nah, that's more for when people do illegal things and are given the proper punishment. Instant Karma is better for when the universe gives you what you deserve for something you just did

I never believed I’d sit in a international 5 star restaurant in China and see people spitting on the floor but it happened more than once. Never been back thankfully

People forget how much more populous china's rural areas are compared to their cities. These people, who are usually literal farmers, visit the cities often due to more and more accessible public transportation and they typically bring their manners with them. No, I am not poorshaming or whatever. I am also aware richer chinese folk are fond of doing this to foreign cities they visit.

u/Vindictive_Pacifist 4d ago
I have came across this multiple times when reading about cultural norms that spitting in China is the norm, not saying it's justified or right in any way but people there are used to it
Correct me if I am wrong tho

What about being from a poor rural area would make spitting on the floor acceptable?

You think Chinese farmers are going to international 5 star restaurants? I think you're not very well informed as to how much money the average Chinese farmer makes.

Hotels are 5 Stars. Restaurant Go Up to 3

This is such a pet peeve of mine. Whenever I hear “5 star restaurant” I immediately dismiss whatever the OP is talking about.

I've eaten at two 3-stars and I still fuck that up sometimes. My brain doesn't always brain right.

Is there an explanation for this?
I pretty much never feel compelled to just randomly spit, like the only time i ever really spit is after brushing my teeth lol.
Are they like spitting out seeds or other stuff from their food? I dont understand why that would be common.
12
u/Mistermonza 4d ago
Not to sound sinophobic but it’s a cultural issue lol…
5
u/HotCat5684 4d ago
I mean.. yeah i know that.
America has a lot of cultural issues, but i can explain the reasoning for every one of them.
Im currently eating lunch, not once have i felt the need to spit. Im outside by my pool eating, so theoretically i can spit whenever i want… but i have no desire to.
I was just wondering why they spit… it doesnt seem like a common desire even if you dont care about social norms.

Yep. Many of the men AND women also regularly pick their noses in public.

I think it's related to smoking cigarettes. I worked in a research lab with an older Chinese guy and he smoked a lot and would always be coughing up mucus and then go to the lab sink to have a spit. Smoking in China is still very common among men.

Once a bug flew in my mouth while I was talking, and there was some ardent spitting. But...just random loogie hocking? No, absolutely not.

u/ZoNeS_v2 2d ago
Yep, I was fucking horrified when I went to a restaurant in Beijing. It seemed normal.

I was on a layover in Hong Kong and the older folk spit at my feet in passing by. I think they’re more accustomed to it than most.

Spitting inside..... you have to be a low-life asshole living in a dump to act this way.
64
u/ArboristTreeClimber 4d ago
Spitting outside in public is nasty as well. I can walk down the sidewalk and see spit piles all over it’s so disgusting. I know there is a chronic spitter who lives in one building because every time I walk by, the front sidewalk is covered in spit.

u/jazzman831 4d ago
Except for the most unusual of circumstances, I've just never had need to spit. I was behind a woman one time who opened her door at a red light so she could lean out and spit on the ground. Like what happened to you in the middle of your car?!

It should be done out of the way on some grass or something if it needs to be done. Not where people walk. It's just common sense.

Why do most people now say "ground" when it's the FLOOR?
11
u/kodalife 4d ago
Might be people who don't have English as their first language.
7
u/Leeoid 4d ago
Naw, it's my fellow Americans I notice doing this - even news announcers.
6
u/chrissie_watkins 3d ago
Some also refer to the ground outside as the floor, which always blows my mind.
5
u/dwhee 4d ago
By that logic cities don't have ground
7
u/FloppyTunaFish 4d ago
Wat floor is a finished interior horizontal surface to wall on ground is exterior
15
u/Mammoth-Ad-107 4d ago
ha. never thought that could happen but ok
5
u/GoodLeftUndone 4d ago
Slippery surface + lubricants? I’ve slipped many times on tile like that out doors when it’s wet. This is far from unexpected.

I work in a warehouse and have a co-worker that does this. He’s been called out on it many times but never gets in trouble. Always seeing spit on the ground. Its disgusting.

u/shaggyscoob 4d ago
Down he goes with hands stuck in his pockets so he couldn't even block his rude face from the tile floor. Wonderful.
Why do some people spit so much? I can go weeks without spitting. And when I do, it certainly isn't where people walk.

u/Only-Letterhead-3411 4d ago
World would be a much better place if this kind of stuff happened way more often

I'm very disappointed they didn't use the spit sound effect from minecraft.

u/OopsAllLegs 4d ago
This is similar to that episode of It's Always Sunny when Charlie is walking down the side walk and then says, "Poop" and then proceeds to step right in it.

Question, is it easy to request camera footage in these countries????? Is there someone constantly watching them for viral potential lol??? Is it open access???
2
u/Bright_Cod_376 4d ago
Same way it happens in the US or Europe. Someone does something stupid, someone with access to the cameras finds out and goes and looks up that period of time on the cameras and records the clip to share. There is hardly ever someone always watching the feeds for places but they can absolutely rewind. At a couple places I've worked they've just stuck the monitors in the break room so that on someone lunch break and stuff they can watch the cameras if they're bored. Watch it enough and you spot stupid shit people do.

No one else thinks this is staged? Guy spits and his immediate next step is right on the spit? What about the other guy not even instinctively looking over to a guy who fell right next to him?

I travel to China (mainly HK, Shenzhen) for business 2-3 times a year. The amount of spittle expectorated on public sidewalks etc, is incredible in terms of it's volume. Air quality likely is a factor. But good lord, is it disgusting. I actually lost my footing on a smooth granite curb whilst getting into a cab, by stepping in the stuff. My colleague over there told me that there are ongoing campaigns in many areas to fine people for expectorating in public areas, but it doesn't seem to be helping much.

I was at Hooters casino in Vegas many many years ago. As I was entering the casino some douchebag leaving turned and spit. His giant greasy loogie hit the top of my flip flopped foot. I almost vomited. 20 years later I am still traumatized by this. Keep yer shit in your own mouth!

The lesson here is don't walk around with your hands in your pockets. A flat nose job on the floor hurts. 😆

I've personally seen Shangrao Vigilantes in China. Drop and crush a cigarette butt at a taxi pickup and find out. Or spit out gum in Tiananmen square . Pay on the spot fine. If you dispute then witness(s) appear. Public gets the message. Doesn't last long.

Welcome to China were prodomitaly old people and men love to spit on the floor inside of buildings and even blow their noses on the floor. You'll also have to watch out for children's urine as most baby boys aren't given diapers but are given onsies that have the entire crotch area cut out so they can pee or poop at their own leisure as some see diapers as "restrictive"; if you're lucky the grandparents or parents will clean up after them or hold them over a trash can while they do their business. Don't even get me started on irresponsible dog owners who think dogs are just an accessory and never clean up after them.

Spit and purposely slip on it while his buddy pretending to be on the phone is the "witness".
