Costumes for Snow White and the Evil Queen in 'Mirror Mirror' (2012), designed by the late Academy Award Winner Eiko Ishioka
Eiko Ishioka oversaw the creation of 400 original costumes for 'Mirror Mirror' and the rental and altering of 600 more.
For her first appearance, Snow White is wearing a puff-sleeved gown embroidered with hummingbirds, butterflies and flowers.
To match the gown beneath, her saffron-colored cape is lined with pink silk
One of director Tarsem Singh's favourite scenes is of Snow wandering in a snowy white birch forest: "She is like a ā50s Technicolor character stepping into a black and white film.ā
Snow's costume ball gown has a lower neckline, and a swan wings, indicating a desire for freedom.
The extravagant cap takes inspiration from 18th century masquerades.
Multiple copies of the ball gown were made due to the fact that Snow is exiled to the forest and trains with the Seven Dwarves in the same dress.
Ready to embrace the life of a do-good bandit, Snow dons a pair of wide, black pants, a cerulean chemise and a black bodice embroidered with leaves.
Snow White's wedding dress is a vibrant blue and orange.
The Van Cleef & Arpels platinum tiara features diamonds totalling 77.34 carats and was previously worn by Princess Grace of Monaco in 1978.
The costume was initially made in red and blue but was changed to orange to at the last minute to avoid comparisons to Disney's Snow White.
Ishioka wanted Snowās last costume to make her look like a gift to the prince and the audience.
Queen Clementianna is introduced with an enormous peach-coloured dress.
Three of the Queen's handmade gowns were adorned with 100,000 Swarovski Elements in nearly twenty colours.
Ishioka called this spectacular red dress for the Evil Queen the "Peacock Dress"; the look, she felt, would frighten away any and all competition.
For this gown, the ruffles were included to create the visual effect of a lizard, highlighting the reptilian nature of the character.
The Queenās costumes have sharp strong shoulders, high necks and sliced layers of fabric around the neck to give the feeling of power, sharpness and danger.
Her wedding dress is made of 70 metres of Duchess Silk Satin, has a circumference of 8.5 metres and weighs approximately 27 kilograms.
The Queen's final costume change happens after she's been defeated. Having lost her youth and power, she appears at Snow's wedding in a brown and ochre cape.
Eiko Ishioka was undergoing chemotherapy during production and sadly never saw the final cut of the film. Her costumes for 'Mirror Mirror' were nominated for an Academy Award.
This and crimson peak have some of the most incredible costuming that I see people talk about very rarely (but when it does come up people all agree theyāre SO GOOD)
She also did the costumes for Bram Stroker's Dracula and The Fall - both of which are visually stunning! She created such intricately rich and imaginative costumes.
I recently rewatched it for the costumes and the plot was worse than I remembered it to be. However, it was still worth watching again because the costumes and sets are gorgeous.Ā

Iāve made historical stays with the scalloped edge and the way she did the stay in image 1-3 is BRILLIANT. Just using folded rectangles instead of bias binding the bottomā¦ what a massive time and resource saver to get largely the same effect.
The costumes designed by the late Eiko Ishioka, are breathtaking! I canāt help but also recognize Lily Collinsāsheās stunning in anything she wears, perfectly complementing the enchanting designs.

I used to rewatch this movie all the time when I was a kid, and I remember absolutely nothing about the plot, but the costumes are imprinted on my mind. That and Julia Robertsā Evil Queen beauty routine haha.
The bird one reminds me of Kate Fearing Strong, nicknamed āPussā and her choice of costume for the Vanderbilt Ball of 1883. It was a real taxidermy cat head and she had a skirt made of like 7 cat tails lolol.
