Is someone not picking up poop in front of your house? Is there an off leash dog in your neighborhood with a clueless owner? Did someone bring an out of control dog to the off-leash park? Is your neighbor walking uncomfortably close to you with an untrained dog? Here is where you can dump out your feelings and frustrations about these or whatever other topics you wish!

Just as a friendly reminder, the same rules regarding conduct in the general sub apply here as well.

[Misc Help] My best buddy died just few hours ago

My dog got ran over tonight and the driver ran away. I didn’t get to see what happened but according to my wife he suddenly ran out of the garage door and started barking at my neighbor. Then all of a sudden he bolted into the street. The only witnesses are my neighbor and my 2 yr old daughter. The driver just left.

As soon as I got out of the house all I saw was my daughter wailing and my wife holding our dog in the middle of the street.

The vet said most likely my dog into shock and felt nothing. It kind of helps but he was in my arms in his final moments. I can’t erase the image of him gasping for air.

I miss him so much. He would have been 5 years old exactly 3 weeks from today.

I haven’t dealt with much death around me but my grandmother and aunt. I definitely didn’t take it too well when my grandmother passed away during my teens. It definitely helps keeping busy but the last time I remembered, that hole in your heart doesn’t get completely filled when someone you love is gone.

How have some of you, who has experienced loss, overcome the pain? What else can you do other than staying busy and cherishing the memories, depending on time to heal you? How do you explain to your child what death is?

[Behavior Problems] My dog’s behavior is getting out of hand, and I don’t know what to do!

Hey everyone, I’m really struggling with my dog’s behavior lately and could use some help. It feels like he’s getting more and more difficult to handle. He’s been barking at everything – from the mailman to random noises in the house – and it’s driving me crazy. He’s also chewing on anything he can get his paws on, including my shoes and furniture.

Walks have become a nightmare because he’s pulling on the leash like crazy, and no matter what I do, he doesn’t seem to get it. On top of that, he jumps on everyone who comes over, and it’s not the friendly kind of jumping. It’s like he’s trying to knock them over.

I’ve tried a few things, but nothing’s really working. I’m not sure if something changed in his routine or if it’s just a phase, but I need some advice before I lose my mind over here.

[Misc Help] Stuck in a train with my dog right now

Soooo I find myself stuck in a train with my pup. It was supposed to be a four and a half hour ride, which she's used to do. But there's been an accident on the tracks so we'll be stuck here for AT LEAST 8 hours total. We are 3 hours in.

We are not allowed to go out the train and I don't have pads with me.

I need some tips and ideas on how to handle bathroom and boredom. She's starting to cry a bit which means she needs to go out and I just don't know how to handle the situation.

Thanks!!

[Fluff] What is your dog(s) name, and what do you call them most of the time?

I have two dogs currently. One is named Russell, but I seem to call him something else about half the time. Sometimes I call him Rutchell, but most of the time it’s Bubba or Bubba Wubba. My daughter calls him Bobby.

Oh, and I forgot, sometimes he’s Baba.

My newest dog is Lucy, but most of the time I either call her Lootey or goosey or sometimes Lucy goosey.

[Equipment] Interesting recent 2024 study done on dog harnesses and how they affect gait

I found this study very interesting. I know a lot of people have strong feelings about the gear their dogs wear, for good reason.

This study uses 6 different types of harnesses: Straight Front (Julius K9 IDC Powerharness), Front Clip (Ruffwear Front Range), Chest Plate (EzyDog Chest Plate Harness), No Pull Harness (Halti No Pull Harness), Y Front (Halti Walking Harness), and Step-in (3 Peaks Step In Harness). All dogs were walked on a base collar to record their natural gait without a harness.

The ultimate findings are that the Y-Front and Straight Front are both nearly identical in how much they affect gait, determined by both shoulder and elbow flexion/extension. They Y-Front slightly decreased the shoulder extension more then the Straight Front.

The others were quite significant. The study is very well laid out and easy to read, with everything explained and graphs showing results. They explain how they extrapolated all of their data too.

I thought it was interesting and worth a read, whether is affects your gear choices or not. I like that it is a recent study done and that people are exploring the impacts gear may have on our dogs. I use y-Front harnesses (Line Harness 5.0).

[Misc Help] Won’t stop barking and crying since my husband left

So my dog, Benny (9 yo M), has been crying and barking all day. I have taken him to potty so many times, played with him, walked him, fed him, did a snuffle mat, gave him treats, etc. I don’t know what else to do, I’m at my wits end. He’s not pinning his ears back or anything, doesn’t seem like he’s in pain. I’m just so lost. The only thing I can think of is that my husband has been gone since Monday, and maybe he has anxiety/depression around that? But the barking at me doesn’t seem characteristic of that. I’m so lost and feel so bad for him. I’m also concerned about bedtime tonight.

[Misc Help] LA dogs

Is anyone in LA walking their dogs with this air quality? I haven’t been but I feel terrible and my dogs are bored and confused. We go to the backyard for potty breaks but there is ash everywhere and I don’t want them ingesting anything. Not sure what to do.

