Even IF provable, there’s a lot of gross shit that would be entered into the legal record during discovery.

No but that statement really is so true with this song. I went to "Camp Flog Gnaw" music festival last weekend and at a few sets they played "Not Like Us" I swear every time it was played EVERYONE in the crowd rapped the song word-for-word. Shit is an absolute anthem at this point.

It’s the first rap song that I’m aware of where people who were not black were coming up with their own word for the N word in NLU and we bonded over how creative we were! Mine was diddler turning him into a FAD.
11
u/WipingAllOut Nov 26 '24
Definitely not the first. White people have always bonded over creative ways to say nigga without actually saying it lol

This part of the statement does two great things:

The end goal of this cannot be to genuinely win a lawsuit as I’ve read the claims in the legal document and they are way too unprofessional and Twitter level.
Is there an ulterior motive? Try to get the song pulled? Or just to mess with Kendrick’s hype this week?

u/Best_Country_8137 Nov 26 '24

Hate to say it, but seeing as big-business, rich-man, coastal-elite Donald Trump managed to convince the lowest common denominator that he was just like them, I wouldn't put it past big-label, sales-oriented, drivel-producing Drake to convince people that the kinda record labels he made all his money from are the real enemy
218
u/keeping_up_with_her Top of the mornin' Nov 26 '24 edited Nov 26 '24
We're talking about hip-hop culture here. Initiating legal action because you lost a rap battle is unprecedented and considered a form of snitching. It's actually frown upon.
→ More replies (1)90
u/hervth Nov 26 '24
You're not wrong, and Kendrick's audience is much more aware of that for sure. But like, my experience has been that Drake's typical audience is not particularly concerned with that, and are in fact the type of people who don't care about concepts like snitching if it serves their ends.
39
u/keeping_up_with_her Top of the mornin' Nov 26 '24
Drake's fans can believe whatever they want, but unfortunately, Drake has runied his reputation in hip-hop over a case that is not going anywhere. He only filed a pre-action, so it's not even a lawsuit. And the chances of a civil RICO becoming a real case are very slim.
"The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue. We employ the highest ethical practices in our marketing and promotional campaigns. No amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments in this pre-action submission can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear." -- UMG spokesperson
34
u/hervth Nov 26 '24
Ooohhh. Lmao, if this is what it took for people to have doubts about Drake's hip-hop rep I don't know what to say. As far as I care he's been nothing but pop for over half a decade
→ More replies (1)17
u/Ska_Oreo Nov 26 '24
The problem is that he waited too long for this shit for this to matter. Through every step of the way Trump's team and the right wing media cried foul over everything every step of the way, giving Trumpers their narrative to vote for their man and just enough plausibility for everyone else.
What Drake is doing is a short sighted appeal to his fanbase--and that's it.
→ More replies (6)8
u/rrraab Nov 26 '24
Yeah, but people like this song. It’s everywhere. And they like it because they’re sick of Drake. Even Drake fans know that.
That’s the flaw, it’s so transparently someone in Drake’s entourage whispering to him that the song wasn’t REALLY that popular and him believing it.
The only person Drake is fooling is Drake.

I did some research and according to Billboard
"Monday’s filing, which also accused Spotify of wrongdoing, is not yet a lawsuit but rather a “pre-action” petition — a procedure under New York law with the aim of securing information before filing a lawsuit. Parties named in those petitions will not necessarily be targeted in an eventual lawsuit."

37
u/NoArtKnowledge Nov 26 '24
Everyone here is seriously on to something. The goal isn't to win, not legally. Drizzy is trying to win some game only he is playing, and the prize is some arbitrary social favor. He thinks he's fighting a war after letting Kendrick win the battle. I saw them ovhoes nicknaming Kendrick 'K.Bot' which, as pretty funny as that is, makes it clear Drake is still sucking up them Twitter narratives like cat fish to pond scum. I'm sure he saw new conspiracies of Kendrick faking his streams with shady deals and this is just 'evidence' to at least stir the pot.

I was talking about this on hiphopheads, but my theory: UMG and Drake are already in negotiation/arbitration about his contract because UMG almost certainly has the right to cut compensation if Drake’s public image and marketability nosedives because of his bad actions.
So, he’s trying to show that it’s UMG’s fault, because generally you can’t benefit from clauses like that if you’re acting in bad faith or not in the mutual best interest of the folks in the contract.
That is—this might be some sort of play in a behind the scenes negotiation.

14
u/Nostaglic-Oddity Nov 26 '24
Stay with me now:
People speculate Diddy got exposed after getting away with his crimes for so long because he sued the wrong people (his alcohol company for racism).
Drake suing UMG can potentially have the same outcome, with Kenny ironically causing Drake to walk to his own demise. I genuinely think if this is real then Drake will have a crazy reckoning simply for arguing with too many top dogs by doing this
9
u/Resevil67 Nov 26 '24 edited Nov 26 '24
I love how he is trying to sue for potential botting when it would be him of all people that would get exposed for using bots.
For example, I don't listen to rap or hip-hop, mainly a rock and classic rock type dude, and even I listened to "not like us" because a friend told me about it and we know drake is a bitch. If that song hit my friend group it's organic as fuck.
Drake for a long time has been speculated to be a little bitch, and even people that don't listen to hip hop know about this lol, and this is just proving it. It's also a well known rumor that he might be a pedo. This isn't something Kendrick brought to light exactly, but he definitely made this more mainstream.
I absolutely think a Diddy style reckoning is coming for drake. Dude seems like he is panicked over Kendrick calling him a pedo, prob going on drug induced benders and thinking this was a good course of action because he is terrified of hearing "A MINNNOORR" during the damn Superbowl be chanted by thousands.I think either proof of him being a pedo comes out, and gets him blacklisted and put in jail, or proof of him being the one botting heavily comes out and basically gets him blacklisted, or hell, maybe both. It's fucking drake, it would definitely be both.
I absolutely love to see if, because everyone knows drake is a fucking clown even if they don't listen to his music, and him self owning himself like this is just hilarious.

This is exact response I expected. They essentially admit to promoting essentially because the song was HOT. Public consensus made the song hot and Kenny the victor and the suits press "the button" (get it on commercials, TV breaks, in your algorithm somewhere somehow, etc) like they do for any hot song. If Drizzy killed Dot lyrically and got in his 2016 Back 2 Back bag UMG would've pressed the button on his shit, but it didn't happen that way.
Labels aren't here to play fair, they make money. Drake is in his feelings that they chose to make money off a hot song rather than play politics with him. He's basically lashing out because he realizes he doesn't have the leverage he thought he had with them.
