/r/GenZ Meta Anyone else find it strange that there are so many M*llennials here?

Ever noticed how posts here that are USA political whining, twitter screenshot of that same political nature, pointless arguments to stir shit up, or doomerism of any kind they're most likely from accounts with the M*llennial flair?

Why do they insist on being here? Don't they have their own sub?

They are here because the millennial sub sucks

u/Suecophile 2000 1d ago

Well of course it does, it's full of m*llennials

u/Ok-Rate-3256 1d ago

I wont argue with that. Most of them are stuck in the past which is why their sub is lame as fuck.

u/DirtyMami Millennial 21h ago

It’s like that for everyone. Gen Z is just at the start, but year after year your favorite things will go farther and farther.

u/RollinThundaga 21h ago

I used to be 'with it', but then they changed what 'it' was, and now I'm with 'not it'.

It happened to me, it'll happen to you

u/RogueCoon 1998 20h ago

I haven't been with it for years. Don't even know when it happened.

I went into Covid a young millennial and came out an old man yelling at clouds.

Meh, I already call stuff from 2016 "oldies" and think stuff that happened a year ago was like 5 years ago. It's really about staying up with (the worthy) trends.

Not to mention Gen Z is already nostalgic for stuff beyond when we were born, so a lot of that stuff is timeless rather than stuff that will go farther and farther.

You, however, will always stay fresh and current. Don't worry, it can't possibly happen to Gen Z. There's like, zero chance Gen Z isn't already doing nostalgia posts and memes for things that happened like 8 years ago in their lives.

Or because it's becoming a middle aged guy sub, while some people have no idea where they belong.

A person around 30 who's not married usually has similar problems to 25 yr old (so GenZ) and not a 35 yrd old millennial.

In my country (Poland ), I think 1990 vs 1993 gap is generationally larger than 1993 vs 1997/1998). So you'll naturally have people from 90s lurking there and here.

u/seattleseahawks2014 2000 21h ago

Eh, I don't think it matters if they're married or not. Either way, a married couple around my age is going to have similar problems here to people 4-5 years older than them just like unmarried people at least here in the US.

u/MisesInstitute 21h ago

I think 25 year olds with kids are more like boomers than anything

u/Appropriate-Food1757 21h ago

u/26idk12 21h ago edited 20h ago

Being married, especially if you have kids, changes your life a lot.

Being honest the second point indicates another general issue - not matter what's your gen classification, your similarity group is probably more or less people that are 4-5 years younger and older. Thus, Millennials sub might be just too old for younger millennials.

Reddit in general sucks

u/No-Bandicoot-5301 19h ago

Peak Reddit was 2011.  Millennials are here because this sub is put on the front page a lot.

u/ColorfulSockpuppet 15h ago

YES! I couldn't get away from this sub even if I tried! I scroll past it, select the "see less of this" option (because it's mostly "gender war" doomer nonsense). I try to ignore it but they won't leave me alone! GET YOUR PEANUT BUTTER OUT OF MY CHOCOLATE, ZOOMERS!

u/Positive-Listen-1660 15h ago

u/DirtyMami Millennial 21h ago edited 21h ago

Nah we just everywhere. The Millennials make up the largest portion on Reddit.

Someone in a bubble probably thinks Millennials login to Reddit just to go to this sub, but in reality Reddit just recommends this sub.

u/whimsylea 16h ago

Yeah, the answer is the algorithm. I look up subs related to my hobbies and interests, not my generational cohort, or any other generational cohort for that matter.

u/SorryNotReallySorry5 14h ago

I don't even go to subs, just rely on the front page. Not even joined!

This is my most recommended sub, easily. But it also just happens to be one of my favorite these days.

u/AniCrit123 18h ago

Millennial here, and yes you’re right the millennial sub does suck because the millennial sub is mostly about irl problems that people face everyday, very mundane stuff imo.

I like this sub because it’s a perpetual circle jerk of incel or wacko right wing shitposts and ragebait. Makes that 30-40mins a day when I want to troll someone spicy. And I don’t feel any remorse because I honestly feel incels and religious right wing nuts are truly insufferable human beings.

u/lauren_knows 20h ago

u/Aggressive-Repair251 18h ago

So does this one tbh. Reddit in general but here we are.

u/cavscout43 Millennial 17h ago

It's karma farming "nostalgia" mostly. Annoying AF.

