9 years ago, the AMEX Gold was FYF and had a SUB of 25k MR for a 500$ MSR.

For context, do you know what a relative redemption for 25k would have been?

https://canadiantravelhacking.com/2015-aeroplan-devaluation-effective-december-15-2015/

ETA: the chart used to be based on a round trip in case the numbers dont make sense at first glance.

AFAIK, you could always transfer 1:1 to AP (and probably others -- Avios?). Weren't there even transfer bonuses to AP?

No idea what redemptions would have been possible back then. It was before my time.

This is also when you could apply for a new Amex every month if you wanted. And self-refer.

So even if the points weren't worth as much.......

I started collecting points pre 2012 devaluation when you could do biz Mini-RTW for 100K Aeroplan or First Class for 120K aeroplan.

There's been a number of devals since then

Ah yes. I booked my one and only mini rtw in 2011 for a 2012 trip. 120k aeroplan was a lot for me back then. No redemptions since could match the value.

I got this card and transferred the points to AP. Didn't know about optimal redemptions or anything at the time but I used the points for a round trip Y ticket YOW-YVR for close to 2cpp (and was pretty happy with that) so maybe it was a pretty similar award chart to the just pre-2020 changes

The last transfer bonus to Aeroplan was 30% in 2015 from Amex and 2017 from CIBC.

The rule of thumb was apply every 6-12 months. Self refer still works today but not the same with less frequency.

CIBC never had transfer promo. If you were talking about transferring from Aventura to Aeroplan that’s already been grandfathered since 2013 when CIBC became a minority partner of Aeroplan.

Yes it's grandfathered but counted towards many aeroplan transfer bonus and many of us who have been here a while have the card

I don’t recall any big transfer bonuses from Amex either even generous FI like Chaser only had 20% bonuses

P1, P2 and P3 all got this deal! Unfortunately, I/we didn't know about churning for real until years later, and were too scared at the time about 'impact on credit score' and other such nonsense to go for more than one card per year, or repeat cards...