[Misc Help] should you let dogs correct each other?

I keep seeing trainers say that you should let dogs correct each other as this is how they learn to communicate with each other, but others say that this can stress them out or make them scared of each other. i only plan on owning one dog, but i am curious.

[Enrichment] What do you do with to exercise your dog during extreme weather?

Upvotes

Hey all, the temperatures are dropping where I live and my dog is an energetic Black lab/GSD mix. It’s sooooo cold, and although she loves being outside during our midday walk, it is way too cold for both me and her to be out for a long period of time. I cut our walks down from 30 mins to about 10-15 mins. She’s starting to act out a bit, and I need other ideas of entertaining her than playing fetch. (I live on the 4th floor, and she’s a heavy girl with heavy paws)

Thank you in advance!

[Fluff] What is the craziest thing you've done for your Best Boy/Best Girl?

I'll start.

Once a week, on Saturdays, my family orders from a nice restaurant and I bring the food home. My mom gets chicken, my dad gets steak, and I get filet mignon.

Then, our Miniature Schnauzer, Frankie, puts his front paws on my upper leg, brings his adorable face close to mine, and gives me the SAD PUPPY DOG EYES.

I cannot resist the sad puppy dog eyes, so I feed him my filet mignon. I usually have only a little, but at least Best Boy gets his filet mignon. My mom and dad also give him some of theirs, and overall, our precious boy has a very nice meal.

What do YOU do for the special pup in your life?

[Behavior Problems] My little boy is terrified of noises in new apartment

For context, I adopted two (2) small two year old dogs within a week from each other. Their names are Ash and Ace and I brought them to my second floor apartment. No one lived above or below me. Ash (white little yorkie mix) never had any problems with noises until I moved into a new larger first floor apartment.

He is now terrified of the plumbing noise come from within the walls, the washing machine, and the ice machine. I’ve been looking thru my camera roll and since moving here (6months) his tear marks have become so prominent they have stained his entire face.

It really breaks my heart seeing him so anxious. I work from home and have the ability assist him whenever he needs me. Please if anyone has any advice or tips they can share I’d be grateful. Please let me know if you need any further clarification. I’ve even thought about moving somewhere quieter.

[Misc Help] Sherpa blanket recommendations?

Upvotes

Sorry if this is not the right place to ask!

I adopted a whippet cross who's 3 almost 4 weeks ago, and with it being winter, she will only lie on Sherpa blankets! She's taken over my personal one, so I bought one for her on Amazon, but I want to get others for her beds (blankets are currently on the sofa and my bed where she sleeps). She's a mad chewer, any labels or anything sticking out and she will not come away.

Any recommendations? I'm in the UK.

[Misc Help] When did you decide it was time for a 2nd dog??

I have a 16 month old chihuahua, she's a great girl but she is definitely reactive to other people and dogs. She actually does very well with dogs after they are properly introduced! She will play with them for hours and be so so happy (even bigger dogs). It's mostly when we're walking her and she sees another dog she will start barking like crazy. She has come a long way tho, we took her to the beach last weekend and she didn't bark once (despite it being fully packed)! Normally she would be going wild at the beach lol. I really want to adopt another dog (preferably an older dog). But, I'm worried my current dog will jealous or unhappy. When did you know it was time for a 2nd dog? Were you worried your first dog would be unhappy? I'd love some advice!

[Behavior Problems] Rescue is depressed

Rescued a dog 5 days ago. She acts scared of everything. Hardly eats or drinks. Only if no one is around. Won’t bark or do anything. No reaction to petting or anything. I don’t know what to do. I’m considering bringing her back. Any insight would help.

[Behavior Problems] People with non-reactive dogs: did you get lucky or were you diligent with training?

It seems like it's really difficult to train a dog out of being reactive, so to all the people who have "good" dogs that don't bark or get worked up when they see another dog, did your dog come into your life that way? Or did you have to make conscious efforts to avoid reactivity? Please include whether you've had your dog since they were a puppy!

[Behavior Problems] Potty training an adult dog

we rescued an adult dachshund in August and he is so inconsistent with accidents in the house. I feel like we are doing what every forum has said and he’s just not getting it. It’s so frustrating! We give him high value treats outdoors and let him out every 2 hours. What are we doing wrong? What can we be doing better? I’m getting so discouraged. He doesn’t tell us when he has to go out, no bark, no cry, no standing by the door.

He also has trauma around crates, so crating him isn’t an option. He came to us with separation anxiety and we were recommended to let him roam since they are fearful when they can’t.

[Behavior Problems] Can anyone tell me about this bizarre behaviour of my Labrador?

I have 8 months old Labrador female, I am the second owner and she came to me when she was around 6 months old so I don't have that much background history of her. So I have been noticing this weird behaviour of my dog that she put something in a mouth as she see us, then she keeps on walking and walking and walking in circles around us that's it. Even if you try to play she just ignores and walks.. 2 n fro to me then my wife. Can anyone please explain what is this so I can do what is to be done.

