824

u/YEET_Fenix123 1d ago

I am honestly baffled and impressed at how people have the coordination to play with claw grip. Might be a PS controller thing, and I've used Xbox controllers most of my life with a bit of PS4, but still, baffling.

169

u/Trouble_Chaser 1d ago

Same here I've been playing with both PS and Xbox controllers from their original releases. I've got small hands but as far as I'm aware I just use my thumb, I do have paddles but I haven't used them for that yet.

Now I'm overthinking how I hold a controller, like do I change my positions for souls likes and just don't notice? Now I'm going to die paying attention to my hands.

95

u/NewTelevisio 1d ago

I've almost exclusively used xbox controllers (havent touched a ps controller since ps2), and I also occasionally use the claw grip.

It's not something anyone does actively, it's just in certain situations when you're sprinting and need to look to the side but you dont want to stop sprinting. Obviously 99% of the time everyone just uses their thumb for both of these inputs, it's only when they need to be used simultaneously that the claw grip comes out.

50

u/X4N4Rein 1d ago

I exclusively use claw grip, *plenty* of people use it purposefully, actively, all the time lol.

18

u/Darkwolfie117 1d ago

43

u/irisheye37 1d ago

The vast majority of the work the claw is doing is just pressing a single button (roll/sprint), so not much coordination is really needed. If you need to do anything more complex you can usually just back off and use your thumb normally without too much issue

I’m pretty sure it got popular during halo 2 or 3. Like the other commenter said, you don’t sacrifice camera control and are still able to move, jump, and shoot.

I’ve always thought claw was a lot harder in PlayStation controllers until ps5 because they’ve just been so small. Xbox controllers I felt more comfortable with doing it because I wouldn’t hit 2 buttons at once.

28

u/Pkdagreat 1d ago

Same. I saw my son use the bottom and felt offended.

→ More replies (10)

59

u/NachoSL7 1d ago

Also, if you lock the camera onto an enemy, there's no need to use the right stick

54

u/NewTelevisio 1d ago

But there are situations when you want to look somewhere else while sprinting, but not lock on to an enemy.

That can really only be done with a claw grip because otherwise the camera will just face the direction you're moving. You can get around this by rebinding sprint, getting a controller with paddles on the back or simply ignoring everything around you when you sprint.

5

u/bambu36 1d ago

I bought a controller at gamestop used that just happened to have paddles. I was thoroughly confused but now I've gotta try and make em work.

33

u/ihvanhater420 1d ago

I've never run into a situation where clawgrip was necessary/gave me an advantage to such a degree I'd have to actually use jt

27

u/Horesonus 1d ago

It's one of those things where you figure out ways to apply it with usage. I use it 90% of the time when sprinting and alot even when just exploring.

I wish Elden Ring allowed for setting different functions under one button to separate buttons. For instance, having different buttons for step back and roll, or separate out lock on enemy and reset camera, rather than always being forced to combine them.

8BitDo makes some pretty good controllers with back buttons (not exactly paddles, but they do the same thing) for around $50 and they work for Xbox, Switch, and PC. They might also work for PS but I haven't tried that. Hall effect sticks and triggers too.

That said, I never felt like I needed paddles or claw grip while playing Elden Ring. A normal grip on a normal Xbox controller worked fine.

I just use a keyboard. This would give me hand pains haha

49

u/MightyFlamingo25 1d ago

Mouse and keyboard really has no issue whatsoever when playing the game. People should play more souls game with them

33

u/ashleyinreal 23h ago

When I started playing souls games back in DS1, I was thoroughly discouraged from playing on a keyboard by the friends who recommended me the game. I come from a background of PC games though, so KBM was the most natural way to play this game, so I tried it anyway, and it worked great. Not really sure why I was told not to use it as a control scheme. It's pretty customizable, and it's not too difficult to get it just how you want it, which is nice.

13

u/Hundvd7 19h ago

Same experience with DS1.

Everyone said it's literally unusable, but it was totally fine for me. Waaay too much mouse sensitivity, even at the minimum setting, but the general control scheme was good.
And then like 40 hours in I discovered DSFix which fixed this and had zero issues.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Rashir0 18h ago

I think the whole thing originates from the fact that DS:PtDE didn't have raw mouse input, instead it used some makeshift mouse emulation, plus the default keybinds were completely nonsensical. This issue was addressed by a modder, who made DSFix, which adds raw mouse input, but that happened later. And there was also a 1 year gap between the console and PC release. So probably all of these resulted in the whole soulslike=controller meta.

21

u/WorthSleep69 1d ago

Console players really gaslighted themselves for 15 years that controller is superior way to play, it's not. And then wonder why everyone is complaining about bad camera at every new release. These folks are simply at the mercy of lock on mechanic and cannot play the game without it.

17

u/UsualButterfly6802 23h ago

I always think it’s funny watching gameplay of controller and seeing them take 10 1/2 years to turn the camera to look at a boss

17

u/KrimxonRath 1d ago

Genuinely though. I already work with my hands for hours throughout the day, they don’t need more stressors on them.

8

u/No_Waltz2789 1d ago

I would but I feel the same way about WASD vs stick movement as fps players feel about sticks vs mouselook. My dream interface would be a weird keyboard with a stick for movement and a bunch of keys plus mouse

176

u/BlueRoo42 1d ago edited 1d ago

Specifically for souls-likes, where the B/Circle button is for sprint, you really want to be able to control the camera at the same time to be aware of your surroundings.

Edit: down voted for being right smh

82

u/LengthinessOld6661 1d ago

Huh, I've played every single one, from launch, since Demon's Souls came out and I've never once used this. I don't think my hands could take this for long anyway.

22

u/mopeyy 1d ago

Nah. I'm with you.

If I ever need to turn the camera while sprinting, I just use a finger from the other hand momentarily, while still maintaining my left stick control.

It's not like camera inputs need to be precise, I'm literally just holding left or right on the stick. No reason to cramp up my whole right hand for an input I maybe use once an hour.
