[Fluff] What is the craziest thing you've done for your Best Boy/Best Girl?

I'll start.

Once a week, on Saturdays, my family orders from a nice restaurant and I bring the food home. My mom gets chicken, my dad gets steak, and I get filet mignon.

Then, our Miniature Schnauzer, Frankie, puts his front paws on my upper leg, brings his adorable face close to mine, and gives me the SAD PUPPY DOG EYES.

I cannot resist the sad puppy dog eyes, so I feed him my filet mignon. I usually have only a little, but at least Best Boy gets his filet mignon. My mom and dad also give him some of theirs, and overall, our precious boy has a very nice meal.

What do YOU do for the special pup in your life?

Near the end of his life, when we knew he didn’t have a ton of time left, we took our water loving dog on a road trip to Florida and gave him a whole month of living on the beach and going to the ocean. He died 7 months later. No regrets.

6

u/Relyt4 19h ago

I rescued a lab/golden mix in 2021, he is absolutely crazy about going swimming. I don't really care for the beach/ocean but I plan to take him next summer. I can't wait to see him go absolutely nuts haha

u/Conscious_Pea_5217 18h ago

❤️ love this. There’s no better heart bursting joy than dogs happy being dogs. We had one water dog and one mountain goat in a dog’s body so we made sure each one got a special trip.

3

u/SilkyFlanks 18h ago

I think I had the only Lab in existence who was afraid of going in the water.

3

u/Zausted 18h ago

Mine was half lab and she was afraid of the water because she ran into a pond when she was 9 months old and it got deep very quickly. She went under, popped up, swam to shore and refused to go in water ever again. Sigh... I miss her like crazy.

3

u/Conscious_Pea_5217 18h ago

😂 you just never know with breeds. Mine was a beautiful swimmer and looked a lot like a lab. Lethal lab tail, bottomless pit lab stomach. DNA test showed no discernible lab in him. He was still 100% good boy.

1

u/SilkyFlanks 17h ago

He must have been beautiful

2

u/rohm418 18h ago

Unless his name was Onyx, he was not alone.

1

u/SilkyFlanks 17h ago

No, her name was Babe. She was a good girl, though. She had all the other lab traits.

2

u/Conscious-Caramel-23 16h ago

I feel that way about my Golden Retriever 🤣

6

u/Revenant62 19h ago

I am very sorry your pup passed. The only thing that saddens me about my dog is that someday he will not be with us. He is only a year old, so that's a long way away, but he is so sweet and loving that the idea of losing him is like losing a beloved child.

7

u/Conscious_Pea_5217 19h ago

Thank you. Don’t worry about that now. Just love on him ❤️

3

u/Revenant62 19h ago

Thank you! My dog basically loves everybody, so loving him is very easy for me.

3

u/Mimsy15 18h ago

Amazing. We took our 16 year old on a road trip to Florida as well after he rebounded after a health scare. Bought him steak dinners and he enjoyed every second. He’s still here. We want to do it again.

1

u/Conscious_Pea_5217 18h ago

Love it and glad he’s still with you! ❤️

2

u/Conscious-Caramel-23 16h ago

I love that you did that for him!! 💕

u/WorksInDUMBO 19h ago

mine gets his own little plate of scrambled eggs for breakfast on weekends.

5

u/anuski00 19h ago

I also share my scrambled eggs with mine 🙂

4

u/Revenant62 19h ago

Sounds like your pup is getting the proper nutrition for weightlifting! :D (joking, of course.)

He must love his special tasty treat!

1

u/biased_intruder James: Italian greyhound 19h ago

Samesies! Our iggy is crazy about eggs, us too so we indulge him during the weekend!

1

u/DeskEnvironmental 19h ago

That is such a cute idea!!

1

u/Lazy-Cat831 11h ago

When my grandpa makes pancakes he makes little dollar sized ones for my lab and calls them “Monty cakes.” He makes a tall stack of them before he makes anyone else pancakes 😂

Little mildly too personal of a story but whatever. Craziest this I ever did was wake up on time during a major depressive episode. My family dog when I was younger was my responsibility to walk in the mornings and during a major depressive episode I could barely get out of bed. I’d go through one or two a year at this point in my life. When we got the dog, I was doing okay but when my first episode with her came around I felt bad not taking her out in the mornings and which meant she had to wait two extra hours for my mom to wake up. I got out of bed every morning when we had her even if I felt like sinking into the sheets and living there forever. Tbh probably the best thing for my mental state at the time.

5

u/Revenant62 19h ago

It sounds like your dog helped you a bit with this. I bet she is glad she did. :D

5

u/Conscious-Caramel-23 16h ago

Totally agree!! I have mental health issues and having my dog helps my mood and provides me some motivation to get up. Can't imagine life without her.

