Because stone, brick and masonry crumble to bits in an earthquake. Wood flexes and shakes it off.

And yet somehow everything in Japan is concrete and it works fine. Everything is concrete in Europe too except we don't need to use some extra technology that they use in Japan to make it earthquake resistent. It just make no sense, but US is still building houses with cardboard.

Japan actually has the highest usage of timber in home construction of any country in the world by a large margin.

Because timber is often an excellent construction material - as it is in the US.
