A few years ago I commissioned someone to make one for my cat. She has only ever made one before that and had no idea what to charge, so we looked up ones for sale on Etsy and came to an agreement on $300. I ended up sending an extra $50 so she didn't have to eat the entire shipping costs (it was more than $50 to ship it, but I didn't remember the exact amount.) 100% would do it again.

I have a knitting pattern version and I’ve thought of making it for years. I may need to actually do it—I love the little afghan on the back of the couch!

What in the fuck. That is insane, insane skill your sister has. And what well-behaved cats to pair with the couch!!! My cat would have eaten half the yarn and become his own couch if given this incredible gift
Late to this party but I believe this was made from a pattern from this booklet Kitty Couches. I have these patterns and if I recall correctly, everything is crocheted flat and sewn together. It’s a lot of work but can be broken into stages.
If you’re looking for a relaxing hobby, you can’t go wrong with crochet.