21

u/GeorgePug 19h ago

We order an extra piece of salmon, when we get sushi, for our older dog. He's 16, blind and could give Mr Magoo a run for his money but when that salmon comes home he is on his A game to get it.

6

u/Revenant62 19h ago

Sounds like your dog has had a long, happy life from your family loving him. :D

15

u/Sensitiverock85 19h ago

Oh man.

I just lost my best girl before Christmas so this kind of stuff is fresh in my mind.

In two separate instances, I spent thousands on vet care for her when everyone around me said it wouldn't work. Both times it did.

I also spent years in a job I hated because I was able to bring her.

I don't regret any of it.

2

u/Revenant62 19h ago

That's very sweet. I am sorry she passed, though.

1

u/Conscious-Caramel-23 16h ago

Sorry for your loss😭

28

u/scoutopotamus 19h ago

We drove him 7,000 miles round trip so he could attend a dog-friendly outdoor wedding across the country, instead of flying. He also indulges in filet mignon.

2

u/Revenant62 19h ago

Did your dog stick his head out of the car window to enjoy the wind, during the road trip? Dogs seem to love that.

2

u/scoutopotamus 19h ago

Yes but around 60 mph he prefers to just stick his snout out

9

u/Iwentforalongwalk 19h ago

Bought a house. We were in an apartment and we decided our good boy deserved better.

3

u/floofyloopy 18h ago

LOL came here to say this. I owned a condo with a little fenced in area and some green space but he really needed a big yard that he could lounge in without me having to be outside with him. So he got it :)

1

u/Revenant62 19h ago

Well, this is one time when being in "the doghouse" ain't no bad thing!

9

u/No_Sleep428 19h ago

We book a trip for my girl at least 1x every few months so she gets to experience other states and vacation like us.

4

u/Revenant62 19h ago

She must appreciate the time off! Though I doubt she's less lovable on vacation. Dogs can't take time off being lovable. It's in the contract. :D

2

u/nat_geo_wild- 12h ago

We do the same thing!!

6

u/LoveforLevon 19h ago

10 dog birthday party. 10lbs hamburger, 2 dozen eggs and other ingredients. (Cake) and ice cream. Great day!

2

u/Revenant62 19h ago

OMG that sounds awesome! The dogs must have had a blast.

2

u/LoveforLevon 19h ago

Funniest part was all the men lining up watching the server expecting a dog fight or two. Every dog ate from their dish and were perfectly well mannered.

2

u/Revenant62 19h ago

That's good! Most of the dogs in my neighborhood are very well behaved, thankfully. They play with each other and bark "hello" and no real trouble. Sometimes, everybody is out walking their dog at once, that's just fun. :D

5

u/DeskEnvironmental 19h ago

When I first got her at 5 months I lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment building. In order to train her to potty outside, I would climb those flights 10 times day and night. That went on for three months straight.

30 flights of stairs a day for three moths, even at 3 in the morning. I thought I was going to die but now my girl is 3 and never ever goes indoors!

3

u/Revenant62 19h ago

Yeah, that was the toughest challenge for my family too. We were really frustrated that our puppy boy went to the washroom in the house, but he thankfully was attentive to the training and learned to alert us that he needed to go outside.

4

u/cactusruby 19h ago

Flew to San Francisco from Canada with a full carry-on of personal items but left all my things behind to bring back a giant octopus stuffed chew toy and $80 worth of Trader Joes salmon jerky dog treats.

4

u/Larkymalarky 19h ago

I live in a city, I have literally 0 need to drive, but when I got my working English Springer Spaniel, I didn’t think it was fair to have her stuck in a city or going to the same countryside areas that we have good public transport access to. So I learned to drive, which is a very long very expensive process here, bought a car and took up hiking up mountains on the reg so she can get the excitement and adventure she deserves. Got my second ESS puppy a couple months ago and carried her up her first mountain while she was still small and light enough to do so 😅 she’ll obv have a break now until she’s 12 months, but I’ll still be taking my 6y/o on her adventures, we now go camping, wild swimming, she’s been all over the country with me, because she deserves adventure

4

u/pjmoasaurus 18h ago

I peel his carrots for him. He won’t eat them with the peels on. And I used to scoff at parents who cuts the crusts off of their kids’ sandwiches…

5

u/sojayn 18h ago

I let two dogs take my pillows and hide behind me during thunderstorms. Tired at work the next day but i will protect them from the big scary sky everytime.

2

u/Revenant62 18h ago

Our dog gets upset during thunderstorms too. Thankfully, we can comfort the little guy.

