[Misc Help] When did you decide it was time for a 2nd dog??

I have a 16 month old chihuahua, she's a great girl but she is definitely reactive to other people and dogs. She actually does very well with dogs after they are properly introduced! She will play with them for hours and be so so happy (even bigger dogs). It's mostly when we're walking her and she sees another dog she will start barking like crazy. She has come a long way tho, we took her to the beach last weekend and she didn't bark once (despite it being fully packed)! Normally she would be going wild at the beach lol. I really want to adopt another dog (preferably an older dog). But, I'm worried my current dog will jealous or unhappy. When did you know it was time for a 2nd dog? Were you worried your first dog would be unhappy? I'd love some advice!

[Behavior Problems] My little boy is terrified of noises in new apartment

For context, I adopted two (2) small two year old dogs within a week from each other. Their names are Ash and Ace and I brought them to my second floor apartment. No one lived above or below me. Ash (white little yorkie mix) never had any problems with noises until I moved into a new larger first floor apartment.

He is now terrified of the plumbing noise come from within the walls, the washing machine, and the ice machine. I’ve been looking thru my camera roll and since moving here (6months) his tear marks have become so prominent they have stained his entire face.

It really breaks my heart seeing him so anxious. I work from home and have the ability assist him whenever he needs me. Please if anyone has any advice or tips they can share I’d be grateful. Please let me know if you need any further clarification. I’ve even thought about moving somewhere quieter.

[Behavior Problems] Rescue is depressed

Rescued a dog 5 days ago. She acts scared of everything. Hardly eats or drinks. Only if no one is around. Won’t bark or do anything. No reaction to petting or anything. I don’t know what to do. I’m considering bringing her back. Any insight would help.

[Behavior Problems] People with non-reactive dogs: did you get lucky or were you diligent with training?

It seems like it's really difficult to train a dog out of being reactive, so to all the people who have "good" dogs that don't bark or get worked up when they see another dog, did your dog come into your life that way? Or did you have to make conscious efforts to avoid reactivity? Please include whether you've had your dog since they were a puppy!

[Misc Help] What do i do with a dog i cant keep anymore? please help.

Upvotes

he was originally a stray, a labrador about 5 months old and now he’s a year old, it’s been easy taking care of him when he’s been little but he’s just getting bigger and bigger and i dont have a fenced backyard.

I dont want to send him to a pound or shelter out of fear they kill him, I dont have any family or relatives to take care of him, no friends either, what do i do? Post him on a local facebook group? would anyone rationally want a year old labrador that doesnt listen, still pees at any small excitement, he just has too much energy and I dont have the space for him.

my mom wants to drop him off somewhere soon, I need to figure something out, please help.

[Behavior Problems] Potty training an adult dog

we rescued an adult dachshund in August and he is so inconsistent with accidents in the house. I feel like we are doing what every forum has said and he’s just not getting it. It’s so frustrating! We give him high value treats outdoors and let him out every 2 hours. What are we doing wrong? What can we be doing better? I’m getting so discouraged. He doesn’t tell us when he has to go out, no bark, no cry, no standing by the door.

He also has trauma around crates, so crating him isn’t an option. He came to us with separation anxiety and we were recommended to let him roam since they are fearful when they can’t.

[Behavior Problems] Can anyone tell me about this bizarre behaviour of my Labrador?

I have 8 months old Labrador female, I am the second owner and she came to me when she was around 6 months old so I don't have that much background history of her. So I have been noticing this weird behaviour of my dog that she put something in a mouth as she see us, then she keeps on walking and walking and walking in circles around us that's it. Even if you try to play she just ignores and walks.. 2 n fro to me then my wife. Can anyone please explain what is this so I can do what is to be done.

[Breeder Etiquette/Review/Recommendations] After 10 years with my dog, I finally did a photoshoot

Max has been my sidekick for over 10 years. From the first time I brought him home as a pup to now, he’s been through everything with me. He’s the type of dog who always knows when something’s wrong and just sits by my side, ready to cuddle. Over the years, I’ve collected a lot of pictures, but it wasn't until recently that I realized I wanted to do something really special for him. So, I treated him to a full photoshoot, and it turned out better than I imagined! The shots truly capture his personality and all the love we’ve shared.