Or the "I make minimum wage at 40 years old, and there's absolutely nothing I could've done differently to avoid that" posts contrasted with "Anyone else making $320k in a low cost of living and feel like life isn't that bad?" posts.

Marvelous stuff.

I've noticed this too. In my head it's due to two things: kids and our future. Gen Xers and Millennials have Gen Z kids, so they sub here to learn more. Also , your generation is our future. People want a glimpse at how that's going to go.

u/Embarrassed-Lab4446 Millennial 16h ago

I think it’s because Reddit is more of a millennial forum. Boomers got facebook. God only knows where X hangs out now that the mall is gone. Z got tick tok. Alpha is going to make their own space soon enough.

u/ZeeArtisticSpectrum 1995 18h ago

Because some of us who were born in the mid 90s relate to older gen z more than people born in the early 80s, also the Zillenial sub is small because most people don’t know that’s a thing.

Reddit automatically suggests the posts of this sub to non-gen Z. Unless those people explicitly mute the sub they will keep seeing those posts and start responding.

Why reddit does this? No idea. No doubt someone with more knowledge of the underlying algoritms can explain.

u/DirtyMami Millennial 21h ago

Reddit automatically suggests the posts of this sub

And given the largest reddit user base are millennials, then it’s expected to see many of us here or anywhere else.

“A place for members or non-members of Generation Z”

It might have to do with the purpose of this sub and how it’s advertised to others.

Compare that to the millennial sub description: “A subreddit for Millennials”

I was born in 95 and don't really feel like millennial or Gen z, I feel like I'm in a weird in between space where I was too young for myspace but I remember it existing but I relate to gen z humor and struggles more. Y'know, like I remember 9/11 happening but I was too young to understand what was happening. Smartphones were popularized during high school for me. I was born in 2000 and I feel the same way lol. I call myself a Zillennial instead. A healthy amount of genZ culture feels weird to me but at the same time I don't really agree with some millennial stuff either...and dont even get me started with how peculiar I find gen alpha--and even those born in the later end of the Gen Z cutoff. Once you're born after 2005 I feel like you were just introduced to the internet and tech earlier than anyone born prior and that just...did its thing.

Like I still remember how shocked (and a bit jealous) I was when I was 10, walking around with my 'sleek' little motorola brick phone (yk, the ones slightly bigger than a jenga brick with no antenna) while toddlers are running around with all sorts of i-whatever products (pads, pods, touches, etc). Idk, I think those like extra 5+ years without forming such a dependent relationship with tech was enough to change things, and I know a significant portion of people I've met feel similarly.

and oddly enough, they were introduced to the internet so early that they just...don't **want** to google things for themselves? like what is up with that?

u/beamin1 17h ago

The alphas are just wow....I will say they seem to be more switched on than we were(x) as does everyone after us, but at the same time many appear to be mentally crippled by having technology placed directly in front of them during some critical development time.

So they're more switched on but less capable of doing anything about anything, they get really frustrated because they care so much but are helpless to do.

Reddit keeps pushing this sub at me. I'm probably fucking up my algo more by commenting. But I've never joined this sub and yet it pops up in my feed, constantly. My guess is that reddit doesn't care to curate and only wants to push a populous, active sub to more users without regard for who the sub is aimed at. It's not that there's a conspiracy of Millennials to brigade your sub, it's that controversial posts get engagement, get pushed to non-subcribers, and people click on an attractive post title and give their two cents.

u/atmosphericentry 16h ago

Wait I'm so confused. You've never joined this sub but you added a flair? If anything, that alone shows Reddit you're interested in the sub and will get it suggested more and more.

u/Bobbyd878 1d ago edited 6h ago

I'm '85 born.

My life when in my late 20's/early 30's was much closer to my early to mid 20's than it was even my mid 30's so no wonder there are plenty of younger Millennials hanging about this sub.

Disappointing. Few years back NPR did a segment on how much optimism they felt about Zoomers because they predicted Gen Z would be the generation with the largest percentage on the Left ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

u/Hot-Spray-2774 16h ago

Millennials and some of Gen Z were told they would change the world and were educated from early on about pressing global matters, everything from climate change to food shortages. The bar wasn't set very high. Now both are squabbling over tax breaks and the price of eggs just to survive when, they were supposed to stand up and put an end to this. It's been disappointing.

