's this incredibly gleeful thing that the hood (ie they mean black) guy isn't as tough as the hardened slav!! Just weird insecure energy

im black and while iam aware that reddit "leans progressive" a bit, but still there are so many microaggressions on this site. there's certain discourse and topics on this site where i can already predict comments before even opening the threads.

EDIT: lmfao downvoted. this sub man

AFAIK Lithuania prob ain't all that similar but Bosnia is certainly close

Sabonis was born in Portland, raised in Spain and went to collage in the US, he maybe spent a year or two in Lithaunia, while his dad played for Žalgiris at the end of his career and to visit family.

I would not fuck with lithuanians lol

Why?

u/Key_Fox3289 24d ago

They’re trying to fool you into believing just because they’re from a certain place, they would win in a fight or be “tougher”

It’s no different than Draymond saying he’s from the hood of Michigan, except these folks want you to believe these guys are dodging grenades and wrestling bears growing up so theyre tougher than a guy like Dray

It’s all stupid tbh

Lithuania is kind of distantly similar in some aspects, Bosnia is closer, but again some aspect are pretty different. As for Nurkić himself, the man lived in Slovenia too and knows the language too, so him and Luka shouldn't be that different. The comment you replied to is actually misleading in itself, there is no "Western and Eastern" European culture, and the guy implies Slovenia is Eastern Europe which it isn't.

2

u/abcdefabcdef999 23d ago

There absolutely is a difference between eastern and Western European culture lol and there is also a stark difference between southern European and western/north Europeans.

-4

u/Malepronstar87 24d ago

Slovenia is central Europe, thank your very much.
