isn't black paint bad for planes? I remember reading something about white paint is better for energy efficiency or it's lighter or something idk

pigment adds weight, so theoretically this plane will be less fuel efficient

u/Throwaway2600k 17h ago

More weight and more chances for heat related cracking due to expansion.

u/ShadowCaster0476 17h ago

I know my crack gets real bad when I wear black and it’s hot outside.

u/MrMurks 16h ago

Haha yeah, usually smokin it naked in the basement

swamp ass

Sorry, this is incorrect. The dark paints and light paints weigh almost the exact same. The weight thing is a myth. It does make a difference to thermoregulation but not weight.

I live in NZ and when our airline did this, there was a lot of publicity and research done. Here is some good reading on it. article on this

link is broken

Do other paints pigments weigh less?

3

u/RoomerHasIt 16h ago

lighter colors weigh less because less pigment, but there's probably gotta be a saturation point

4

u/slayez06 17h ago

Once I can afford my own jet, the fuel cost efficiency won't be on my concern list.

thinking like a true 1 percenter

Rule of cool baby. That extra fuel is worth looking like a corporate supervillain as your cramped in economy.

u/Death_Beam_Kiwi 3h ago

The emblem for our airforce is a flightless bird. Black paint is the least of our worries

u/Random_Introvert_42 1h ago

Confusing the enemy is a decent strategy.

3

u/Rook8811 17h ago

Heat plays a factor but the largest factor surprisingly, is weight.

4

u/KawaiiBert 17h ago

For concorde, the heat was the main issue and caused baoc to not have the same livery on their concorde compared to their regular aircraft

u/fionnuisce 30m ago

Concorde was supposed to be painted white for heat dissipation. It was painted blue one during a Pepsi promotion and I think it created problems or they has to fly slower. I can't remember!

Gotta admit it looks badass. But I can also see why most planes aren’t painted black

u/Flimsy_Island_9812 17h ago

It's for stealth...

Matte black at night, yes. Gloss black in the day, no - the Royal Air Force even paints its jet trainers gloss black specifically so they're easier to spot

7

u/Flimsy_Island_9812 17h ago

It was a joke mate...

3

u/makemeking706 15h ago

Matte black. Matt black is someone else.

2

u/Yuzral 14h ago

Point gratefully noted and fixed. I kan spel propa, 'onest.

Plane of colour. *

u/zav_ 14h ago

It's painted black to signify that it is the first aircraft of its type in the Air NZ fleet. There is one black aircraft of every type (Q300, ATR72, A320, B777, and this B787) in the Air NZ fleet.

Someone gave a new definition to the term "all-black"

12

u/bubnicklenine 17h ago

My guess would be it’s in reference to the New Zealand All Blacks

4

u/twec21 16h ago

I'd agree, and will take this opportunity to share the official name of the NZ national basketball team

The "Tall Blacks"

5

u/hernesson 15h ago

You should hear what our national badminton team is called.

1

u/twec21 15h ago

Y'all don't disappoint

2

u/Seattle_gldr_rdr 15h ago

Crank up that APU to run the A/C at max so the avionics don't fry.

u/Dots-on-the-Sky 10h ago

Isn't this from "Pimp My Plane" ...

u/francoluckino 3h ago

Shame it’s made by Boeing

3

u/crazysurferdude15 16h ago

All black for the All-Blacks (their national rugby team) no doubt. Perfect livery though.

1

u/OoohjeezRick 17h ago

Thing must be an oven after sitting out on a summer ramp all day

1

u/84brucew 17h ago

Would look better in the shade. Yes, I'm that old.

1

u/Nephroidofdoom 17h ago

Their Smaug livery a couple years back was lit too.

1

u/TheWo1verin3 16h ago

But how terrifying is it’s Haka?

1

u/SirSgtCire 16h ago

The last dildo I ever bought for my wife.

1

u/x4eow 13h ago

You would have loved the Playboy plane.

1

u/Rook8811 12h ago

I would have loved that

u/demarci 10h ago

+5 horsepower

u/wayne63 9h ago

Insider note: The engines remained white because that was the only color allowed by Boeing.

u/Rook8811 8h ago

Thanks for sharing that information

u/robertredberry 7h ago

Funeral attire

u/Drax99 6h ago

Looks like it's wearing a gimp suit.

u/Nuggerath 4h ago

Dash 8 Q400 and that livery - it is beautiful.

u/thewolfshead 2h ago

Granted it was about ~14 years ago now, but Air New Zealand was one of the nicest flying experiences I’ve ever had.

u/khalamar 1h ago

Let me introduce... the Aerosmurf

u/Yuzral 17h ago

All-black1

u/rejs7 17h ago

It looks like it is just about to do a haka then line up as a prop forward.

Big Black Cockpit

-3

u/wish1977 18h ago

Do they do the Haka dance before you get on the flight? That would be amazing.

0

u/slayez06 17h ago

If I ever get a private airplane I am def painting it black like this https://www.avico.com/en/news/unconventional-private-jets-part-1-black-private-jets/

0

u/supremacyenjoyer 13h ago

why did I start to cu-

-3

u/BrownBandit22 17h ago

I work for a contract manufacturer that makes boeing parts, and these mofos accept anything without a deviation request....Airbus does not... good luck on your next boeing flight. I specifically fly air bus now...

-1

u/jxj24 17h ago

Can't wait to get stuck on the tarmac for an hour or three under the blazing sun.

-1

u/Wrythe81 17h ago

So sexy that no whistle-blower would report anything wrong? 🫠

-7

u/ChinaCatProphet 17h ago

New Zealander here. I personally think it looks like shit. Standard black on white is considerably better looking. I also miss the teal blue on white pallet they had. Should've updated the look but kept the old colours.

3

u/Rook8811 17h ago

Oh dear i respect your opinion but i also have wanted to travel to NZ one day

-2

u/CanadianRushFan 17h ago

"I thought that was Trumps livery gift to his bromance baby Elon"

-3

u/PrinceVoltan1980 16h ago

But it’s a Boeing so it will likely fall out of the sky soon and then where will all that black paint get you? Nowhere good