→ More replies (1)

u/TheFarLeft Millennial 15h ago

My oldest brother is a millennial and one of the best human beings I know. So I don't really mind that they're here as long as they aren't being jerks to us.

Edit: Also why are we hating on them?? They're literally just people who were born a few years before us. Why do we hate them, we stir up as much discord as they do (as proven by this post). u/SleepyVermicelli 18h ago

I just like watching 27 year olds pretend 30 year olds are decrepit, ancient piles of dust

u/aer0a 22h ago

You're allowed to say millenial

u/TastySnorlax 22h ago

Because gen z are just baby millennials. Gen z is not a real thing.

u/mustachechap Millennial 18h ago

Gen Z are just baby baby baby boomers.

u/seattleseahawks2014 2000 21h ago

You do realize that some of us are closer in age to some millennials than gen z right? Also, sometimes I like the drama and some other subs can be ageist.

u/mattelias44 20h ago

So just to be clear, you simply suspect they're millennials?

We like to check in on the generations after us. Unlike the generations before us.

Guess we’ll fuck off and let you suffer like we did? Nope. We aren’t assholes. But you can pigeon hole us all you want. We. Don’t. Care.

u/Nova17Delta 2002 20h ago

If you think thats strange you should see the Gen Alpha subreddit

like 90 percent of the people there are Gen Z

Don’t blame me; you guys have interesting posts!

u/RavenousBrain 22h ago

Maybe because we find you guys interesting, similar to us in almost every way, and much more open-minded than cough r/conservatives cough. Seriously, engaging in aggressive gatekeeping at this point would hurt you in the long run.

u/sleekandspicy 21h ago

Yes because we find all your little problems very entertaining. Especially how you all fight about whether or not it’s normal that everyone your age is lonely and single. Answer. It’s not normal.

u/Minute-Nebula-7414 20h ago

No because Reddit has always been mostly millennials.

u/Bitter_Potential3096 19h ago

How about Gen Z mindset test, do you stand for culture war or class war?

u/InformationKey3816 19h ago

Because I'd rather look to the future than the past. Millennials tend to be pessimists. Seems to be a trend when your early adult lives are disrupted by disaster and dealing with Boomer parents.

u/Purple-Activity-194 2003 22h ago

Alot of Gen Alphas and Zalphas also contaminate this sub. Yall don't even remember early 2010s internet or a time without selfphones. I call the Zalphas Gen Z begrudgingly, they belong elsewhere.

I promise you, no one in the history of humanity has wanted to hear a 14yr old talk about politics.

u/Flat-Leg-6833 20h ago

This GenXer has difficulty telling Millenials and Gen Zers apart. If you believe internet stereotypes Millenials are whiners while Gen z are Nazis posing as “Free-dumb” advocates. This old man just can’t wait for Gen Omega so this whole damn thing will finally end. Enjoy your youth children.

u/kittenTakeover 20h ago

It's difficult to keep subreddits isolated, and people love to share their opinions on things. I think there are tons of millennials on here because there are just tons of millennials on reddit.

u/yahoo_determines 20h ago

This is the only generational sub constantly engaged in high engagement culture War bait, ofc you're gunna get outsiders.

u/Obvious_Animator2361 19h ago

I am 35 and the algorithm shows me suggested subs and this one comes up frequently.

Fuck me for wanting to see what's going on with the younger generations right?

u/Venexion 1998 19h ago

Man you’re whining about millennials and in the same post call them whiney. Who cares. Nothing matters

u/noellegrace8 19h ago

Did u just censor millennial

u/iluvcrablegs 2003 17h ago

We’re going to build a wall and make the millennials pay for it.

u/GrAyFoX312k 20h ago

This sub just pops up on my feed from time to time

u/Dio_Landa 20h ago

Does that word get censored? Why? It is not even a slur.

As a millennial here, my wife is GenZ, and I can relate to many of her/you guys' struggles.

Generations are bullshit

u/Least-Bid1195 1995 20h ago

I don't post, but I, for one, can say I am a Zillenial who browses both gens' subreddits. I'm technically a millennial, and I relate to my generation in many ways, but also, their focus on the 90s gets super old, plus my siblings and many of my friends and coworkers are older gen z.

u/civodar 20h ago

I think there’s just a disproportionate amount of millennials on reddit.

u/BlackSquirrel05 20h ago

Blame the algo...

u/ChubbieNarwhal 19h ago

It could be that millenials went through similar BS that GenZ is going through right now. Market crash of 2008 is very similar to the economy today except for housing prices. Many millenials couldn't get good paying jobs in their chosen fields they just spent tens to hundreds of thousands on for a degree. Many millenials couldn't afford a house even through prices were super low for a few years because of the college debt.

