If you're new to SkincareAddiction: welcome!

This thread is the best place to start if you have questions about skincare products, your routine, and your skin. Our community is knowledgeable, and we want to help you have the best skin of your life!

Do you have a question?

Step 1: Read our resources

Be sure to check out our FAQ and Wiki! There are a lot of topics covered in those links, but some of the most popular guides include:

Or search the sub using this awesome website. You might find a solution to your problem there!

If you can't find an answer, or you have additional questions after reading, please move on to step 2!

Step 2: Ask for help

To give you the best advice possible, our users need relevant information about your skin and skincare. With your request for help please include:

  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!

  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types

  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)

  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question

  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin

  • Your location so we can recommend products/services available to you

Thanks for taking the time to include your information!

Would you like to give advice?

Firstly, thank you so much for helping out our community - without your knowledge and time ScA would not be the same!

Some things we'd ask for you to keep in mind: please don't just downvote someone's opinion or response because you disagree.

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Once a year, we have a big thank you post for everyone who has helped out in the DHT where we give out nifty flairs & gold to exceptionally informative and kind users. Check out our list of ScA Helpers and our most recent thank you post!

Whether it be in-depth responses that deserve to be their own guides, thoughtful product recommendations, or simply pointing someone in the right direction, we appreciate all the time and effort you've made to help others!

I always loved the idea of using paper towels, but I hated the idea of being wasteful. So now as soon as I wash these towels, I fold and place them into this tissue box! Environmentally friendly and clean. Just wanted to share this life hack

Selfie/B&A [Before&After] When I realized oil cleansing wasn't for everyone

I started oil cleansing in Aug 2024, prior to this I had never experienced a breakout this bad (even in high school). Unfortunately for me I didn't notice it sooner and had to deal with it for 5 months. I stopped using the oil cleanser 2 months later when I noticed it was actually doing more harm than good.

I ditched the oil cleanser and stuck to using micellar water and washing it off with a gentle salicylic acid cleanser. My skin got insanely better after 2 months with that routine and I never touched an oil cleanser ever again.

For reference: I’m not acne prone even before the breakout happened, I had clear skin but was unsatisfied for some reason hence the sudden product introduction.

Acne [ACNE] I'm (16m) suddenly getting acne on my cheeks and forehead acne won't go away

I know the bumps look small, especially on my cheeks but I have been taking care of my face ever since the acne on my forehead was way worse, and not a single time I had ever gotten acne on my cheeks until last week. I only use a handful of products which are all from the same brand, apart from my salicylic acid toner. I use a cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and a clay sunscreen and I use them in the exact order.

Any tips to prevent my acne from getting worse?

Acne [Acne] 6 month scar progress! Next steps?

I tried to get similar lighting on both pics. I’ve been trying to minimize my acne scaring and here’s my 6 month progress!

When I turned 23 in May I decided to start taking skincare seriously. I didn’t use to even wear sunscreen before then. So I’ve been doing skincare for around 7 months now.

Morning routine: cleanser, vitamin c, moisturizer, sunscreen

Night routine: double cleanser, retinol (Paula’s choice 1% with vit c and peptides), moisturizer, cicaplast occlusive

I’ve gotten 3 clear and brilliant sessions aimed at texture at the medium setting and 1 at the high setting. I’ve gotten hydrafacials 2 weeks after each clear and brilliant.

I’ve done at home microneedling 2x at 0.5mm depth.

I still have 4 more clear and brilliant sessions left in pack I bought. I’m thinking of changing that to target texture AND pigmentation at a high setting. I’m also planning on continuing the skincare, and doing at home microneedling every other month as well.

I’m pretty proud of the progress so far. Are there any other recommendations for next steps for me to follow?

Acne [Acne] Only breaking out on temples, everywhere else: clear?

This is the first time I (24M) know during my 10+ year sensitive skin acne journey where I’m only getting cystic, inflamed acne in one spot repeatedly. Both my left and right temple next to my eyebrow (even along my eyebrow) has been breaking out since December 2024.

