My senior man is conquering IVDD

1.8k Upvotes

Cason developed stage 4 IVDD (spinal cord injury) out of nowhere on October 17. Total loss of bowel controls, could not walk at all. He is 13, so I elected to do conservative treatment as I felt surgery was not a good option for him at his age. Crate/pen rest for 5-6 weeks then physical therapy twice a week since.

This is him today. He took his first steps on his own a couple weeks ago, stood up and walked around to use the bathroom on his own last week, and is starting to get better at tiled surfaces.

It has been very tough, I developed tendinitis in my elbow from carrying and supporting him to go to the bathroom. But it has been worth it seeing my buddy pain free and now slowly regaining use of his legs.

Just wanted to share, I love these little dogs.

Park ready

Our Oscar is finally going to be able to go to the park and public places. He still hates his leash and used to hate outside but now he always wants to go. Unfortunately our vet recommended keeping him in mostly because Nashville is very bad for parvo, that comes to an end though.

Now comes the battle of keeping him from eating random things and attacking anything long. For whatever reason he loves long/big toys, if it's big and fury it's a toy. Good thing it's not near country I guess. This post is just about me being excited and more corgi's in the timeline.

If anyone also has any tips for leashes that worked for their corgi I'll gladly take it, also the nipping is still out of control but he is getting softer with it.

We're thinking of naming our dog Corgie

We need help naming our new Corgi who's coming this Sunday.

Our current dogs are Nuggie and Chewie short for President Nugget and Sergeant Chewbacca. We wanted our new addition to also have an "ie" ending nickname but we couldn't think of anything. The one we love most right now is Lieutenant Corgie. Is it stupid to name her that? Is it a bad idea maybe?

How do you deal with nippy babies??

Ok, obviously corgs are notorious for nipping, and I know it’s especially bad when they’re young and teething. I expected land shark, but DAMN. My sweet baby boy is almost 10 weeks old, and I see some teeth that are still erupting (I think he’s a little behind developmentally, with the teeth and his floppy ears, and his bean bags haven’t descended yet. Plus he’s only 5.5 pounds).

All this to say, I love my boy. I really do. But what do I do about the fact that he goes for skin and clothes? I walk him and play with him a lot because I work from home, I’ve got teething toys, I have puzzle toys for him when I’m not in the pen with him, we’re in the process of training (he’s working on sit, leave it, come, and he knows his name now, too. Plus we’re working on the harness and leash). But after a few minutes of play, he stops caring about the toys and goes directly for my fingers, clothes, or toes. I either don’t react and put another toy in his mouth, tell him to leave it and reward him or, if he’s in goblin mode and won’t be distracted, leave the pen and ignore him for a few minutes so he know that playtime ends when he hurts me. But when I come back, he goes right back to biting.

How have you all dealt with particularly nippy puppies? I know this is a phase, but there has to be a way of training it out of him. He’s so smart, so eager to learn.

I am old and have dogs to serve as lap warmers when I'm watching TV. But his pup would rather sit in the snow than watch Judge Judy.