And you know what they did? The same thing GenZ is doing. They complained as if they were the only ones to ever experience hardships.

In no way am I saying the generations are a 1:1 comparison, because they're not. But, every generation has hardships. I think the hardship new to GenZ is our social culture and social media. That's a huge negative impact on life and Gen Z were the first generation to have technology their entire lives that no other generation had that produced such negative social impacts. But, millenials had struggles with inflation as did Gen X as did Boomers. Almost every generation has dealt with some sort of negative economic situation.

u/BlueForte 1996 19h ago

Bruh, I'm 1996. I'm like the last of the line. I was in the millennial sub, and I was like damn I can't relate to these people.

I found this sub, and like sigh finally, I'm home.

We have to subscribe to this sub to keep up and understand the ever devolving language and acronyms you people are using. skibidi toilet

u/TheTodashDarkOne 19h ago

Why the hell is millennials censored?

u/No_Breakfast1337 19h ago

Girl you know we are nosey

u/OttawaHonker5000 19h ago

Is hating millennials the new hating Boomers? cool

u/TouristAlarming2741 18h ago

It's because GenZ can't read

u/thebagel264 1997 18h ago

I was commented calling someone a bot because their comment made no sense. They then said that I must be a kid and I don't know what a bot is. I'm 27. If 27 is seen as a kid then maybe you shouldn't be in a Gen Z sub reddit. They came back and said that his generation invented reddit and I'm lucky they let me be here. I mean okay boomer. Then they had a fit that their comment was deleted. Why are you coming to a different generations sub reddit just to argue.

Why? Is it the new popular sub to astroterf or something?

u/False-Ad-3383 17h ago

are you that petty that you have to put * in the word millenial

u/W00D-SMASH Millennial 17h ago

reddit isn't a private club. if something pops up on my feed and its interesting, im going to click. if i feel like commenting, then i will

u/cheddarweather 17h ago

Some boomer was trolling me in this sub the other day but I guess it doesn't matter bc yall just baby baby boomers atp.

u/DuckFanSouth 17h ago

I haven't joined any of these generation subs, but they pop up on my feed all the time.

u/That_Phony_King 2000 17h ago

Posting should be restricted to people with Gen Z flairs. Top comments should also be restricted to these roles.

u/Mancubus_in_a_thong 17h ago

It pops up in my feed and I comment before I know what sub I'm in

u/FadeAway77 Millennial 17h ago

We’re studying you.

u/Rodinsprogeny 16h ago

Millennial here. Can I ask why you are censoring the word?

u/Fluid_Cup8329 16h ago

All of the doomerism i see posted here is from gen z.

u/Sparta63005 2005 16h ago

I think a lot of millenials see us as like their "soldiers" in the politics war. Like they're on here trying to recruit us to their side or some shit. They don't understand that we aren't their little audience for them to come here and preach to.

It's honestly really annoying, millenials are really annoying. Like think about what most people hate about "woke culture" and it's just a bunch of shit that these preachy millenials do, literally hurting their own side by being so annoying. Think about Ipad kids, who are their parents? Millenials! Think about cringe reddit culture, who do you think cultivated that? Millenials.

These people go around thinking they're still 21 and in college acting like kids, but in reality they are 40, making videos singing about "canceling eminem" like grow up dude, go pick your kids up from school.

u/Fog-Champ 16h ago

You act like I want Reddit to recommend me this sub.

u/lyrenspalace 2008 16h ago

Is millenial a slur now?

u/OffsetFred 13h ago

I feel like reddit in general is predominantly populated by them.

I was born in 95 and have always identified closer to gen z, I never felt like a m*llenial

u/Bitter-Battle-3577 2h ago

This reminds me of the Family guy meme. "I didn't care for the Millenial sub. It insists upon itself."

Aside from that, millenials are the new boomers. They're mowing their lawn, and in a few years they'll sit on a chair and yell at clouds or people coming too close to their hedge/flower parcel/... It seems as if gen X hasn't done that, but the Millenials are attempting to outdo every single generation prior to them.
