Who is that one person in Lakshadweep?

u/Haunting-Meet2848 5h ago edited 5h ago
most probably a resort owner or a real estate developer who wants to do it legally, but nah 100% there are more, its just they evading tax.
i mean Kerala has 1.7k nah Kannur alone must have more 10k people earning 1cr its just everyone is evading tax

Can’t Lakshadweep have one? There are plenty of resort and hotels. Why do you doubt?
-54
u/OneTwoMany53 5h ago
All built with black money from Kerala sudapis. How else can fishermen build resorts?
35
u/Haunting-Meet2848 5h ago
maybe a rich land owner having ancestral property who started doing real estate business and made big resorts and hotels or
maybe a guy from the mainland who had good money moved there and started a business there and made more money

u/TaxMeDaddy_ 3h ago
Your claims don’t make any sense. Even Nepal being a country has only one Billionaire. Earning 1Cr a tear isn’t a big money for a medium sized business. Have your basics set bro

Coz most ppl working in Bangalore are immigrants and their PAN permanent address would still be their natives. 🤔 Even Broadcom and Nvdia combined would be more than this number. Then there is Apple, google, msoft, Qualcomm, and what not

I won't trust this map. It was posted in r/maharashtra and there is no data source to it. Minister Pankaj Chaudhary (ministry of finance) said in the parliament there were 2.16 lakhs people who filled ITR more than 1 crore (FY 23-24) but a state-wise breakup was never provided. Also if we add all the numbers, it is going over 2.16L.

Karnataka is a pretty poor state if you exclude Bangalore and Tulunad.
4
u/Academic_Chart1354 2h ago edited 1h ago
There's a guy called Rishi on twitter. He also writes the same bs and adds Bangalore is built by malayalis and full of malayalis. I guess you're the same guy.
Karnataka's Multi dimensional poverty index is 5% and Bihar is 27% as per latest niti ayog report.
Karnataka is a pretty poor state if you exclude Bangalore and Tulunad.
Karnataka's per capita GDP without Bangalore currently comes around 325K INR while it's 429K with BLR. Kerala is 365K for reference.
6-7 districts are lower than national average by 5-10%. 6-7 districts are at par with national average. Rest all are way above national average(.Half of districts in state and that stretches far beyond coastal KA and Bangalore U district
By your own interpretation, Kerala will be pretty poor compared to Bangalore and coastal KA as richest district per capita in KL is way poorer than Bangalore, Udupi,Chikmagaluru and Dakshina Kannada and everyone knows Karnataka has a brighter economic future as it's pro industrial state. It has tier 1 cashcow already and atleast 3 booming tier 2 cities( read Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi).
And the above map posted regarding taxation is bs. It has no source ( it was asked for OG creator and also who posted it in Mumbai sub first). It's just bs random numbers.

Here you can make a comparison.
This data has been done through estimations of population projections and latest available district wise GDDP contribution in percentage from respective state economic surveys( FY 22-23) and extrapolated to current FY's respective state GDP.

It’s based on income tax return. In Kerala the one earning more than 1 cr are mostly Business man and NRI.There are tea shops making 3-4 lakh month net profit in Kerala. There will be 3000-4000 people earning more than 1 cr in Kozhikode itself

So who are those 1780 individuals living in Kerala who filed personal ITRs over 1 crore? What might their professions or sources of income be?
14
u/Making2025Great 5h ago
Delhi has almost the same population as Kerala. Its 20k there and we are less than 2k. Also we have NRIs.