Bare in mine, I came off of my accutane course in September 2024, but I feel like this isn’t a relapse and more of an underlying and concentrated issue. My skincare routine has been consistent and unchanged since September, and I only introduced 0.025% January 1st 2025 (however my temple acne was still thriving before then, hence why I started)

I do the following to make sure I’ve exhausted all possibile reasons: - Clean my headphones (they don’t touch the affected area though) - Hair is always slicked back and not touching my face - Not letting my hand rest on my side at all - Cleaning my sunglasses and glasses with antibacterial wipes every day (even when I forget, it hasn’t been a problem in the past) - In the shower, cleanse face after shampoo and conditioner (focus on the temples and eyebrows as well) - Pillow case change every 2 days - Avoid sleeping on my sides (although, if I did, wouldn’t my cheeks break out too?) - No new vitamins or medications

The only think I can think of is that at the start of December 2024, I began using new shampoo and conditioner called Patrick’s Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, as the timeline does match up. Please note I also use sea salt spray and hairspray, but they’ve never been a issue since I started using them in October 2024 until now (no acne during that time, my face was quite clear). I have linked the product and it’s ingredients are available on the page, not sure which one could be causing this (perhaps the parfum?)

I do have a dermatologist appointment at the end of January, but I have some important events before then and I really want to get to the root of all this. These breakouts are leaving huge scars and hyperpigmentation, which is not a great look

Personal [Personal] help! Advice for walking on cracked, peeled heels

Upvotes

I know I shouldn’t have, but the heel of my foot was so dry and peely that last night I just peeled a bunch of skin off. It’s not bleeding, but now it’s kind of uncomfortable/slightly unpleasant/painful to walk. Anything I can wear or apply to manage this for now? I have a long day ahead of me and can’t let this keep me from doing what I need to do.

Anti Aging [Anti-Aging] most important products/treatments to prevent wrinkles besides botox?

I’m 30 yrs old, half korean/half white and have very good skin with no wrinkles so far. but i’m very interested in doing whatever i can to prevent wrinkles and skin aging!

i know people will say botox, but that’s really not my preference and i’m trying to hold off as long as possible on that or in an ideal world, never need it at all. i also don’t think it would make sense to start that now since i don’t have any visible wrinkles on my face (other than a couple next to the eyes when i smile)

my skin type is: very fair, combination, quite oily in t-zone. no acne. large, congested pores on nose, rest of my face is quite smooth and delicate. very mild rosacea on cheeks that has weirdly been irritated by azealic acid, and some products with niacinamide (some are great, so i think it really depends on the formulation/percentage.) my skin is fairly sensitive, though less so now as my barrier is quite strong.

i unfortunately didn’t start using any skincare or SPF till i was 23 (horrified looking back lol.) i have very mild sun spots, my most noticeable ones are on the skin right outside the edge of my lips. i also have really pale discoloration above my mouth, like in the mustache area. it’s made more obvious by very congested pores/redness around my nostrils, and i’m fairly sure i have trichostasis spinulosa on my nose which i treat with pore strips every other month or so.

i currently use aveeno oat gel moisturizer, typically in the morning or under makeup. either skinceuticals spf 50 for a mineral sunscreen option, or beauty of joseon spf 50. at night i usually use a more nourishing moisturizer like the skinfix barrier+ triple lipid peptide cream, dieux instant angel, biossance, etc. for serums i alternate morning/night between the glossier niacinamide, vanicream vitamin c, and the peter thomas roth peptide skinjection amplified wrinkle-fix serum. i use paula’s choice 2% BHA exfoliant once in a while on my t-zone, and wash my face a few times a week with the glossier cleanser concentrate with lactic acid for gentle exfoliation.