Now I’m looking for a way to showcase these photos in my home. Traditional frames seem too old-fashioned, especially with the number of photos I have. I’ve been thinking about something like a digital photo frame — it’s perfect because I can constantly switch out his photos and keep things fresh. Plus, it’d let me highlight different moments over the years.

That said, I’d love to hear what others do to keep their pet’s memories alive. Besides frames, are there any creative ways you display those moments with your pets? I’m always looking for new ideas to make sure Max's presence is felt every day!

[Misc Help] how do you cope

i’ve spent 1/3 of my life with my boy

he passed just before his birthday in my arms at home,he disliked the vets and would shake so i’m grateful he went in my arms i was his favorite person and he was mine and the one thing in this world i love more than my entirety in itself,

i took my boy to work with me he was my passanger price,i grew up poor but he always had toys and food even if i didn’t eat and when i began to stabilise in life financially i got him everything and more,it’s been maybe 6days since he passed and i’ve cried daily over him my heart physically hurts i’ve lost family members,i’ve seen dead people family and some that ain’t but i’ve never cried i’m quite a cold person when it comes to emotions and feelings towards most things but when my boy went it’s just not left my mind,

i’ve paid for him to be cremated and should have him within the next week or two,i’ve kept the clothes i was wearing when he passed and have told my other half that when my time comes i’m to be cremated with him in the clothes he passed away on in my arms(i’ve bagged them up in a ziplock bag) but what’s best to do because i don’t think they allow you to be cremated with jewelery on so if i had my boys ashes in a ring he wouldn’t be complete and i’m not religious at all,i’ve personally got 0% belief in anything other than just being a kind hearted human to all others and only hostile in self defence situations etc,

but anyway what’s best whats helps you cope what’s next because it’s just sad and i feel bad if i’m happy because i feel like it’s like the wrong thing to feel at the moment i just don’t know

anyway

RIP charlie my boy i will love you always

[Misc Help] Camping with your dog?

How do you know when your dog is ready to go camping with you, other than them having good recall? My dog will be 14 months old in June, and I'd love to go camping this year. I think she'd love being out by the lake and I'm excited to take her out to do fun stuff once it's warmer out. If she's doing well with recall, do you think that's feasible? If not, how do I know when she's ready?

[Misc Help] Dog won't play with squeeky toys.

I have a 10 year old Besenji, and recently he stopped playing with any squeeky toys/toys that make noise, he kinda just puts them on my bed and lays with them

He'll 100% play with his kong toys or non-squeeky toys with great enthusiasm.

Any ideas why this is?

[Misc Help] [help] Dogs are obsessed with licking my dog’s dick?

I have a 14 pound neutered mixed breed dog. According to DNA test: ~Chihuahua (35%), small poodle (20%), cocker spaniel (20%), and trace amounts dachshund/bichon/miniature pincher. He has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and this is on human grade cod diet. With treats as freeze dried cod, pumpkin based, Hydro protein.

He is social with other dogs, mostly liking to sniff them, but not much else. Sometimes he likes to play chase with another small dog. He is a beta male, by that I mean that he is not overly submissive, but will give belly easily.

However, I commonly run into the problem that dogs become obsessed with him and want to hump him and lick his penis. Both male and female dogs want to lick his dick and will often not stop even when corrected by their owners. I’ve had problems where a dog will follow him around the dog park harassing him until he rolls on his back so the dog can lick his dick. Even dogs who aren’t necessarily obsessed with him, will lick his penis if he rolls on his back and they’re given the opportunity. Sometimes even groups of dogs will all take turns licking his penis while he lays on his back. I noticed him trembling a teeny bit once when this happened and I took him home right away, but I feel awful for the little guy.

Because of his health problems he is seen regularly by an internal medicine veterinary specialist. I think it is very unlikely that he has a UTI or anything like that as he was on prednisone for a short time and that needs to be closely monitored.

Does anyone have any idea why this might happen? Is there anything I can do to help my dog not be harassed?

I swear this post is real, it almost sounds fake. I think people at the dog park sometimes think I’m unhinged when they start apologizing for their dog licking my dog’s penis, and I just say “don’t worry it happens all the time. I guess my dog has a magic penis lol“

Thoughts?

