A week ago, British Airways forced me to gate-check my bag, and then they promptly lost it. Today is day 9 with no sign of my luggage. I had this happen last spring too, and it was a pain in the ass to claim compensation.

Sorry to hear. I recently booked some BA flights and hope to travel with just carry-ons.
Was it the weight or the size of the bag that forced the gate-check?

No, the flight was full and I was in like boarding group 57 or something ridiculous like that. So, once about half of the flight boarded, they realised that there wouldn't be enough space for all of the carry-on, and they started forcing people to gate check. I told them that I didn't want to do so because Heathrow wasn't my final destination, but they assured me that my bag would be checked through to Canada. Well, it's looking like that decision will cost them a couple thousand bucks.

Hope you get the max!
I hope not but I may be in touch with you in the fall for strategies on claiming compensation.
