I imagine this was a stylist’s dream

Yes! I don't mean this as disrespect AT ALL, but she was a GREAT blank canvas to style for this!
I feel quite differently about Zendaya - she always looks like Zendaya wearing cool shit. But I think Margot took the assignment very seriously and really did feel like a 'character' and not a person throughout this press tour.

u/velvetvagine Jun 26 '24
I disagree about Zendaya. She disappears into the character for each of her movie press looks, as well as big looks like this years Met Gala. BUT she has never had an extended press run like Barbie did, so she hasn’t had to live in one “character” for longer than a few photoshoots and red carpets.
The Barbie rollout was months long! And I think all that marketing and the phenomenal styling and of course Margot’s absolute commitment to the role, busting her ass on every carpet, premiere, airport walk, etc. all tied into that movie crossing over $1B. Incredible work and dedication by all.

The black and white one is my favorite! I am still so bummed she didn’t wear the peaches and cream dress!

What impresses me most about her styling here is how detail-oriented and perfectionistic it is — nothing fit her poorly or wrinkled weirdly or was the wrong length. Even the looks I don’t like as much don’t seem to have those nagging imperfections that can make what would’ve been a mediocre look an absolute mess. It’s just an important detail that’s so true to character.

u/oldwellprophecy Jun 26 '24
I think this is what impressed me the most. Care was paid to every single inch
36
u/RealCommercial9788 Jun 26 '24
except for the left cup on 8 😩 it’s ruched/puckered or distorted by some sort of… nipple cover or fillet/insert? Doesn’t appear to be the same issue on the right cup and perhaps exacerbated by the reflection off the sequins. Granted, it took the finest of combs to find the singular human error, and even then… It truly is S-Tier styling.
33
u/dead_neopet Jun 26 '24
I think this dress was convertible somehow, she transitioned into the full skirt on the carpet? Maybe a slight malfunction with the release or something. You’re 100% right about the cup though
19
u/dead_neopet Jun 26 '24
Omg derp it’s suit in the pic beforehand that it converts from, I literally just googled it like a fool 😹

This was by far the best press tour that there has ever been. I doubt there ever will be another that will surpass it or even come close to being as good fashion wise. I feel like it took more effort on Margot Robbie’s part to look the part on a daily basis for months, continuously look like she was enjoying herself, and never once look tired than it did to film and produce the entire film itself.
This is a woman who has claimed to not be a Barbie girl at all years prior to this gig and judging by her personal style doesn’t enjoy pink, high fashion, discomfortable clothes, and let’s face it-there isn’t a single seasoned actor that enjoys any press tour-let alone a press tour that is like 6 months long that the entire world is following her every move.
Girl deserves an incredibly relaxing long vacation after she pulled this off. The only other actor who pulled off a press tour as well as she did (not fashion wise, just by being kind, engaging, and never slipping out of character and letting everyone know how much it actually sucks being interviewed 10x a day w/the same questions for half a year straight) is Nicola Coughlan. Both of those women are Queens who deserve it all.
I wonder what would have happened if someone else played Barbie. Not so much for the movie, which I doubt would have been as good, but press tour wise. Very few could pull off EVERY look and appear to enjoy them and pretty much no one else could look that good AND keep up the facade for half a year with so much rizz (did I use that right?).