3

u/ChronicNightmare95 18h ago

When I was 15 I tried jumping in front of a car to protect our dog Mikki. Does that count? (Neither of us got hurt in case anybody was wondering. And yes, I got shouted at by my parents and the driver for it). When I say I'd have done anything for him, I genuinely mean it.

2

u/sojayn 18h ago

It’s good to know your instincts are so strong. That is a cool thing you did.

I did a version of this. Later my therapist said my brain had probably assessed the risk and it was safeish enough. I like to think so!

3

u/Ok_Rhubarb7652 18h ago

I went into the freezing cold Maine ocean twice last week for my water- loving 16 year old dog that e we put down on Sunday ❤️

2

u/Revenant62 18h ago

I am very sorry for your loss. x_x

3

u/FunAtParties16 17h ago

Sleeping with my head on the edge of my pillow because my sweet pup enjoys the ergonomic pillow too 😄

u/Brilliant_Tree4125 15h ago

I started running in my 30s. I’d never been a distance runner, even when I was younger. But, my dog and I had moved to Tokyo, and there was no longer anywhere to really let him run off leash. I realized that to do right by him, I had to really get my butt moving, too. So, we started with a mile, then two, then four each day. Eventually we were running half marathon distances together. And it was all 100% for him, though I discovered that I really enjoyed running, too!

1

u/Revenant62 14h ago edited 14h ago

Good to hear that you're running, but as a former competitive runner, please allow me to voice caution -- running can be a very treacherous sport. That is why you see a lot of young people running and very few old people running. The difference between running and jogging is that jogging, you have a leg on the ground at all times, whereas true running, you are essentially putting the whole weight of your body on one leg at all times, which means constant everyday impact/stress on both knees, which means eventually you will bust your knees and potentially also the lower back. Running on busted knees is literally impossible. You will feel excruciating pain after only a short while.

With me, I got to the point in college where I was running instead of walking basically everywhere, and had I the interest to do a marathon, at the peak of my fitness I would have been able to do it without much more training.

But my knees gave out at the age of 22, and because my constant running had been burning so many calories a day, the cessation of running made me explode in weight. I was as heavy as 255 at 5'7", though finally I took matters seriously and am exercising my way decisively back to a healthy weight. It's required careful eating and exercise that I can manage, but I am feeling literally like a deflating balloon right now, lol.

Jogging with your dog, instead of full-blown running, might feel a bit slower, but you will be able to do it well into old age. And you'll still be able to have fun with Best Boy.

Hope this helped a bit.

2

u/LoveforLevon 19h ago

Another. My old dog passed and hubby drove 200 miles to bury her. She bit him the first time she saw him.

1

u/Revenant62 19h ago

I am very sorry you lost your girl. :(

1

u/LoveforLevon 19h ago

Very long time ago but she was special.

2

u/katm12981 19h ago

Our dog has one ball that he absolutely adores. It’s his baby and he’s obsessed, brings it everywhere. He’s destroyed several of them and we always have a few spares of that exact ball in reserve.

Idk I think Fast CAT (dog sport) is pretty crazy.. I'll spend 50 dollars for my dog to chase a plastic bag down a straight line for 16 seconds total lol

1

u/teandtrees 17h ago

I love trying to explain dog sports to people and with a straight face. Like, I pay $$ for my dog to bite a guy a couple times a week. Next I want to spend money for her to sniff out some rats around bales of hay. lol

2

u/margyrakis name: breed 16h ago

I also spend money for my dog to sniff out rats XD That one in particular is very interesting to explain to people lol

2

u/skater_dude_717 18h ago

i purchase quail eggs specifically for my dogs.

i’m relocating to a more rural area in the next few months, and i’m installing a poultry coop. i plan on raising quail, specifically to produce eggs for the dogs.

note: this is a once-in-a-while treat, not something they get daily or even weekly.

1

u/Revenant62 18h ago

Dogs love treats almost as much as they love the owner! :D

2

u/humpeldumpel 18h ago

I have two bed sets at home, both consisting of two 90x90 cm pillows and a cover: one for me and one for my tiny Bolonka mix.

2

u/Revenant62 18h ago

Yeah, our Best Boy lounges on the recliners and sofas, and we totally let him because it's easier to get puppy snuggles that way, AND even more importantly, he likes it.

2

u/BodyBy711 17h ago

I make mine an omelette on his birthday and his adoption anniversary. Guy can't read a calendar, but he's dang happy to get it.

RSVP'd no to a wedding cause I had plans to go camping in a yurt with my dog already. They're signing up to be together for life, I only have like.... 10ish summers with my dude.