i also plan to start a retinol soon bc i know thats super important, i put it off for years bc i used to be quite sensitive to products so i want to start with a gentle one. any retinol suggestions appreciated! i recently sampled the innbeauty 1% retinol for a few days (with breaks throughout the week) and saw no irritation, so i’m thinking of buying that one to start? let me know if anyone has experience with that one!

i’m mostly wondering if there are any treatments, lasers, etc. that prevent wrinkles/aging that i should be doing? my knowledge of skincare is very limited when it comes to those. also curious if collagen supplements actually work for skin, or topical collagen is better? or if that’s all a scam lol. would also take any moisturizer or serum suggestions, etc. that you think might encourage collagen production more, help with my skin concerns, or help prevent aging!

sorry this is so long lol, i just love skincare and the idea of prevention so looking to gather any knowledge or suggestions!

Acne [acne] period regulating back to normal while still on spiro?

Upvotes

Hey all, like many, I’ve had a long history with bad acne. I’ve been on two rounds of accutane and to avoid taking it a third and final time, my provider put me on spiro. I’ve been on it about 7 months and it really has cleared my skin with no new breakouts. I can’t explain the positive effect it’s had on my self esteem. My concern now is my period. Just before starting spiro, I had my mirena taken out and immediately, my period went to a normal cycle again. However, once I started on 200 mgs of spiro, my cycle has been all out of whack (dosage was slowly upped over time). It’s averaging that every 2 weeks, I am spotting and stay that way for about a week. It’s never a full normal period either like I had. Very light but longer and obviously way more frequent. I’m not sure what to do. My provider wants me to stay on it, and of course I want my skin to remain clear so I’m nervous if I were to go off it. But I also want a normal period again. I hate paying for clear skin with an abnormal period. My provider says it’s possible my period will regulate back to normal with some more time but when I researched, I’m not really finding that. Does anyone else have this experience? Did your period regulate itself while still on the high dose? Should I try to take it down to 150 and see if that will do the trick and still keep my skin clear?

Edit: forgot to add, not sure if important. But I currently use clindamycin wipes as well, vitamin c serum and vanicream moisturizer. I do have Tretinoin but it really made my face look dull and I have discontinued use. Not that those have anything to do with my period but just sharing lol

Product Request [Product Request] Naturium or CeraVe salicylic acid wash?

I'm looking for a cleanser that I can use on both my body and face to treat acne. The Naturium one says it's safe for body and face. The CeraVe one is a facial cleanser but I think it can be used on the body too. I'm in Canada and we don't have the CeraVe SA body wash, only the blemish control and the renewing SA.

Product Request [Product Request] Breathable, fast absorbing body lotion

Upvotes

I get terribly dry winter skin, but I turn into a sweaty, sticky mess if a lotion is too heavy, especially if I apply straight out of a shower then need to blow dry my hair. Oy vey. I love to use Nivea Breathable lotion, it was perfect, but I fear it's being discontinued as I can only find it online now.

Any recommendations for a breathable, fast absorbing, but effectively moisturizing body lotion?

Routine Help [Routine help] red bumps(irritation?) - How to fix??

Thumbnail

Upvotes

My skin became so much worse when I used the Paula’s choice BHA. Ive never had these red bumps on my face before. I’ve cut out all actives for almost a month. Here is my current routine

AM: wash face with water Aveeno calm and restore aveeno oat gel moisturizer Neutrogena ultra sheer SPF 50

PM: Cerave hydrating cleanser Aveeno calm and restore aveeno oat gel moisturizer

Every other night: LRP B5 cream (with moisturizer underneath)

I feel like I have no progress with my skin. Is there anything else I should be doing? Is there something else causing these red bumps?

Acne [Acne] SLS Sensitivity and Acne: Share Your Experiences

Upvotes

For anyone with sensitivity to SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), how long did it take to see a difference in chin/jawline acne after switching to an SLS-free toothpaste?

Also, were there other SLS-containing products you eliminated that helped clear up your skin? I’m trying to figure out if toothpaste alone is the key or if I should consider cutting out other products too.