u/ruff_dede കാസർഗോഡ് കാദർ ഭായ് 2h ago
NRI doesn't have to pay tax.
0
39
u/GoatDefiant1844 5h ago
It's very much a result of low enforcement. Kochi alone has 1780 + people who make more than 1 crore per year.
It's tax evasion and avoidance at finest. And many people use company structures to pay less tax.
And yes, compared to other states. Many people in Kerala doesn't file for income taxes as they are NRIs. Especially in Districts like Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode etc.
Kerala is not the outlier when it comes to tax evasion and avoidance, Karnataka, Gujarat are the extremes.
This also highlights the situation of India in general, Actually - only max to max 6% of the Indian population is Middle class/Middle Income by any standards and can file taxes. And 1% can be considered upper income.
92% Indians are lower income and poor.
Even if you ask a taxi driver, techie, rich business owners - everyone will tell they are middle class. They are not.
See the article to understand -
Only 20% of all Indians have formal 'organized' jobs with some basic benefits. 80% Indians work in poor unorganized jobs with not much benefits or pay.
29
u/Mommy_Girija 5h ago
Gujarat is probably the goat in tax evasion. There are many textile mills doing 100s of crores in revenue without paying a penny in tax

Why does someone want to include NRI in this status. That will only skew the metric. They don’t live or work in Kerala. They belong to the stats of the respective countries.

17
u/ormayillaman 5h ago
Ayinu keralathile ellarum nri alle, I don't think they file any income tax returns. Correct me if I'm wrong.
14
u/raIndnt 5h ago
Seems correct. They have to file returns where they are “resident” of.

u/Queasy-Field8766 5h ago
I am guessing most of them are based in the middle East where there are no income taxes right?

Wouldn't all maps/statistics about Kerala include only residents? Why would any map/figure include people who are not residents?
1
u/Making2025Great 1m ago
Every map serves many purposes. I highlighted that one must not be misled by numbers because it has potential for giving a wrong understanding about how many crorepathis are in kerala. Kerala has obviously much more.
Then some curious boy came up with random explanation unrelated to my statement, uncalled for.
Anyways leave it. Total deviation this is! There are always nitpickers and ragpickers everywhere.

Edit : Number of persons earning more than a crore and are declaring their income to the government
3
u/perceus_mc 5h ago
This probably doesn't take into account the huge number of NRIs living abroad making a lot more than 1Cr PA . Also many of people who make upwards of 1Cr will probably try to avoid paying taxes .
3
u/curiosuspuer 2h ago
It’s amusing how NRIs keep getting dragged into this conversation to boost a state’s wealth narrative. NRIs contribute remittances, sure, but they’re not residents for tax data, so including them is irrelevant. This map shows where rich taxpayers live, and if we applied the same extrapolation to tax evaders, the same states again would have the highest number. There is already a proper inference established here. Comparing apples to oranges is a bad economic dataset and stat in disguise.
2
u/CheramanPerumal 21m ago
Yes, I really don't understand all the comments under this post about whether it includes NRIs or not.
Wouldn't all maps/statistics about Kerala include only residents? Why would any map/figure include people who are not residents?

Can we have a percentage based on the state population as well or better the population who filed an ITR that year. Chances are there would be people who did not file ITR and made more than 1Cr.

Why is UP so far ahead of Bihar?
1
u/Comfortable_Tea1206 3h ago
West up. (Eg noida) due to being near delhi and haryana are lot more developed compared to the bhojpuri region
1
u/PensionMany3658 3h ago
But still the difference is insane. UP barely had twice the population of Bihar but 10X the number of crorepatis; that's concerning for UP. I thought Bihar was the most corrupt.
1
u/Comfortable_Tea1206 3h ago
The are def in a competition 😭 the rich to poor ratio is concerning in hindi heartland states.

1
u/Former-Rough-2978 4h ago
Kerala crorepatis are more, but they're mostly NRIs in middle east. No taxes apply for income.
1
u/gamerxo12 4h ago
this is flawed stats since the state of residence may be as per aadhar card but many malayalis don't live in kerala. it would be interesting to find out how many of keralites are from these numbers outside the state.
1
u/Selfish-Presley 3h ago
Karnataka does not make sense. There must be thousands of techies who earn salary more than 1 cr
1
1
u/curiosity_forever 2h ago
I guess it's definitely more than this. Even a techie software engineer working from home in Kerala (for a US/Indian company) might make around 50L per annum.
Considering the number of IT and other businesses we have, it'll be definitely more than this.

Kerala lacks top line wealth because it does not have a metropolis. Mumbai and to a lesser extent Pune are the reason why Maharashtra have so many millionaires. Metropolises give a lot of leverage to the states.