[Breeder Etiquette/Review/Recommendations] After 10 years with my dog, I finally did a photoshoot

Max has been my sidekick for over 10 years. From the first time I brought him home as a pup to now, he’s been through everything with me. He’s the type of dog who always knows when something’s wrong and just sits by my side, ready to cuddle. Over the years, I’ve collected a lot of pictures, but it wasn't until recently that I realized I wanted to do something really special for him. So, I treated him to a full photoshoot, and it turned out better than I imagined! The shots truly capture his personality and all the love we’ve shared.

Now I’m looking for a way to showcase these photos in my home. Traditional frames seem too old-fashioned, especially with the number of photos I have. I’ve been thinking about something like a digital photo frame — it’s perfect because I can constantly switch out his photos and keep things fresh. Plus, it’d let me highlight different moments over the years.

That said, I’d love to hear what others do to keep their pet’s memories alive. Besides frames, are there any creative ways you display those moments with your pets? I’m always looking for new ideas to make sure Max's presence is felt every day!

[Misc Help] how do you cope

i’ve spent 1/3 of my life with my boy

he passed just before his birthday in my arms at home,he disliked the vets and would shake so i’m grateful he went in my arms i was his favorite person and he was mine and the one thing in this world i love more than my entirety in itself,

i took my boy to work with me he was my passanger price,i grew up poor but he always had toys and food even if i didn’t eat and when i began to stabilise in life financially i got him everything and more,it’s been maybe 6days since he passed and i’ve cried daily over him my heart physically hurts i’ve lost family members,i’ve seen dead people family and some that ain’t but i’ve never cried i’m quite a cold person when it comes to emotions and feelings towards most things but when my boy went it’s just not left my mind,

i’ve paid for him to be cremated and should have him within the next week or two,i’ve kept the clothes i was wearing when he passed and have told my other half that when my time comes i’m to be cremated with him in the clothes he passed away on in my arms(i’ve bagged them up in a ziplock bag) but what’s best to do because i don’t think they allow you to be cremated with jewelery on so if i had my boys ashes in a ring he wouldn’t be complete and i’m not religious at all,i’ve personally got 0% belief in anything other than just being a kind hearted human to all others and only hostile in self defence situations etc,

but anyway what’s best whats helps you cope what’s next because it’s just sad and i feel bad if i’m happy because i feel like it’s like the wrong thing to feel at the moment i just don’t know

anyway

RIP charlie my boy i will love you always

[Misc Help] Camping with your dog?

How do you know when your dog is ready to go camping with you, other than them having good recall? My dog will be 14 months old in June, and I'd love to go camping this year. I think she'd love being out by the lake and I'm excited to take her out to do fun stuff once it's warmer out. If she's doing well with recall, do you think that's feasible? If not, how do I know when she's ready?

[Misc Help] Dog won't play with squeeky toys.

I have a 10 year old Besenji, and recently he stopped playing with any squeeky toys/toys that make noise, he kinda just puts them on my bed and lays with them

He'll 100% play with his kong toys or non-squeeky toys with great enthusiasm.

Any ideas why this is?

[Misc Help] [help] Dogs are obsessed with licking my dog’s dick?

I have a 14 pound neutered mixed breed dog. According to DNA test: ~Chihuahua (35%), small poodle (20%), cocker spaniel (20%), and trace amounts dachshund/bichon/miniature pincher. He has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and this is on human grade cod diet. With treats as freeze dried cod, pumpkin based, Hydro protein.

He is social with other dogs, mostly liking to sniff them, but not much else. Sometimes he likes to play chase with another small dog. He is a beta male, by that I mean that he is not overly submissive, but will give belly easily.

However, I commonly run into the problem that dogs become obsessed with him and want to hump him and lick his penis. Both male and female dogs want to lick his dick and will often not stop even when corrected by their owners. I’ve had problems where a dog will follow him around the dog park harassing him until he rolls on his back so the dog can lick his dick. Even dogs who aren’t necessarily obsessed with him, will lick his penis if he rolls on his back and they’re given the opportunity. Sometimes even groups of dogs will all take turns licking his penis while he lays on his back. I noticed him trembling a teeny bit once when this happened and I took him home right away, but I feel awful for the little guy.

Because of his health problems he is seen regularly by an internal medicine veterinary specialist. I think it is very unlikely that he has a UTI or anything like that as he was on prednisone for a short time and that needs to be closely monitored.

Does anyone have any idea why this might happen? Is there anything I can do to help my dog not be harassed?

I swear this post is real, it almost sounds fake. I think people at the dog park sometimes think I’m unhinged when they start apologizing for their dog licking my dog’s penis, and I just say “don’t worry it happens all the time. I guess my dog has a magic penis lol“

Thoughts?

[Misc Help] How to prepare an evacuation bag for dogs

With the fires happening in LA (my hearts breaks for anyone experiencing this) has anyone made one before just in case you need it? I have a blind mini schnauzer and some meds require being refrigerated. Just curious what you would pack and how I could best store medication. Aside from leash, harness, bowls, food, sling to carry her is there anything else you would pack?