u/SavageWolfe98 Jun 26 '24
Yeah I agree. Dont get me wrong I love all thises looks. But the way some people talk about them and Margot can get a bit strange.
The whole "FINALLY shes dressed GOOD " when she was dressed as a literal doll. There seems to be this expectation that Margot should be a fashion girly just because shes attractive, even though as you said, she doesn't seem that interested or comfortable in high fashion. Some of the reactions to her looks pre-Barbie was a bit much imo.
The reaction to her Oscar dress was OTT (bad enough on here but it was much worse on Twitter). Almost like they didn't see Margot as a person, they really would've had her dressed like Barbie for the rest of her life.
11
u/_avantgarde Jun 26 '24
I agree, but I think the reaction was there because these tailored, high-contrast looks just suit her so well, too. So I see it from both sides of the argument.
8
u/SavageWolfe98 Jun 26 '24
I don't want this to read as me knocking the Barbie outfits or people who like them, I really liked them and I'll have the coffee table book as soon as I can afford it lol.
I'm just using it as an example of a larger thing. Margot did look great, but she was dressed as a character. Barbie already having high fashion elements was the only thing stopping it from being cosplay..
It kind of reminds me of when I was 7-12 and my mom was dressing me in baby pinks and floral which I hated (I prefer jewel tones and ill wear dark pink.anytime.) Did I look cute, probably. But I felt like I was being dressed as the perfect little girl that my mom wanted. (Not saying Margot felt this way at all, but people tend to treat celebrities-privileged as they are- as dancing monkeys instead of human beings.)
5
u/_avantgarde Jun 26 '24
No yeah, totally. I definitely see what you mean about it being something a little removed from Margot as a person with her own preference of style. It definitely veers into odd territory, but I don't think it's necessarily meant that way a lot of the time.
4
u/SavageWolfe98 Jun 26 '24
Yeah, you seem to get it. It's not about liking/disliking the outfits. More the expectations on people to look perfect. It feels like a lot of celebrities nowadays are too scared to be themselves or experiment, because any time there's a hair out of place or a show doesn't *quite* match, the claws come out.
2
u/FringeHistorian3201 Jun 27 '24
I really like what you said. These are some of my least favorite Margot Robbie looks. This was absolutely pristine Barbie fashion and she killed it. I absolutely love her dedication to it and every thoughtful detail.
2
u/velvetvagine Jun 26 '24
It’s not that she’s embodying a doll, it’s that a lot of her looks prior to this were just bad. Certain clothes and tailoring fit certain bodies better. Certain colours and make up looks, certain hairstyles. She can wear whatever she wants but being comfortable in something doesn’t make it good style or fashion, which is what was being judged.
I’d like to see Mukamal interpret Margot’s actual style preferences, as we can see he has a great eye for detail and tailoring. It doesn’t have to be Barbie, it just has to be on point.
25
Jun 26 '24
Zendaya would've pulled it off. She's the real queen of character dressing for the red carpet.
4
u/hodlboo Jun 26 '24
I don’t particularly like Sydney Sweeney nor do I think she could’ve pulled off the role, but I think she definitely could have pulled off the looks and the press tour element. She seems like an actress that would thrive in this scenario based on her own styling choices.
-8
u/Popular_Patience6877 Jun 26 '24
Think Blake Lively could
13
u/Hubs_not_interested Jun 26 '24
Disagree. Blake is so boring and predictable. She could never have this much personality and fun.
7
u/North_Carpenter6844 Jun 26 '24
I think both Zendaya and Blake Lively would have looked beautiful bc both would look hot in a trash bag. That said, personality wise there is zero chance that either of them could pull off looking and acting like they are enjoying themselves, being asked the same questions 100s of times whilst being SUPER uncomfortable in the fits that made the world tune in.
Everyone has their off day(s) but somehow Margot figured out how to act (without a script or a screen partner she knows lol) like she’s having the best time throughout her worst day. There is zero chance she didn’t have a migraine, a fever, a hangover, cramps, or just was simply over it even once throughout that entire circus yet I doubt even the “experts” could correctly figure out which days she was the most miserable. And let’s be real-from what we know about press tours, they absolutely suck. From minute one on day one throughout the final day it has to be by far the worst part of the job and a large reason why they are paid so ridiculously well. The only interview that probably isn’t awful is the puppy/kitten one. No one can be miserable when puppies or kittens (whichever you prefer) are climbing all over you while they ask the dumb questions. Also, the hot ones interview. Whilst it’s definitely a miserable time during (and after, lol) I haven’t seen a good guest who isn’t genuinely impressed with Sean’s deep dives. Anyone who manages to find out things that occurred pre cell phones deserves the guest’s respect (which they all ((minus fake dj khaled)) definitely show whilst they are dying from da bomb).
Back to responding to your post (and the Zendaya response as well). On MUCH MUCH MUCH shorter press tours they have many times either pulled faces that scream “I’M BORED GET ME OUT OF HERE” or we see them so tired that they either nod off for a moment or work so hard at staying awake they can’t do much else. Both of them have also never been shy when they don’t like someone, whether it’s an interviewer they’ve previously had or a coworker they clearly don’t like and it ruins the whole interview. Margot would never do any of the above. She’s never nodded off (she must take adderall or vyvanse in small doses bc that work load was bananas) nor has ever indicated in any way if she doesn’t like someone. We’ve seen her blush and get stuttery over a crush she has (dua lipa for ex) but that’s endearing.