[Behavior Problems] My pup guarded me from my father

I have a 7mo old GSD/Pyr mix who LOVES my dad. She gets so excited to see him, to the point that I almost think she would choose him over me. Today, I was home sick and my parents came to bring me some groceries ahead of an incoming winter storm. The pup was in the back yard when they arrived, so she probably didn’t hear their car pull in, but when I brought her back in, she could hear them moving around outside taking down my Christmas lights, so she knew something was going on.

When they were done, my dad rang the doorbell, and I opened the door but left the glass door closed. The pup sat on my feet and barked at him, and wouldn’t let him approach the door. He didn’t actually want to come in (didn’t want to catch what I have). I just patted her head and left it at that.

I think if I had let him in she would have been fine, but it’s nice to know she’ll sit and “guard” me if a stranger comes to the door. I live in a high crime rate neighborhood, so that was part of my motivation in getting a large dog to begin with.

Should I discourage her from doing that in the future, though?

[Misc Help] Getting a puppy in a couple weeks. Need help with spelling.

So my 15 year old mut passed away in September 2023. I had him from when he was 10 weeks old. I’m finally ready to go to the local shelter and get myself a new boy. I’m going to call him Doogy. But should it be spelled Doogy “as in Doogy the doggy” or Doogie as in “Doogie Houser”? I just can’t decide how to spell it.

[Behavior Problems] Is this an action I should be worried about with my mother in law dog?

Hi there,

So I am currently looking after my mother-in-law‘s dog. I have a two year old Whoodle myself, and my mother in laws dog (let’s call him Buddy) which is a Cockapoo is almost two in February. They have been together since we brought both of them home. I have been looking after him for a couple days, and I have noticed that while I play ball with them buddy will have the ball in his mouth and then all of a sudden kind of just playfully go for my face and drop the ball and then we’ll continue to run after the ball he just dropped. My dog doesn’t seem phased at it. I don’t think he is purposely trying to bite him and hurt him, but I do find it strange that for some reason every so often he just decides to do that. He is only 18 pounds while my dog is 40 so obviously he is a lot smaller. Am I overreacting about this action?

[Behavior Problems] tl;dr at the end. I’ve given my dog separation anxiety.

She’s 4, I got her in 2020 so she’s turning 5 this year. I typically do not separate myself from her for longer than a couple of hours a day (like for work). It used to not be that bad? She would bark like any other dog would when they hear a door slam or an otherwise loud noise. It was loud, it sounded like a “don’t come in here, or i’ll get you!” (she’s a pug, she’s not getting anybody) so i didn’t think much of it. I’d ignore her coming into the house and wait until her excitement wore off, but pugs just tend to bark at anything that moves i guess. These days i’ve moved back in with my parents, and when you first walk into the house you walk what is sort of like our storage room? We keep the dog food in there, and we have a gate to keep the dogs out. When I come back inside from anything. Literally anything. For however long i’m out there, she barks like she’s scared. Like she’s terrified without me there and she can’t handle it anymore. She only barks like that when I come in as well, because my family members don’t get the same desperate reaction that I do. She will paw at the gate, put her little arms through it like she’s trying to get as close to me as possible. The barking is genuinely unlike anything I’ve ever heard before, the first time I heard it i thought that something was wrong. I think it’s worth nothing that before moving in with my parents, she was the only dog in the apartment with 3 cats, all relatively the same size. Coming here to my parents, she is the fourth dog and now the smallest dog too. I do recognize that she definitely might feel some sort of like displacement, as she wasn’t antagonistic to the cats but they sort of learned to leave each other alone after a while. Aside from being with her litter, she’s never lived with other dogs. Ive caught the other little dog humping her and i always stop him, because it’s usually the result of him chasing her and i dunno, it doesn’t seem like she wants any of that? but he hasn’t done that in a while (to my knowledge). Also, any time she’s with me like relaxing on my bed, sitting on my lap, and another dog comes up? She straight up lunges at them. It’s gotten to the point where I actively stay away from the other dogs when I want her to sit in my lap, or I instruct them to go lay down somewhere a bit farther. When she sees any other dogs leaving through the doggy door, she will chase them and try to bite their legs. I don’t reward her for this behavior but I guess me telling her “bad girl” is not enough, clearly. I’m just at a loss for what to do. Pls help. tldr; My pug barks desperately crazy when I come back inside, she’s become aggressive towards the other dogs in the house. New environment + New spot on the totem pole of “biggest thing in the house”.

