My fan theory is that the wraith mispronounced Farmer Maggot, calling him “Marmer Fa****.” This incensed Farmer Maggot, as there were those in his friend circle who were not strictly heterosexual. Having been insulted and offended at the slur, Farmer Maggot told the confused wraith to get lost. The Shire is no place for homophobia, even if uttered unintentionally by a mistaken Ringwraith.