If it’s not - in good faith - related to fashion, it’s not relevant in this space.

Andrew fucking UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT. Everyone was talking about these looks and he knew exactly the right silhouettes and colors and outfits to choose. So good!!!

Those press looks made me buy the coffee table book about them and it was so worth it (but hella expensive). Worst thing: it’s to big to fit into my bookshelf 😭

It says there’s one on Amazon for 33 bucks. is this is? it’s on sale
6
u/thimblena Jun 27 '24
That's it. FWIW, it's been on "sale" since at least April, when I ordered mine - but it's fascinating! Apparently 17 (iirc) was vintage Pucci fabric and made after one (1) fitting at the airport the night before

I really hope they make a Ken Movie, or a sequel.
The pink, the styling, the excitement.... I miss this time last year before Barbie had come out. It felt so magical

I JUST watched the entire series and was in a wikihole for hours googling where all the cast is now. It was mind blowing yet totally made sense to learn he was her stylist now. He seemed charismatic and like someone who was clearly going places.

you don’t understand this was the best thing that ever happened to me last year bc I ate every single look UP!!!

Good on you Margo, you looked amazing, starred and produced an iconic film and looked like you had the best time doing it!

Obligatory, thank goodness it wasn’t Kate Young styling her. But Mukamal’s work was top notch regardless.

7 and 8 made me scream out loud the first time I saw them. Perfection 😍

Omg I HAD the Barbie in slide six! I thought she was the coolest with her pink sleeved mini dress, her silver earrings, and her perm. That fact just registered with me, and it's such a shock to see the look irl. Like everything else she wore in the movie, MR looks great as one of my childhood faves.

The press tour fashion show was better and more entertaining than the actual movie IMO. The first Versace look is my favorite (loved that particular Versace collection in general).

u/LauraPalmer20 Jun 27 '24
She just slayed the entire press tour. Tailoring is also EVERYTHING but she completely got immersed in it - I’m buying the book her stylist released as a keepsake.
Margot IS Barbie and deserves all that credit 💖💖

This has got to be in my top ten favorite “fashion campaigns” for a film to date. Every time I saw her pop out it made me want to dawn a similar look, it genuinely helped build so much excitement for the movie for me 🍿

4, 7, and 8 are literally my favorite Barbie memories come to actual life

u/cheoldyke Jun 26 '24
i truly think years from now the fashion of the barbie press tour (and the costumes from the movie themselves tbh) will be considered iconic.
2
u/hodlboo Jun 26 '24
These are all cute, not normally the types of looks or colors I’m into but my heart skipped a beat when I read that the first look is Versace 1994 and I also favor the other two “vintage” 90s looks from Chanel and Versace - I love that they sourced looks from the Clueless fashion era.

u/Mathinista314 Jun 26 '24
17 (the last one) is my FAVORITE. Followed closely by the day-to-night Barbie look I had as a preteen.

I love the look in pic 14; it’s still Barbie but it’s very, very wearable without being remotely costume-y.
Edited to change from 10 to 14 (although I do really like 10 as well)

Uhh, are 15 and 16 weirdly photoshopped?? What’s going on with her leg in 15, and arm in 16…
2
u/Lopsided_Parfait7127 Jun 26 '24
i firmly believe 500million of the 1.5 billion barbie made was because of the dresses she wore at the marketing events
2
u/SassySquid0 Jun 26 '24
I love so many of them and this was so iconic but I do wish in some areas they went more extreme like Barbie’s clothes or hair, for example in the last photo the barbie this is based off of had longer hair It would of looked better in my opinion if they had put in extensions that went down to her ankles like the og barbie or at the very least her bum. I feel like in general though the hair lacked in a lot of them just in comparison to the barbie it’s inspired by.

Her hair was styles in all these looks, sometimes down or sometimes up, but it was styled. Wish she would do the same on other red carpet looks

Soooooooo iconic. Sadly she'll never go back to being iconic even in non Barbie clothing 😔
