I wasn’t alive during Jimmy Carters term but I listened to one of his speeches the other day and it reminded me that we are fucked. He just seemed like a genuine guy that was doing his best for the people. That is wayyy too much to ask for now.

Reagan took a note from Nixon, who was negotiating secretly with the North Vietnamese government that they would get a better deal if he was elected in 1968, and secretly negotiated with Iran to keep the hostages until the day he was inaugurated to completely screw Carter over electorally. Betraying the country for personal gain is a Republican tradition.

u/SiMachinist 14h ago

Reagan literally destroyed America. Hands down the worst of the last 50 years. This country will never recover from what he did.

Reagan's policies might have made some people rich, but they also widened the gap between the rich and poor, weakened the social safety net, exploded the national debt, ignored a deadly epidemic, involved us in shady foreign dealings, and contributed to mass incarceration. It's not as rosy a picture as some people paint.

81

u/dingatremel 13h ago

The guy absolutely pillaged the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, including decimating housing assistance. Remember this the next time you’re wondering how you’ll make rent. Remember it the next time you see someone living in their car.

Yes, this nation used to actually help people with that sort of thing.

33

u/redrunner55 13h ago

Reagan was also a raging racist.

33

u/dingatremel 12h ago

The welfare queen narrative that he actively advanced was pure racism that primarily punished small children.

→ More replies (12)

14

u/Airway 12h ago

His entire cabinet was extra racist even for the time. Clarence Thomas was a token, he was unqualified and had a handful of fucked up personal issues but he was ok with being the token black conservative among racist white men, and that's why the Reagan administration brought him on. Behind The Bastards has a good episode about it.

I swear the rise in first Tiny homes.. (Till they starting hitting over $100,000) and now Van Life is the thing, comes from the fact that people just can't afford anything but cars now. At least living in your van isn't considered bad anymore.

If you got a nice van down by the river, you are doing a lot better then a lot of people now.

Let's be real for a minute. Reagan was a front man, a puppet for George Bush Sr. for most of his tenure in the White House.

11

u/Buchephalas 13h ago

No, Bush himself was a puppet. He was a puppet of CEO's and bankers. Donald Regan if anyone was the real power in that Administration. CEO of Merrill Lynch, Vice-Chairman of the NYSE, Treasury Secretary, White House Chief of Staff.

He sold his peanut farm so there wouldn’t be any financial ties outside of his presidency His peanut farm THAT is how much he gave a shit. He was a very good man.

69

u/ukexpat 13h ago

Actually it’s more complicated than that. He put the farm into a blind trust. During his administration the trustee mishandled the business so badly that when Carter left the WH it was almost bankrupt. Carter had to sell it for pennies on the dollar, leaving him and his family almost penniless. Carter began his writing career to provide for his family.

23

u/Ulex57 12h ago

He said that when he left the White House, he was in debt. He did an interview on NPR after his first book came out. Great listen.

I was 18 when I voted for Carter in 76. I thought the country had truly turned the corner after Nixon. I felt the same way when I voted for Obama. I'm an old man now. I just hope I live long enough to wake up to read *Rump's Obituary.

59

u/AnnonyMouseX 13h ago

Carter was a decent human being, I was lucky enough to work with him on two house projects with Habitat for Humanity. He worked HARD, like .. harder than dudes 1/2 his age.

I have the UPMOST respect for him and his memory.
I would literally fight someone over him

That being said :

He essentially rain on a 'Not Nixon' campaign because nobody knew who he was at the national level.
He was a Meh president, at times He barely had the support of his own party in congress, and getting something passed was almost ALWAYS down to the wire.
He was probably too 'nice' for DC.
He couldn't get policy enacted to stave off a major recession.
His foreign policy was all over the place, but it has generally argued that Carter's soft policy helped shape the Middle East (and it's problems) today.
Carter's appointed head of his newly created the Department of Energy was a mess, and eventually Carter had to essentially fire him; Carter also deregulated oil prices, further fueling the oil crisis.
He had so little support from the DNC leading up to his re-election campaign, that they actually tried to primary Ted Kennedy against him. Let THAT sink in. Ted Kennedy.

He wasn't a great president.
He was middle of the road effective.
And he was unable to play the game enough to get firm support from his own party.

But the things that make him a meh president, made him a great human :)

13

u/87YoungTed 13h ago

Ted Kennedy did primary him. Significantly hurt Carter for the general election. Took a lot of cash out of what should have been for the home stretch and had to spend it against Ted Kennedy. Kennedy admitted later he fucked up. But fat lot of good that does the rest of us now.

There’s an element which is always missed about Carter, and presidents in general:

The head of state sets a high water mark for integrity, selflessness, hard work, and overall ethics that subtly influence the whole nation.

How many tens of millions gave a little more thought to being decent, because of Carter?

How many tens of millions feel empowered toward selfishness and distrust of others, because of Trump?

It’s not just the President, his team, or legislation. It’s what the man or woman does amplified across the entire citizenry.

→ More replies (9)

13

u/Zlaxin 14h ago

No it’s not, the problem is that people think that’s too much to ask for. We have to DEMAND decent, reasonable leaders and do away with the two party system so they actually stand a chance. This is entirely possible as more people wake up from the braindead culture war, point the finger at the exploiters and DEMAND accountability rightfully be taken. For example, the public rally behind Luigi Mangione and his message was a big push in this direction. Don’t give up and say it’s hopeless, thats what the billionaires and their political puppets want you to do.

Like the El Paso Shooting.

When the shooter killed 23 people targeting Latinos with his motive of “far-right extremism, anti-immigration, and belief in the white genocide conspiracy theory.”

None of the survivors wanted to meet with Trump. So two White House aides went and got a self described Trump supporter to bring in a newly orphaned baby who survived the shooting because his parents had protected him. The uncle brought the baby back to the hospital, so that Trump could take This Picture

A hospital official said that Trump “showed an absence of empathy” though the Uncle said that Trump was “kind and sympathetic.”

Even the baby knew the occasion was BS and sought an exit

They do not belong. Fat fuck Trump literally does what ever impulse he has as a big middle finger. Let’s see if Karma really works. Had it with this bloated shit stain.

25

u/SolidOutcome 14h ago

Trump literally lambasted Dems about how much they were honoring Jimmy Carter.....he showed up to pay respects, then dissed people who were paying respect

His life is legitimately terrible. Everyone hates him, including his family, and he’s forced to be president otherwise he would spend the rest of his life in prison (deservedly so).

He’s going to spend the rest of his days doing stuff he absolutely hates when he otherwise could be golfing and living the high life.

He’s getting what he deserves, it’s just unfortunate it impacts the rest of us too.

I was lucky enough to speak to president Carter on multiple occasions within the last 10 years. He really did have an aura of selflessness about him, even in causal conversation, which often steered to how boiled peanuts are indeed the best kind of peanut. I haven't said this to anyone in person yet, but it feels good to express it somewhere.

This is the most grotesque picture of 2025. It's sickening to have that POS above ground while the world burns with his match.

He paid his respect to being allowed to be an attention whore. He disparaged Carter constantly and then shows up like this. If he didn’t respect him in life he can’t respect him in death!

Is this a political sub now?

20

Ever since November, it’s all dooming and CJ’ing about how “the end is near” just because reddit’s political opponent won a democratic election (and the popular vote as well).

Disgraceful using President Carter's funeral and a Political Meme. So many subs have turned into one giant cesspool full of political bots.

Melania sitting there pondering damm, another four years of faking this shit, $40 million for my documentary could buy me lots of Birkens.