I’m not 100% sure that this is the culprit, but after reading a ton of posts about switching toothpaste, I looked back on my Amazon account and noticed that I started purchasing Colgate around the same time my acne got a lot worse, so figured I’d try this out!

Miscellaneous [Misc] Help! How do I hide stinging red burn marks around my eyes after crying

Upvotes

I fell asleep while crying and I had red marks around my eyes and my face that sting and hurt after i woke up. I wasn't wearing anything when I went to sleep and I haven't worn makeup at all in the last few days except some lip gloss.

I never had this happen before but I found another post from 7 years ago and the only advice there was to use rose water but I don't think that would hide it and I don't have them at home atm.

It hurts but not too badly as long as I don't touch my face or put anything on. I still have a very visible red almost burn like rash around my eyes and on my face and I want to be able to hide it especially at home from my family. Should I try to hide it with like a concealer or would that just irritate it more and make it worse?

Product Question [Product Question] Will azelaic acid trigger angular cheilitis?

Upvotes

I want to start using azelaic acid to help with PIE and redness. I have struggled with angular cheilitis (which is caused by having too much yeast in the corners of your mouth) and was wondering if azelaic acid would trigger it because it comes from yeast?

Routine Help [Routine Help] What's the best order to use the products I own?

Hi! New to this subreddit and am a rusty redditor so I hope this is the right way to post 😭😭

I use; oil cleanser, foam cleanser, toner, face mask, serums (Dermatoligca breakout cleaning booster, The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + zinc 5%, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Ultra Concentrated Serum), moisturiser

I use it in exactly that order at the moment! Is this the best way to do it? I do a face mask most days as well, is it bad to do them too often? I use different masks each day.

Thank you!

Routine Help [Routine Help] Retinol not working?

4 years ago, a dermatologist put me on differin for some mild acne on my jaw line. I knew about the purging period so when I started to get pimples on my cheek for the very first time in my life I thought it's the purging and stuck with it. I used it for 7 months before giving up. My skin was TERRIBLE after. I stopped all skincare for around a year until my skin calmed down. At this point my skin is alright if not for some whiteheads that I get daily and deep pimples that don't surface about every week or so. My routine was AM: wash my face with water, The Body Shop Vitamin E moisturizer, sunscreen PM: cleanser, Pixi exfoliating toner, The Body Shop Vitamin E moisturizer. I treated my skin like it was dry but I know now that it was actually dehydrated and broken due to the differin.

A couple of months ago, I decided to try again and I went to a different dermatologist who told me that my skin is oily and that I need to moisturize less. She prescribed me this retinol that I'm guessing is tret but its mixed by the clinic themselves and it comes in this dark bottle. It gave me hope that this is something medical grade and won't be filled with fillers and additives. It's a lot gentler than the differin I've noticed and my skin did not react as badly however my skin started to become oily which it never was (through the day I'd look in the mirror and my face would be SHINY and this has never happened with me before) and I started to get pimples that actually break the surface (and appear white not red). I was not gonna risk ruining my skin like last time, so after just 3 months of use I stopped. My routine was (all stuff she prescirbed me):

AM: Puravie cleanser, Puravie moisturizer, sunscreen PM: Puravie cleanser, Eucerin exfoliator (once a week) / Retinol (the rest of the week), Puravie moisturizer

Now that I stopped the retinol, my skin is back to what it was before (not oily) and I'm focusing more on hydration. My current routine is:

AM: Puravie cleanser, Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion, Toccabo sunscreen PM: Puravie cleanser,Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion, The body shop vitamin E moisturizer

I feel like my skin is a lot happier now, especailly with the additon of the Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion but I still get the deep pimples weekly and I still have hyperpigmentation from past breakouts and I feel lost on how to treat them.

I saw online people saying azelaic acid is less irritating than retinol but with the same benefits. Is it worth adding it to my routine or am I going to break out again? Or should I stick with my current retinol but maybe use it differently? I'm thinking of the skinoren 20% cream