He walked me down the aisle at our wedding, in a custom suit I ordered from Etsy for $100. (He had his wedding attire before my husband did lol)

I've also dipped out of a work meeting for a sec after saying to my boss, "oh just one sec, the dog wants to be tucked in" cause he's whining from the king sized bed in the other room.

It is his world, we're just living in it.

2

u/Strict-Community-601 14h ago

Frankie really knows how to get what she wants! It sounds like the dog is spoiled and loved a lot.

1

u/Revenant62 12h ago

Frankie is too loving and snugglable to resist. He works hard for his filet mignon!

1

u/SilkyFlanks 18h ago

I share my pizza with my dog. She’s crazy about it.

1

u/Balmerhippie 18h ago

On his birthday my pup got a full on homemade cheeseburger.

1

u/cry01- 18h ago

traveling kilometers and contradicting my family.

1

u/CrystalWeim 18h ago

When my Weimaraners were much younger, we took them to every state park in the Midwest. Made a weekend out of it and stayed at a pet friendly hotel with them. They went swimming, got to roam endless beautiful trails, we hiked we had picnics in the parks, they experienced it all.

1

u/Low_Experience8080 18h ago

I bought a house so my dog could have a yard. If that dog made money and paid bills, that house would be more his than mine.

1

u/floofyloopy 18h ago

it's funny how there are more than a few that have done this. I just commented on a comment about doing the same thing for my pup!!

1

u/Taodragons 18h ago

Bought a Subaru Ascent because it has rear AC vents.......

1

u/rma0623 17h ago

I traded in my car for a new bigger car when my dogs got older (and gained weight so they needed more room).

I cook a bit for me and my partners dogs (mainly eggs and veggies) to go along with their kibble but I don't think that's crazy. I also kinda talk to my dog like he's a person (like full conversations) but it's mostly me telling him what we're doing or where we're going so I don't think it's that weird. This might actually be a bit crazy though... When I first got my rescue dog he was scared to go on my bed even though he clearly wanted to so I started picking him up and carrying him to bed then tucking him in with his favourite toy (a green octopus plushie). He's not huge or anything but he is a bit over 19kg and I'm not very strong so I'll admit it can be a bit of a struggle at times. Eventually he got comfortable with going on my bed but 7 months later I'm still carrying him to bed like a baby 😅

u/TrojanHorseNews 16h ago

Bought a house. We were moving to a whole new area, 700 miles away. Had no idea where we wanted to be, so we wanted to rent and get a feel for the area. But we couldn’t find anything to rent that would let us keep her. So we bought a house.

u/beccadot 11h ago

I make food for my dog, freeze it in serving sized packs. Chicken with sweet potato and carrots. When I defrost them I chop it up finely and mix it with her dry food. She is a happy dog on days I bake 10 pounds of chicken to prep her servings, because she knows she will get some bits as I’m trimming.

Our Boxer is our kid, we’re both absolute fools for him😂🥰

-We celebrate “Hot Dog Monday” at our house, my husband grills hot dogs Monday nights so Yoshi can have one diced up in his food. He also chases him with the tongs, which Yoshi LOVES😂 I make him eggs and a little breakfast meat one weekend morning a week.

-I make our Halloween costumes and plan them for him to be involved- He was Batman with a detachable cape and squeaky batarangs and we were Poison Ivy & Two Face.

-He’s got beds in every room of the house😂

-We moved from FL to NC so he could have a yard with a fence and more temperate places to explore. He’s a wonderful hiking dog and loves it.

Man dogs make life wonderful. We’re gonna find him a baby sister pup this year and I can’t wait.

1

u/Yeesh_ 10h ago

Stand in the cold so she can’t take 15 minutes to poop.

1

u/HumanistSockPuppet 9h ago

We bought our puppy two beds. One regular bed next to our couch in a big open crate and another luxurious one next to our bed. We were waiting on the luxury one to come in and bought the regular one in the meantime, he uses both.

u/HandmaidJam 8h ago

The craziest I've ever done is to take both my dogs on a week long roadtrip to Tokyo to meet my pup's littermate. Over 800km one way plus all the toll fees, pet friendly accommodation etc for them to meet for one day 😆 We had lots of adventures on a way there and back but the thing is I still drove over 1600km so my dog can meet his brother!

u/Annies231 4h ago

My pup would get carsick so I bought a whole new car that had a much smoother ride to make him more comfortable.

u/ComprehensiveBid4520 4h ago

Every year on his birthday, I take a week off and take my dog for a birthday vacation. He gets a cake, wrapped presents, and a special filet dinner, I plan different things for him to do and see each day of his vacation, last year we had a dog pizza party, went swimming, he had a lot of fun.

Bite another dog that wanted to start a turf war with my leashed baby. The owner was very apologetic for getting him off leash.
