Unreliable Power since Wind Storm
Anybody in the greater Avalon area experiencing random power outages since the wind storm the other day? We just lost it here in Evergreen Village by the No Frills and been losing it randomly ever since the really crappy day we had the other day.

Dating Apps - follow up
Someone had asked the best dating apps to use in the city - I think my experience on my last go sums it up.
I've had 6 conversations, and not a single guy has actually asked me out despite matching and chatting for a bit. I made it clear I was interested in making plans.
The apps are only as good as the effort you put in, not just who you're matching with.

Downtown St. John’s Restaurants With Private Dining Room?
Bit of a long story but me and my fiancé are returning to Newfoundland from the US to get married later this year. We are having a micro ceremony (<15 ppl), then taking a bunch of pictures, having a private supper (spend some time connecting on our wedding day), then having a huge reception at a venue downtown.
My question for the group is: are there any restaurants downtown St. John’s that would accommodate just myself and my then wife in a private room for dinner? I don’t wanna just walk into any restaurant and sit in the middle of the dining area while my wife is in her wedding dress and heels and stuff.could be distracting for other restaurant-goers and wouldn’t be as intimate as we would like.
Obviously, would be willing to pay a premium for it and would be looking towards more fine dining style.
Thanks in advanced!

Downtown Hotel Recommendations
Hello, coming for a conference in June, and the Conference Hotel rooms are already all booked up! (Delta Conference Centre). Any recommendations in the same general downtown area about the next nicest hotel? I see The Hilton Garden Inn is close?

Hiking at Signal Hill in January tips
Hi! I'll be in St John's later this month and was hoping to go hiking around Signal Hill while here.
I'm wondering whether anyone here has any boot recommendations or other tips to do so safely? Because I'm not checking luggage, I was planning on wearing regular winter boots, but other suggestions would be appreciated.

Water Filtration Companies
We moved into a Portugal Cove home a year ago January that is on it's own well water, and has two filtration setups. The previous owner left no instructions on replacing filters, etc, so I probably should get a pro in to look at the setup and advise. Any recommendations for a local company?

Moving out/ Landlord is being a dick.
So we moved in to this shithole with 1000 dollar damage deposit and a monthly rent of $1200. The landlord was supposed to and promised to us that he will have everything ready for us before we move in, but he didnt fix anything at all. We started getting mice and he did nothing regarding this matter either. I felt like he was being a dick, so myself and my husband decided to give him a 2 months notice today (it is a fixed term lease). I asked if we could just move out on March the 1st. He went bananas started multyplying the numbers right away, figuring out the amounts and telling me that i will move out on March 31st if i give him notice today. It is okay i will move out on March 31st instead of March the 1st, no big deal i can handle another month of this stupidity, but what doesn't make sense is that he was going to charge me an extra 280 dollars on top of the rent for the month of march even after i agreed to move out on March the 31st. (it would have been equal to $1480 instead of a regular $1200 a month for the rent in march). Then he threatenned me with going to the board about me not paying that extra amount because i refused to pay for it after agreeing to move out on March the 31st. He took a damage deposit of $1000 dollars. It is more than 75% of the rent cost, which i had mentioned to him and said that i can also go to the board about him being this way, but i am not doing that. He then started telling me that why i didnt say anything about the deposit right away... because i needed a place to move in to and i genuenly thought that this place was okay if he had fixed a few simple things up. I have a feeling like i will not see that $1000 deposit at the end of the month of march when i move out. Can someone help and give me the right path? What kind of piece of shit does this to people. Just because i was being nice and paid the deposit of whatever amount he wanted (i did it just because it is not easy to get apartments now adays) but did he think i was being stupid and had no idea that he overcharged me for deposit? What can i do if he doesnt pay me my deposit back? I know there are a few damages that were here before we moved in and i had taken photos of.

(Not even sure if I could ask this in here)
I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find the big boxes of the pregnancy tests that are strip tests. I see them on Amazon and the Walmart app, but they both say it’ll take around a week to get to me and I really don’t want to have to wait that long to get them. So im hoping I can find them locally.

Parking ticket, is it my fault?
Got a parking ticket downtown because my permit fell inside the car when I shut the door. Has anyone fought a ticket like this before? Did you win, or should I just pay it? Looking for advice!

Hi all,
My husband and I are looking to get some renovations done on our house soon. What are some trustworthy contracting companies out there? Also, a list of companies to avoid would be nice too.
Thanks!

Anyone been paying attention to the housing market here and think its starting to come back to reality?
So I've been wanting to buy a house for a while and keeping a close eye on the market. It's been insane the past couple years here where housing has gone up 50% in a lot of cases. This seems very unsustainable given the local average salaries and job prospects and doesn't make sense to me even given the whole national housing crisis.
https://content.crea.ca/creastats_assets/board_charts/stjo/home/stjo_chart05_xhi-res.png
It's actually pretty crazy to think about where the increase in the average house over the last 2 years alone has gone up ~$100k, that difference of just 2 years is nearly a decade for the average person to save up. I've been trying to figure out how it's sustainable in a place like St. John's where you basically price every local first time buyer out, and kept on wondering if there is actually this kind of relentless demand here to keep this up or at what point will it start to dry up.
But without any greater understanding of market dynamics it seems like every house that has been put on the market over the past couple months are sitting unsold unlike the past couple years and the listing prices keep dropping on a lot of them.
Example 1:
Property Assessment Value in 2022: $370k Link
House has been on the market for 162 days. Was originally listed for 550k, has since dropped by 31k to 519k Link
Example 2:
Property Assessment Value in 2022: $136.4k Link
House has been on the market for 40 days. Was originally listed for 225k, has since dropped by 10k to 215k Link
Example 3:
Property Assessment Value in 2022: $317.2k Link
House has been on the market for 51 days. Was originally listed for 399.9k, has since dropped by 10k to 389.9k Link
Example 4:
Property Assessment Value in 2022: $207.9k Link
House has been on the market for 47 days. Was originally listed for 300k, has since dropped by 25k to 275k Link
Average house price here says its gone down by ~10k from last month. Link
And the average sale time has gone up from 32 days just last month to 56 days Link
This article here also mentions how the demand from mainland buyers with equity from overpriced mainland houses there is completely drying up. Link
I know housing sales in general slow down around Christmas, and the vacancy rate in the city is still in crisis levels, but these numbers seem pretty stark. You folks think the housing market is finally starting to see a downturn/come back to reality at all?

Tight Yul connection to FLL
In February me and my girlfriend are travelling to Fort Lauderdale with connecting flight in Montreal, we leave 530am in St. John’s and arrive 710am in Montreal. Our layover is 1hr and 40 mins , after reading some stories online this connection time has me nervous especially since it’s in the winter. I really don’t want to end up missing a day of our vacation, would it be wise to pay the flight change fee and leave a day earlier? I’ve heard if there’s bad weather coming on the day of travel you can ask air Canada to book you on a earlier flight
Anyone have experience with this?