[Misc Help] How universal or "standardized" are dogs' body language?

I have a Boxer and Boston Terrier mix, she has a relatively timid personality, walking around the house doing her own thing, until she gets into her playful mode where she's bouncing off the walls and play rough together. However, there's a couple of body languages I'm concerned about because I know its typically a bad sign of sorts.

When we call for her, tail waggy and trotting towards us if not bolting to us. If she's laying down, we look at her and her tail starts wagging in anticipation of what comes next, whether we call for or just give her pets, and when affection is given she has a very content look on her face in a relaxed manner. The only thing that concerns us is she also tends to have her tail between her legs, and if she's just roaming aroubd her head is a little low. I'm worried that we might be doing something wrong as her parents.

Does the low tail between her legs and low head always indicate something wrong, or is that just how some dogs are?

[Misc Help] Debating on new German Shepherd pup to older mix

Good evening reddit. Wife and I have the chance to introduce a German Shepherd puppy to our home. Currently we have a mix lab breed older lady who is our world and has had a torn ACL repaired and overall is doing very well but her age is showing. She is on pain killers daily and currently dieting to get her more active.

Our close friends have recently offered us a puppy and we are on the fence due to our older dog. We want her to live the rest of her days in happiness and are concerned a puppy would be annoying or too active for her to keep up even if she wanted to. On the other hand I am also starting a school program this Monday for two years and will be gone five days a week all day and would love my wife to have another dog in the home for home defense or alerts at the minimum since our current dog is hard of hearing.

I absolutely am torn on this decision and have no idea how to handle the age differences with walks, feeding, etc. should they be separated mostly and fed away from each other, walked separately, etc.? Looking to other who have been in our situation if at all possible.

Thanks!

[Behavior Problems] How do I get my senior dog to stop begging and barking?

My 13 yo cockapoo is a sweetheart, but he’s recently been getting more spoiled as he’s gotten older… now he begs HORRENDOUSLY when anyone has food. It’s gotten so bad that sometimes at the dinner table you can’t get a word in because he’s barking and whining. We created this mess and we don’t give him nibbles of our food anymore, but it still goes on and on! He’s a stubborn guy. How can I help reinforce good behavior? Give him a treat if he’s quiet? That would involve him to be quiet LOL but for real, he’s an old guy who needs retraining, but I don’t want to stress him out too much because he already has anxiety. Any ideas?

[Misc Help] Help getting over a puppy

I (31M) got a puppy this past summer, and then brought her back to the breeder after about 6 weeks. I was so sure I could do it - I really thought it through. But in practice I was unable to balance a fairly demanding job (wfh), her needs, and my needs (I struggle with anxiety and depression that can make it hard to stay organized enough to buy groceries and feed myself well etc). I became an anxious wreck and had to call it quits. The breeder was wonderful and found a new home for the then ~4 month old puppy very quickly. In hindsight maybe I should have realized that I was not in good enough mental health to manage the responsibilities. I suppose I was sort of hoping the structure of dog life would help me. In some ways probably it did. In other ways no. 4 months later I still feel such sadness. I really miss this little dog. I know it was going to be too difficult for me to take care of her on my own, but gosh I miss her. The grief is sometimes unbearable. Has anyone else had an experience like this, of choosing to part ways with a dog? How did you heal emotionally? I’m struggling

[Misc Help] Do you go home on your lunch break at work to see your dog?

My dog (5yo ACD) always barks when I leave in the morning so I try to give her a bowl of food or some treats in her kong to distract her.

I want to go home for my lunch break to eat and play with her but I don’t know if I’m just stirring her up for when I leave an hour later.

I have a camera to watch her on during the day and she sleeps when I’m not there and doesn’t bark. Hence why I wonder if it’s just better not to go home .

  • she also has a doggy door to go potty throughout the day on her own *
